21.01.2022 Meet our CHILTERN (VIC) Branch Instructor: SENSEI DAVID EDWARDS (& his son Zach) took over the Rutherglen (VIC) branch at the end of 2002 from Sensei Brenton. S...ensei David met Kancho Johanes Wong and the Wongsdojo Karate club at Corowa RSL a year earlier through a karate seminar. Sensei David & Zach left the Wodonga Wado Ryu after 10 years of training and teaching. During that time, Sensei David & Zach drove to Sydney multiple times a year to train at Wongsdojo Hombu. Sensei David had to learn the Mei Bu Kan karate style and it's history and by doing so Sensei David was able to set up the Chiltern Valley Dojo in Victoria. Both father & son have travelled with Wongsdojo to Okinawa on numerous occasions. Every training experienced in the Okinawan dojo is always a memorable experience. Every student that have travelled with Wongsdojo karate to Okinawa have truly enjoyed the culture, the training sessions and of course the food. Sensei David is 4th Dan Black belt in karate & 4th Dan in Kobudo. With Kancho Johanes Wong’s permission, in 2019, Sensei David has asked for Sensei Tony Hennessy to take over the Chiltern branch. However, Sensei David would still continue teaching the Kobudo classes. For more details of the class times, please contact Sensei David on 03 5726 1306. 18.01.2022 CHI ISHI is a traditional Okinawa karate training tool used in order to develop hand, wrist, arm and shoulder strength. It consists of a wooden pole with a conc...rete weight at one end. The extension of the weight provides extra conditioning to hand and wrist strength. Used in Hojo undo (supplementary exercises) by some Karate styles, the Chi Ishi is used by gripping the wooden pole and swinging the concrete weight around or holding it stationary with the weighted end extended. Chi Ishi training is very similar to the kettlebell workouts & is used as part of training today in Wongsdojo karate. Contact us for more details of our karate & Kobudo training schedule. See more

13.01.2022 Meet our Wongsdojo student - JAMES James is currently 3rd Dan in karate, 5th in kobudo & an Orange belt in Naha-Te. I have been doing Karate since 2005. I st...arted off with karate & added kobudo in 2013. 15 years ago, I was introduced to karate by a friend of mine who had been going for about a year. The hardest thing to overcome in my karate training was in 2013, during that time I was always in pain due to my back problem. I pushed through with my training & with the guidance of Kancho Wong. Determined to beat this, I got better & stronger after a year of perseverance & reminding myself that I will do this no matter what each time I stepped into the dojo. My advise to anyone thinking of starting or new to karate is...to be a great karateka you must always practise (renshu renshu cai renshu). Be patient & don’t give up. There are days when you are not motivated, that’s the days to give 1000% (yes 1000 & that’s not negotiable). Karate & Kobudo are always about learning for me. Practising multiple times & stretching my limits with the ‘can do’ attitude. My best karate moment was my first trip overseas to train for a week in Okinawa, Japan. Every aspect of training was very rewarding. I have been back multiple times since then & have found that from every trip, it has allowed me to expand my martial arts knowledge deeper, connect to the roots of my styles & come back home with experience that money can’t buy. For more details regarding your next karate &/or kobudo class, please contact us.

13.01.2022 Get yourKarate Gi ready... Hombu dojo classes are back from 1st February for a year of progress, new skills & smart training. For other locations, please contact the respective branch Sensei’s .

The Tanren Bo is traditionally made of oak. A lump of wood with a handle, it can be used for partner strength training & conditioning. The overall benefits of Tanren (conditioning) are for whole body strength, focus, precision & improving internal strength. Kobudo training has s available at Wongsdojo Hombu. 04.01.2022 KONGOKEN is a Karate Strength Training Tool. A traditional Okinawa & Japanese martial arts tool used as a HOJO UNDO (supplementary exercises) to the regular k...arate training in order to develop upper body, lower body, core strength & for balance training. The KONGOKEN is a large heavy iron or steel ring that can weigh up to 45kg. The theory behind this training tool is that its awkward shape focuses a student to use many different muscles when moving this unwieldy and heavy object.

04.01.2022 Meet TOONGABBIE (NSW) Kids Karate instructor: SENSEI FEN INGERSOLE started training martial arts at the age of 11. With 38yrs experience in multiple martial art...s discipline, there’s 3 generations of martial artists running in the family with her dad (Kancho Johanes Wong) as the head instructor of Wongsdojo Hombu Australia & her kids practicing karate also from a young age. Sensei Fen has attained 5th Dan in Mei Bu Kan Go Ju Ryu Karate. 1st Dan in Karate Naha-Te, 1st Dan in Kobudo Koburyu, 1st Dan in Hap Ki Do & Provisional Black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Sensei Fen’s started training when she joined her dad to a Tae Kwon Do & Hap Ki Do class. Shortly after that her dad opened a Karate Naha-Te school and by this stage Sensei Fen was training 3hrs twice a week & early Sunday Hap Ki Do private lessons. In the early 1980’s, Fen’s dad went to Okinawa & studied under Kaicho Ikemiagi. Wongsdojo Hombu adopted the Mei Bu Kan Go Ju Ryu style & this became Sensei Fen’s 2nd style of karate learnt. From 2000, Sensei Fen expanded her fitness journey by attending various classes at the gym, took up boxing & attained her fitness certificate. Besides the kids karate class, she also teaches boxing fitness classes at the Hombu dojo. Sensei Fen says that her best karate moments was when she was awarded McDonald’s Junior Sports Star of the week back in 1987 & was featured on the front page of a local newspaper. The other great moments was participating with 3973 karatekas in Guinness World Record event in Okinawa Japan for ‘Most people performing a Kata’ in 2016. Sensei Fen graduated from a teaching degree but over the years life took her to many other career path until in Feb 2019 when she took over the Toongabbie branch kids karate class. Sensei Fen says it’s funny how life can bring you to a full circle, regardless of the diversion, the universe will take you to where you’re meant to be. They say that teaching kids takes a lot of patience. I believe it’s more than that as you really have to know them & the styles they learn things before you can successfully teach them. You have to be super creative when you are explaining something to them. Make it fun, make it real so that they remember without sacrificing the discipline part of what you want to convey. What works in an adult class, often don’t in a kids class, so the way you teach has to be in line with how that individual thinks & retains information. Once you identify this, you will win them every time & their progress is a lot faster & smoother. Kids karate class is currently on every Mondays & Tuesdays with an additional Thursdays classes from 2021. Wongsdojo Kids Karate class is an Active Kids approved provider. Please contact Sensei Fen for more details.

03.01.2022 Today we honor Sensei Meitoku Yagi, founder of GojuRyu Meibukan March 6, 1912 February 7, 2003

02.01.2022 Meet our BEVERLY HILLS(NSW) Branch Instructor: SENSEI ALEX GLA started learning karate (Go Ju Kai) in 1988 under Con Hardas while still in high school & progre...ssing over the years to provisional black. It was while working in IT support (his first Job) back in 1996 & chatting to a customer (Iwan - Wongsdojo student), Sensei Alex got to talking about martial arts & a traditional Okinawan style of Karate called Meibukan. Intrigued in what traditional karate meant Sensei Alex was introduced to Kancho Johanes Wong. He started training, loved it so much & he was hooked. Sensei Alex could not get enough of it, training karate as much as he could. He also took up swimming & Wing Chung Kung Fu under Jim Fung in Chinatown for 12 months. Sensei Alex is always driven to never limit himself to a single train of thought as he says that there is always another application for a technique. However, life quickly progressed too. Sensei Alex moved overseas & then later interstate for a few years. After a short pause, Sensei Alex resumed training again at Wongsdojo karate in 2004 when he got back. He worked hard & over the years progressed to a black belt. Sensei Alex became a branch instructor in 2013 taking over the torch from then Daceyville branch instructor Desmond & by 2015 he moved the class closer to home at Bevery Hills. Class is growing stronger with 12 kids & young adults. During that time, Sensei Alex also studies Kobudo Kobukai (Okinawan weaponry) at Wongsdojo Hombu. With a strong karate background, he has progressed to 5th Dan Black Belt with hopes of starting a Kobudo class in the near future. Passing on knowledge & training others is by far Sensei Alexs greatest driver. "You dont really know what you know until you have to teach kids". When it comes to teachers, Sensei Alex have a great role model & mentor in Kancho Johanes Wong. He says that Kancho Wong always has the time to explain martial arts to him & his students. There is always another way to solve a problem & when in doubt train it out. Sensei Alex is 2nd Dan Black Belt in Karate & 5th Dan Black Belt in Kobudo. He said that his greatest moments are the trips to Okinawa where the Wongs dojo group travel like a family & live like locals. Participating in Okinawan karate & Kobudo seminars, tournaments & of course training. Long hard training session with our Karate Kaicho Masaaki Ikemiyagi and Kobudo Kaicho Takashi Kinjo. Please contact Sensei Alex on 0405 622 401 for Beverly Hills Karate schedule. Facebook link - https://www.facebook.com/WongsDojoBeverlyHills/
