25.01.2022 Ruby Rose is a stunning Red-tailed Black Cockatoo who came to see us as she had been lethargic and quiet for a couple of days (this is particularly worrisome in birds!). X-rays showed that in her younger years she had, likely due to calcium deficiency, developed bone deformities and hairline fractures. While Ruby Rose is stuck with these funny limbs that shouldn't be causing her any grief. However we suspect, based on a blood test, that the cause of her lethargy was Psit...tacosis - a bacteria that can make birds AND humans very sick. 24.01.2022 Anyone who has ever wrestled with their cat to administer oral medication will know that it isn't always an easy task! Here are some tips to help keep your kitty calm and to ensure that you remain scratch-free. 1. If the tablet is small enough and can be given with food, your cat may take it hidden in a small amount of soft cat food.... 2. If you are administering the tablet by hand you will need to restrain your cat either by hand or with a towel. It often helps to have a second person to hold your cat while you give the tablet. 3. Hold the tablet between the thumb and forefinger of one hand. Place the other hand on the top of your cat’s head. Gently tilt the head upwards, and use the middle finger of the hand holding the tablet to pull the lower jaw down and open the mouth. Keep the head tilted up and quickly place or drop the tablet as far back on your cat’s tongue as you can. Hold the jaw closed for a few seconds and wait for your cat to swallow. Gently rubbing the throat under the chin may help. If your cat licks his lips or nose, you know he has swallowed. If you're having trouble and you'd like some assistance please call us. 23.01.2022 Ziggy has an eating disorder and it really caught up to her last week. She feasted on a leather table mat! Fortunately we were able remove all that leather surgically and now she is her happy self again. Dont eat table mats Ziggy, eat food ON tablet mats!

23.01.2022 Remembrance Day 2020 The pigeon was a hard-working military bird. Pigeons can fly fast over very long distances - without stopping - and they have very strong 'homing' instincts to help them find their way back home to their loft. The Australian Corps Signal Company used pigeons which were delivered to the front line in baskets and released with messages on the situation.... The birds would carry messages in small containers attached to their legs, or in small pouches looped over their backs. When a pigeon returned to the loft, its message was secured and the valuable information was reported. Sometimes a message didn't get back to base. Pigeons could be shot down by the enemy, blown off course in bad weather, or die of exhaustion. Today we remember all of the animals who lost their lives in wars. As tempting as it is to 'rescue' a young bird on the ground, in most cases it is not necessary, and may, in fact, drastically reduce its chances of survival. 15.01.2022 Diabetes is a complex disease and as a result management is often complex as well. Here at Woodvale Park Vet we employ gold standard practices. This is Ruby Rose, one of our diabetic patients, pictured with her in-dwelling glucometer. Traditionally glucose curves were performed in hospital but the stress of hospitalization and being poked with a needle every 1-2 hours gave highly erroneous results. To overcome this we use in-dwelling glucometers which can be checked using a mobile phone - it gives an glucose reading every 15 seconds for 10 days!

She diagnosed him with a respiratory infection and prescribed antibiotics for him to go home with.
