20.01.2022 From a young age, internationally bestselling author Heather Morris discovered that people would tell her their stories if she stopped and listened. In her first non-fiction book 'Stories of Hope', Heather explores the art of listening a skill she employed when she met Lale Sokolov, the Tattooist of Auschwitz. It was her ability to listen that led him to entrust her with his story. 16.01.2022 Did you catch anything at Melbourne Writers Festival (or perhaps Canberra Writers Festival) recently? Our team enjoyed being able to access a stellar line up of authors from across the country (from the comfort of our couches...) This article in The Age by Jane Sullivan ponders some of the joys of an online writers festival. She says "I hope digital writers’ sessions will continue after the pandemic. 15.01.2022 Truth-telling is a dangerous business. Writers and journalists are often among the first citizens to find themselves in danger in areas of conflict and political unrest. The festival celebrates truth-telling and giving a stage to thought-provoking writers. This is a privilege not afforded to everyone. You may have seen The PEN Empty Chair at the festival, which symbolises a writer who could not be present because they were imprisoned, detained, disappeared, threatened or k...illed. At Word for Word 2019, the PEN Empty Chair was dedicated to Iranian journalist and human rights activist Narges Mohammadi. 14.01.2022 Dear Word for Word supporters, There is one thing COVID-19 has done for us all. It has provided clarity about what’s really important. Has there ever been a time when non-fiction has been more relevant or needed? Has there ever been a time when we’ve had access to so much information but find ourselves sifting through it all for factual, researched writing and balanced, expert opinion? Our hearts go out to all our industry colleagues and friends whose literary festivals, auth...or events and book launches have been cancelled or postponed. We are doing our best to stay positive, be responsible citizens and focus our creative energies on planning the next Word for Word National Non-Fiction Festival. Whether it will take place on 20-22 November this year as planned, at another time or in an exciting new format, we can’t answer that yet. But there is something wonderful about the thought that the kitchen tables of the world, rather than the board rooms, will be the birth places of future fantastic ideas. Stay tuned! Thank you and be well, The Word for Word Festival Team. See more
