24.01.2022 OCD and Anxiety Disorders Week the (3-10 August) Massages reduce stress and anxiety Have high blood pressure? Stressed after surgery? New research suggests your doctor could prescribe gentle massage to augment more traditional hospital treatments.... Gentle massage that involves a slow, light, stroking of the skin doesnt just feel good -- it can lower your blood pressure. Massage feels good, without a doubt. But does it have therapeutic value above and beyond just making us feel nice? The answer, according to research conducted at Ume University in Sweden, is yes. Lenita Lindgren measured blood pressure, glucose and insulin levels before, during and after a specific type of massage, called touch or tactile massage, as part of her PhD research. She also charted the feelings of people who had just been given the massage. Lindgren concluded that tactile massage can reduce anxiety among patients after theyve undergone major surgery and also reduce stress in healthy persons. Recipients felt better and more relaxed. In addition to the improvements reported by study participants, monitoring showed a decrease in blood pressure and participants found it easier to breathe. (By: Jon Ludvig Hammer)

23.01.2022 Taking Care of Mental Health in During Pregnancy Pregnancy can be an exciting time in your life, but it can also involve a great deal of worry and stress. Around one in ten Australian women will develop depression during pregnancy and its likely a similar proportion will develop anxiety disorders, with or without depression. But help is available.... - Pregnancy highs and lows Common concerns and worries during pregnancy relate to: The health of your baby Labour and the birth itself The impact your baby may have on your finances, lifestyle and relationships How you will cope as a parent. Pregnancy can be a particularly stressful time if you have undergone fertility treatment or experienced previous pregnancy losses, if you are not in a stable relationship or if you are very young. - When to seek help When you consider all the physical, social and emotional changes that take place during pregnancy, its hardly surprising some women will develop mental health problems like anxiety and depression. While those who have experienced mental health problems in the past are at greater risk, any woman may be affected. - Potential warning signs for mental health conditions during pregnancy include: Feeling sad, miserable, numb, inadequate, guilty, empty or helpless Loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities Feeling so unhappy that you have difficulty sleeping or you have been crying Blaming yourself unnecessarily when things go wrong Feeling anxious, worried, scared or panicky for no good reason Feeling that things have been getting on top of you Thoughts about harming yourself. (By Kate Kellaway) - Expert help If youve been feeling down, sad, anxious or worried for more than a couple of weeks, youre finding it difficult to manage or your feelings are starting to impact upon your life, now is the time to take action. The earlier you seek help the sooner you can get on the road to recovery. Your first port of call should be your local GP, your obstetrician or your midwife. Depending on your condition and personal circumstances, you may be prescribed specific treatment or referred directly to the care of a psychologist or perhaps a psychiatrist, a doctor who specialises in the management of mental health. In addition to performing a thorough assessment, a psychiatrist or psychologist can prepare an appropriate management plan and provide ongoing treatment and assistance. Treatment typically involves counselling and sometimes medication (which must be prescribed by a doctor).

21.01.2022 Massage Therapy What You Knead to Know Many people associate massage with vacations or spas and consider them something of a luxury. But research is beginning to suggest this ancient form of hands-on healing may be more than an indulgencemay help improve your health.... Massage therapists use their fingers, hands, forearms and elbows to manipulate the muscles and other soft tissues of the body. Variations in focus and technique lead to different types of massage, including Swedish, deep tissue and sports massage. In Swedish massage, the focus is general and the therapist may use long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibration and tapping. With a deep tissue massage, the focus is more targeted, as therapists work on specific areas of concern or pain. These areas may have muscle knots or places of tissue restriction. Some common reasons for getting a massage are to relieve pain, heal sports injuries, reduce stress, relax, ease anxiety or depression, and aid general wellness. Unfortunately, scientific evidence on massage therapy is limited. Researchers are actively trying to understand exactly how massage works, how much is best, and how it might help with specific health conditions. Some positive benefits have been reported. Massage therapy has been noted to relax the nervous system by slowing heart rate and blood pressure. Stress and pain hormones are also decreased by massage, reducing pain and enhancing immune function, says Dr. Tiffany Field, who heads a touch research institute at the University of Miami Medical School. Much of her NIH-funded research focuses on the importance of massage for pregnant women and infants. Some of her studies suggest that massage may improve weight gain and immune system function in preterm infants. A study published earlier this year looked at how massage affects muscles at the molecular level. The findings suggest that kneading eases sore muscles after exercise by turning off genes associated with inflammation and turning on genes that help muscles heal. A recent NIH-supported study found that an hour-long dose of Swedish massage therapy once a week was optimal for knee pain from osteoarthritis, especially when practical matters like time, labor and convenience were considered. Other research suggests that massage therapy is effective in reducing and managing chronic low-back pain, which affects millions of Americans. If youre considering massage therapy for a specific medical condition, talk with your health care provider. Never use massage to replace your regular medical care or as a reason to postpone seeing a health care professional. Every therapist and every massage is unique. If you decide to try massage therapy, work with different therapists until you find one that meets your needs. One of the best ways to get a great massage is to communicate with your therapist. Most will check in with you during your session for feedback, butif notspeak up! Source: NIH News in Health

06.01.2022 WHAT IS MYOTHERAPY? By Steve Hore Do you often collapse into bed at the end of a hard day with tight, sore muscles? If so, perhaps you should consider myotherapy.... At some stage of our lives most of us have experienced aching and tension in our muscles. This discomfit may have its origins in overload or misuse of the muscles during work or sport. Myotherapy assists in the treatment of muscle conditions that cause pain and restrict movement. So how does myotherapy work? Sometimes our muscles develop sore spots. These may be associated with an abnormal muscle contraction, such as a spasm, or due to adhesions or small tears. The myotherapist first locates the area of soreness and then uses a variety of treatment methods to restore the integrity of the muscle. Massage Various massage techniques are used to restore the muscles and the tissues separating and surrounding them. One technique is known as trigger point therapy. The myotherapist applies direct pressure to the sore spot or trigger point within the muscle. While initially painful, the technique assists in releasing the spasm and easing the soreness. Stretching and movement Stretching and corrective exercise is used to develop flexibility and restore muscle balance. The myotherapist actively moves the muscles and joints through a full range of motion and provides stretching exercises that the patient can perform by themselves. What can myotherapy do for you? In Australia, the myotherapy qualification is a three year advanced diploma that includes extensive study in anatomy, physiology and the treatment methods. Students also complete clinical hours working under the supervision of qualified myotherapists before they are eligible to be registered. Most Health Funds have recognised the benefits of myotherapy and include it in their list of services. Myotherapy assists in injury prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. It has been used to successfully treat muscle pain, headache, repetitive movement disorders, fibromyalgia, sciatica and carpel tunnel syndrome. Myotherapy provides an immediate relief from muscle related pain and can also involve corrective exercises to reduce the likelihood of recurrence. Myotherapy tends to work quite quickly and usually patients will only require a small number of consultations. There are, however, conditions that will not respond to it. Myotherapy will not assist pain other than that related to muscle disorders. Also, people with conditions that may be aggravated by the application of pressure should avoid it. Such conditions may include blood vessel disease or recent surgery. A further word of caution. Pressure on the trigger points is quite painful and can cause bruising.

04.01.2022 According to the Mental Health Council of Australia, depression and anxiety are the most prevalent mental disorders experienced by Australians - around one million Australian adults and 100,000 young people live with depression each year (Beyondblue National Initiative, 2006). As massage therapists, it is likely we will be treating clients who suffer from depression and anxiety. This TED talk by writer Andrew Solomon gives valuable insight into this devastating illness.
