18.01.2022 WOODEND BOWLING CLUB CELEBRATES 130 YEARS On Christmas Day this year, the Woodend Bowling Club will celebrate 130 years since the very first green was opened 25 December 1890. The origins of the club dated back just over six months from then when, on June 1st, it was decided at a well-attended meeting to establish a Bowls, Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club in Woodend. A committee was appointed to select the most suitable site and was authorised by the meeting to make applica...tion to the Council. The location chosen was situated on the south side of the Five Mile Creek and was unanimously approved by the meeting that was consequently held. This is exactly the same picturesque location that the Woodend Bowling Club still enjoys today more than 130 years later, commented Woodend Bowling Club President Mike Dornau. It was also suggested that a 4 feet 6 inch picket fence be erected, at a cost of which would not exceed 50 pounds, with Councillor Christian donating 15 pounds to the cause. As soon as the fence was erected the Club would then spend at least 50 pounds in forming the new bowling green. The rest, as they say, is history. 130 YEARS OF MAJOR EVENTS Since the formation of the Woodend Bowling Club in 1890, the members of the Club have seen and been part of some amazing historic events added Mr Dornau. The Federation of the nation of Australia, two World Wars, the Spanish Flu epidemic, the Great Depression, two Olympic Games, five Commonwealth Games, 30 Prime Ministers and now the Covid-19 pandemic. There have also been lots of great and memorable times at our club in those 130 years as well. Thousands of members and visitors have enjoyed playing competition and tournaments. Hundreds of club member volunteers have maintained and kept the club in beautiful condition. Thousands of people have enjoyed our facilities for various types of functions. The introduction of the all-weather carpet green 9 years ago means that members and visitors can now bowl 12 months of the year. More recently, with the introduction of barefoot bowls, thousands of people, groups, parents and families have enjoyed a social bowl and our wonderful facilities and environment. A great foundation for the net 130 years. See more

16.01.2022 Bowls England is saddened to learn of the passing of the man regarded by many as the greatest lawn bowler of all time, David J. Bryant CBE, at the age of 88. David won five Commonwealth Games gold medals, eleven World Outdoor Bowls Championship medals and nine titles at the World Indoor Championships during an illustrious career. He was widely recognisable as the face of bowls and was renowned for using a tobacco pipe whilst playing. He was awarded the MBE and then CBE for se...rvices to lawn bowls. David Tucker, Bowls England Board Chair, said: David was an icon for many decades, whose name was synonymous with our sport. He was well-respected by all who knew him. I was fortunate to compete against David on the green on many occasions, often coming on the wrong end of the scoreline, but a match against him was always a pleasure and includes many memories that I will never forget. My thoughts are with David’s family and friends at this time. Read the full obituary here: https://www.bowlsengland.com/obituary-david-j-bryant-cbe-s/

13.01.2022 Once you hear the jingle, it’s hard to get it out of your head. Cancer Council first brought Sid Seagull onto our screens in the 1980s, and today, his message i...s as important as ever. This National Skin Cancer Action Week, we’re teaming with the Australian College of Dermatologists to bring him back, and encourage all those ‘80s kids who are now parents themselves to Stay SunSmart this summer. A lot has changed since the ‘80s, but it’s still the same sun. UV radiation is just as dangerous, and sun protection is still the best defence against skin cancer.

11.01.2022 Severe thunderstorm warnings are current in multiple States this afternoon, and likely to continue across eastern and southeastern Australia with widespread sho...wers and rain on Friday and into the weekend. This afternoon we have already observed a 122km/h wind gust at Roma in Qld and 98km/h at Coober Pedy in SA with thunderstorms. Severe thunderstorms are likely to impact Qld, NSW, Vic, SA and NT on Friday, before contracting to Qld, NSW and eastern Vic over the weekend. While capital cities will generally be spared the worst of the weather, rural and regional communities may see significant impacts, with damaging winds, heavy to intense rainfall leading to flash flooding and large hail possible over the coming days. Flood watches are current in SA and Vic for Friday and a Severe Weather Warning is also current in Vic for rain and storms that could become heavy Friday night into Saturday morning. Widespread rain and thunderstorm activity over the coming days could be of major concern for agricultural areas, particularly dry land crops that are approaching or currently harvesting crops. Know your weather. Know your risk. Stay up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings at www.bom.gov.au or on the BOM Weather app, and keep an eye on approaching storms on the radar.
