23.01.2022 Take Action Of Your Finances and Be Proactive Not Reactive Following on from last weeks tips on improving your credit file and considering what is happening around the globe with coronavirus I just wanted to reiterate the importance of making your finance and utility commitments on time. Everyone is in a state of panic and uncertainty so if you find your income is affected during this time make sure you’re in constant contact with the lender or provider to avoid any late fee...s or defaults being listed on your credit file. Hopefully the government will release a stimulus package which will offer some relief however now is the time for you to take action of your own finances. If you aren’t already a budgeting extraordinaire, I’ve got a couple of suggestions to help with budgeting for your commitments. Firstly, if you have monthly, quarterly or yearly commitments but you are paid on a weekly or fortnightly basis, I recommend opening another bank account and transferring the weekly/fortnightly amount over. If you are paid monthly, again, open a separate bank account, calculate how much you need to cover bills and living expenses. Then transfer yourself a weekly wage to cover these expenses. I find breaking things down to smaller amounts makes everything a little more manageable. Here’s a couple of examples- Phone & Internet Bill- $100 per month breaks down to $25 per week. Electricity Bill- $400 per quarter breaks down to roughly $33 per week. Car Registration- $800 per year breaks down to roughly $16 per week. Secondly, if you aren’t already doing so automate what you can. Automate your commitments, automate your savings and spend within your means. Thirdly, challenge yourself to a non-spending day or two and then try a week! This will be much easier to do during a workday or in quarantine. This is one way you will learn there are many things you can live without or cut back on. Lastly, if you feel like your debt and commitments are getting on top of you and you cannot manage them please explore all of your options and consider a consolidation loan to make the payments more manageable for the mean time. It is better to go through this process before you are missing repayments, or you are well behind. If you aren’t proactive and you are reactive it could mean that your only option is a part IX debt agreement or bankruptcy. Bankruptcy can have a serious impact on you, it can affect your ability to borrow, it can affect you travelling, and it can affect some types of employment. I was in my car for 15 minutes today and I was bombarded by advertising for a new short-term money lending company that has recently entered into the market. ‘Get money in a hurry’ is their motto. Yeah right. I just really want to make it abundantly clear to everybody out there how detrimental these types of loans are when it comes to applying for things like car loans, personal loans and mortgages. Finance companies will NOT be interested in lending you money if you utilize these short-term loans. We understand everyone needs money to survive, but we would urge you to consider other means before resorting to this. Getting money in a hurry now, will make it near impossible in the future. 03.01.2022 Hello and Happy Tuesday I briefly touched on this on my story however I wanted to go into a little more detail. Christmas might be behind us but you might still have some Christmas debt hanging over your head So in this post I’m going to go through my top 3 tips for paying off your credit card debt. ... 1Super simple- pay it off! Don’t just pay the minimum monthly repayment. Your credit card statement will now tell you how long it will take you to pay off your card if you only make your minimum repayment. Look at where you can reduce your spending. Only spend on necessities and put anything leftover onto your credit card. Think short term pain for long term gain. 2 If you aren’t making a dent in paying it off then perhaps take a look at doing a balance transfer. For those who aren’t familiar with balance transfers it does involve getting approved for another credit card (this is one downside) but depending on the provider you can usually transfer your existing debt for 0% interest for between 12 months and up to 26 months. So you should be able to get ahead but don’t forget to close the card you have balance transferred because it could come back to bite you in the future with any future loan applications. 3 If you have got yourself into a sticky situation with multiple debts and you are feeling overwhelmed perhaps a debt consolidation loan might be a wise option. It’s something to consider when you need to reduce your overall monthly outgoings. If you are having problems making your repayments then it’s definitely worth having a chat with an experienced broker who may be able to alleviate some stress with consolidating all your debts into one payment to make the payments more manageable. Don’t fall into the trap of entering into a debt agreement or a part IX before considering a debt consolidation. A debt agreement is a form of bankruptcy that can stick around for years. It can also impact more than just your ability to borrow money. Debt agreements and bankruptcy is probably another topic I will touch on in the near future. Just a side note on credit cards - if you have open credit cards that you do not use I strongly suggest either closing them off or reducing the limit to something you could pay off each month. Lenders always take into account the limit on your card and not just how much is owing. So this can affect your borrowing abilities for home loans and car loans.
