25.01.2022 The Finding of Little Obelia - Snugglepot & Cuddlepie Artist: May Gibbs Published: Sydney, 1949... Original coloured print taken from The Complete Adventures of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. Published Sydney 1949. Cecilia May Gibbs was born on the 17th January 1877 in Kent, England. She arrived in Adelaide in 1881. Both of her parents were artistic having met and married whilst studying Art at the School of Design, South Kensington. Her father, Herbert was appointed drawing master at Perth High School in 1890. May was schooled in Perth before studying art in England at the Cope and Nichol School, Chelsea and the Henry Blackburn School of Black and White art between 1901 and 1904. She earned a living by doing sketches of soldiers departing for World War 1, designing covers for the Sydney Mail, contributing to The Tatler and other magazines. She published Gumnut Babies in 1916 and Snugglepot and Cuddlepie in 1918 to great success. She married in 1919 and lived with her husband in Nutcote Neutral Bay, Sydney and continued to publish delighting generations of children with her Gumnut series. Her success wained in the 1930s however she kept publishing until 1954. She was appointed an MBE in 1955. May Gibbs died childless in 1969 bequeathing all her estate to the NSW Society for Crippled Children and the NSW Spastic Centre. 23.01.2022 North Italy, 1704 Map Makers: Johannes Blaeu, Pierre Mortier Published: Amsterdam, 1705... Pieter (1661 1711) and David Mortier were brothers of French extraction whose publishing interests in Amsterdam covered a wide field embracing French and English works as well as Dutch. Pieter was probably trained in the bookselling business in Paris, and David, spent many years in England; in fact, he acquired British nationality and died there in about 1728. After Pieters death, his widow continued the business until their son, Cornelis, was able to take over; then, in 1721, Cornelis entered into partnership with his brother-in-law, Johannes Covens, to form the famous name Covens and Mortier, a firm which continued in being, with slight change of name until the middle of the nineteenth century. Johannes Blaeu published, during his life three town-books of Italy; Citta del Vaticano, Roma and Napoli. The fire of 1672 largely destroyed the main Blaeu workshop in Gravenstraat, Amsterdam, and much of the prepared material., However, even though Blaeu died the following year, work on the town-books continued, and in 1682 the completed work was published in Amsterdam by his heirs. The town-book was a great success and reissued several times by different publishers in Amsterdam, as late as 1726. Pierre Mortier re-issued all the Blaeu plates for the town book in the years 1704/05 (after acquiring them when the Blaeu firm finally closed in 1695) in an atlas comprising of four volumes. Seguy produced eleven albums of exquisite illustrations and designs from the turn of the century to the 1930s, and his style reflected the influences of both Art Nouveau and Art Deco.His various colour portfolios of visual ideas for artists and designers featured motifs based on the natural world, including flowers, foliage, crystals and animals and insects and butterflies. The prints in the portfolios were produced using the pochoir technique characterized by rich, intense color.This printing process, utilized in the early 20th century for high quality prints, involved applying each colour to each plate with a number of stencils, the precursor to the modern technique of screen printing which artists use today. 15.01.2022 Balearic Isles 1650 Map maker: Joannes Jansson Expanded title: Insvlae Balerides et Pytivase - Decorative map of the Balearic Islands: Majorca, Minorca, showing the adjoining Spanish coastline ... Published: Amsterdam, 1650 Johannes Jannson (1588-1664) was born in Arnhem where his father was a bookseller and publisher. In 1612 he married the daughter of Jodocus Hondius, the cartographer and publisher and established his own business in Amsterdam as a book publisher. He produced his first maps in 1616 and subsequently he produced a enormous amount of maps, perhaps not rivalling the Blaeu family running a very close second in quantity and quality. From 1630 to 1638 he went into partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, issuing further editions of the Mercator/Hondius Atlases to which his name was added. On the death of Henricus he took over the business expanding the Atlas still further, eventually publishing an 11 volume Atlas Major in 1662, on a scale similar to Blaeus Atlas Major. 10.01.2022 Rare mapping of Australias southern coast, 1792 Map Maker: Joseph-Antoine Raymond Bruny DEntrecasteaux Published: Paris, 1807, 1808... Very rare copper engraved map of the southern coast of Western Australia from King George Sound to Shoal Cape showing the tracks of the Recherche and Esperance in December 1792. Relief shown by hachures in the lower right margin, the engravers name Grave par E.Collins and the PRIX 1f 50c underneath. Joseph Antoine Bruny-dEntrecasteaux was born ain Aix-en-Provence in 1739 and died at sea in 1793. He entered the marine service at the age of 15, and soon won praise for his work as a hydrographer. He became governor of the islands of Mauritius and Bourbon. Later in 1791 he was put in charge of the expedition to search for la Perouse. During his voyage he explored, mapped and named many places on the coast of Australia. Baie de la Recherche, Port dlEsperance, Detroit dEntrecasteaux etc. The atlas Atlas du Voyage de dEntrecasteaux Envoye a la Recherche de la Perouse was published in Paris in 1807, 1808. The charts prepared for DEntrecasteaux mostly by Beautemps-Beaupre were of a very high quality and Matthew Flinders, the English explorer and hydrographer calling them the finest specimens of marine survey. The contribution made by DEntrecasteaux to the mapping of the southern coast of Australia was considerable.
