The Albury campaign was started by survivor, Judy Langridge and continues to be coordinated each year by the Women’s Centre for Health and Wellbeing’. It is used as an organising strategy by individuals and agencies in the community to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls. 15.01.2022 Destroyers, after our recent post about the sexual harassment of women in public places and the need for bystander intervention, we found news of an online publ...ic service ad in Japan created to encourage exactly that by framing harassment as the crime that it is. The #ActiveBystander ad focuses on a young man witnessing 6 common forms of public sexual harassment that Japanese women experience, but not doing anything about it. He sees upskirting on an escalator; a man deliberately slamming into women on the footpath; a woman being groped by a passing cyclist; a persistent pickup attempt; a drug dropped into a woman’s drink in a bar; and a sleazy boss hugging a woman employee and asking her inappropriate questions while out with coworkers. The same 6 scenes are then revisited, but this time the young man intervenes even in a small way and makes a difference. The PSA ad’s theme is, Turning away creates a society in which it’s easy for sexual violence to happen, and at the end the young man asks the viewer, What would you do if you were me?. The ad’s creators Shiori Onuki, a midwife / sex educator and a writer called Artesia report that women have responded overwhelmingly positively, saying they experience harassment daily. Men, on the other hand, are surprised this harassment happens so often. YouTube viewer Ringo says, I think that even I, a victim, was creating a society that is permissive of sex crimes. This video gives hope that the number of victims will fall as society treats these acts as crimes that even though they may be difficult to see do exist. Sadly, the PSA ad doesn’t air on Japanese broadcast tv because it wasn’t made by the Advertising Council Japan. You can watch the PSA here: https://savvytokyo.com/japanese-anti-sexual-violence-ad-ac/ Destroyers, what do you think of the ad? Would a similar idea work here? What scenarios should be included?
