25.01.2022 Freeform beast.

25.01.2022 I like to make sure the integrity of my knives are constantly tested during and after the process of making them. For the blade, I can test the hardness with specially rated files. I can test the durability by introducing it to hardwood, brass, mild steel, and concrete. The fineness of the edge is usually a shaving test. And a lot of the time they test me with a bite or two, just to let me know they're keen. One of the most satisfying tests is edge retention. Every sheath I make is produced only by the edge which it is intended to house, from cutting the first outline from the hide, paring and trimming and skiving to shape, even down to cutting off the thread or lace which sews it together. It's a nice feeling, that this is how they first get to know each other. And it is always satisfying to work with a sharp knife.

25.01.2022 A san-mai puukko blade, forged mostly to try out a piece of wrought iron I picked up from a small town in Victoria's alpine country last year. I have to say, I really like the composition of material in the grain

25.01.2022 A sharp, sturdy, camp knife with graceful lines. This knife has a full tang construction, and it features a 6.5" blade with a convex edge profile, and a forged ...integral finger well. The blade is made from antique wrought and has vintage file steel as the San Mai core. The handle is made from Melaleuca, with canvas liners obtained from a worn out U.S. army M-1945 field cargo pack. The sheath is tooled vintage veg tan leather, with kangaroo hide lacing. See more

24.01.2022 A blade for an 8th century Norse light broadseax, just polished and etched. The core is pattern welded steel and iron, the edge bar is antique file steel, and the spine is refined wrought iron.

23.01.2022 My new flypress, Bluestone. I built the stand from scrap iron and steels, an old butchers block for the base, and reclaimed paving stones from the streets of Melbourne.

22.01.2022 An artist I greatly admire.

21.01.2022 If you're looking to invest in forest conservation, this is a local mob in my neck of the woods who are serving justice like pros.

21.01.2022 This deba is disrespectful to cabbage.

21.01.2022 A short tanto blade in its last shaping stages. Antique iron and spring steel folded over antique file steel core. Still dreaming up the handle.

19.01.2022 Wolf and Clem helping with the final stages of cementing the new forge.

19.01.2022 Forged knives. For sale, see comments below.

18.01.2022 Stunning colour in the surface oxides after tempering this pattern welded seax.

18.01.2022 Even if I want to keep a rough look on a blade, polishing is still an essential process if you want to make a functional tool out of recycled steel. It's the top tier method of inspecting steel for fractures, cracks or other features which could cause failure in a blade. So for steel that has already lived one lifetime or two, it's always good to make certain it's ready to go for another one.

17.01.2022 Massive thanks to the legend Ken Tanks for gifting this amazing length of Osage Orange, currently under transformation to a new hammer stave.

16.01.2022 Found my new handle clamp.

15.01.2022 It seems I've built a war machine.

15.01.2022 A professional quality chef knife with a stunning Wood Beetle damascus blade. This knife has a handle made native Red Mallee burl (stabilised by Dean Cassai), and a solder-fused copper and brass bolster. The blade is pattern welded with go-mai construction, consisting of antique puddle iron, nickel, and recycled tool steels. The core is 80crv2 carbon steel. The 8" cutting edge is flat ground with a secondary bevel, and the knife is a touch over 13" total. When not in use the blade is protected by saya hand carved from reclaimed red cedar, with bronze fitting. Exceptionally well balanced for daily kitchen use, but with a unique and naturally inspired look. Available. 950au plus shipping.

14.01.2022 I didn't make this knife, I purchased it from the Australian knife maker, Paul-Emmanuel Arestan, who is producing a new line of folders, Smoko Knives. Why buy a knife when I can make one? Well, I wanted a stainless steel utility folding knife, and if I can only afford one, I night as well find the best quality. The blade and steel quality of this knife is peak, put together in a strong and functional design, all with the exceptional style of an artist. You can buy this and a whole lot more at www.creativeman.com.au, a great store who supplies my moose antler pieces, among other things. Check them out if you have an interest in making your own knives.

14.01.2022 If anyone needs more info, someone has put together this excellent guide on the terminology of knife and sword tangs.

13.01.2022 Worth living for.

13.01.2022 My new Mamma Jamma. Now to disassemble it, clean it, build a stand, and reassemble. Then do some forging. Clem approves. Thanks again Thanh.

10.01.2022 What is it? Any guesses?

09.01.2022 Can anyone please ID these moths? They’d be close to 5cm long. There are a bunch of them at our house - volcano country, Western District.

08.01.2022 Redgum hammer handle. This hammer head has a reputation for breaking handles, so let's see how we go this time.

07.01.2022 Massive thanks to Barry Rea for donating my newest respirator. An essential bit of kit, both for operating power tools and piloting a Y-Wing around the moons of Yavin.

07.01.2022 The new base for my fly press is coming along. It does resemble a fly, I have been informed, which I think is quite remarkable.

06.01.2022 Hi guys, sorry I haven't posted much work in a while. My gas forge is half busted and needs repair before I can use it again. And the rest of my workshop is undergoing renovations, which will hopefully evolve my output in the future, but currently looks like the epicenter of chaos. Fun times. Hopefully be up and running with some very new things soon, and some old things as well, so keep an eye out.

06.01.2022 New forge is coming along..

05.01.2022 My brand new old compressor.

04.01.2022 Getting a good final fit for some brass washers.

04.01.2022 I really enjoy testing knives as I'm working. You'd be surprised how much adrenaline goes into it.

03.01.2022 The market had to close, so I got my sons to help me bring it back to the factory. If you need a nice cutting board, message me and we can do a deal. They will all appear in my facebook shop over the next week or so. They can be posted anywhere in Australia.
