25.01.2022 Comment as Word of Mouth Word of Mouth Published by Sarah Mills Just now Looking for something delicious to eat this weekend? We served Richard Glover this 70s favourite Steak Diane in honour of his novel The Land Before Avocado. One of the reasons it was so popular was because it tasted so good, although, like most things 70s, it fell out of fashion. Time for a revival? Im hankering for Steak Diane just writing this post. Enjoy! Richard Glover Debra Oswald Kate Forsyth #books #food #recipe Blackwords - AustLit https://bit.ly/2T6NUIi

23.01.2022 Hello ladies and gents. What a wonderful time weve had producing Word of Mouth TV. We hope youve enjoyed our episodes and the spirit behind our endeavour to help you meet some of your favourite authors. Given the dearth of book shows or nod to literature on TV, we wanted to try and swing the scales in the opposite direction just a little bit: less football, more culture!! More civilisation!! Australia has so much to offer, and Australia truly has a vibrant, interesting, generous cultural heart. Thank you for celebrating this with us, and we recommend this final post for the season wherein we reveal the future of Word of Mouth TV. #books #food #wordofmouthtv #kateforsyth #slmills #amreading #iamreading #amwriting https://bit.ly/2vYdYN5

20.01.2022 When I was a child, I read & re-read my mothers battered old copies of Gene Stratton Porters books about feisty girls who loved nature. I think they helped make me the nature-loving woman I am now. A great article about her life & work - an undeservedly forgotten author!

19.01.2022 ICYMI: ABC talk-radio presenter and author of The Land Before Avocado, Richard Glover, shares his thoughts on the 1970s with Word of Mouth TV in this Q&A. After incorporating extensive research and personal experience, he reminds us that the Australia of 50 years ago is not the great place that nostalgic, dewy-eyed boomers would have us believe: it was boring, insular, authoritarian and intolerant. In fact, life today is better on nearly every metric. Something to feel good about! Enjoy! https://bit.ly/2SYwEEZ #books #authors #Australia #1970s Richard Glover Debra Oswald HarperCollins

19.01.2022 To celebrate Richard Glovers book, The Land Before Avocado, set in Australia in the 1970s, we have opted for another modern author, Sylvia Plath, as the subject of our iconic literary food moment. 16.01.2022 Charles Dickens died on this day in 1870 at his home, Gadshill. Charles Dickens on his deathbed by J.E. Millais. Alfred Tennyson saw the sketch hanging in Millais studio and after staring at it for sometime said, This is the most extraordinary drawing. It is exactly like myself.

15.01.2022 A post by one of Word of Mouth TVs authors, Natasha Lester, that reminds me of another one of our authors, Charlotte Smith, the owner of the worlds largest vintage haute couture fashion collection. Fashion, food and books - the stuff of a life well lived.

14.01.2022 Peaches are in season, so what better way to celebrate Debra Oswalds novel The Whole Bright Year, set on an Australian peach farm, than with a Peach Melba. This famous dessert was invented in honour of the great Australian soprano Dame Nellie Melba in the 1890s. So: Australia and peaches - Word of Mouth TV has it covered! The kids will love it and they get a taste of Australian history in the same mouthful. 12.01.2022 I love 60s fashion so I think I will check this out on Netflix. Has anyone seen it. It's about gender bias and the cold war - and follows the life of an incredible female chess player and is based on the 1983 novel by Walter Tevis.

10.01.2022 Woo-hoo!! Its the beginning of the week and were kicking off with the second instalment of our Debra Oswald and Richard Glover special (the Richard Glover half). We thought wed start with a book review of Richard Glovers the Land Before Avocado, set in Australia in the 1970s. Despite being the land of plenty, Australians endured a myriad of deprivations, which Richard investigates with excruciating humour. The cars, the food, the fashion - they all left something to be de...sired. Yet the clumsiness of the period is reminiscent of any pubescent teenager, and The Land Before Avocado reminds us that the 1970s was a tipping point for Australia, the decade in which it graduated from small pants to big pants. A wonderful read. https://bit.ly/32gS8A0 Debra Oswald Richard Glover #books #reviews #reading HarperCollins Kate Forsyth #Australia #1970s See more

10.01.2022 Today we have made the inevitable but nonetheless devastating decision to cancel this years Sydney Writers Festival, which was scheduled to run from 27 April ...to 3 May. In light of current public health advice regarding the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), and non-essential public gatherings of more than 500 people, it is impossible and inadvisable to proceed with the 2020 Festival. This is an unprecedented, deeply upsetting and challenging time for everyone, but the health and safety of authors, audiences, staff, publishers, volunteers and our community must come first. We recognise that the cancellation of this years Festival will have a significant impact on the literary community, and especially on writers whose work was to be featured for the first time in this program. We urge you our audience and community to support these authors and your local booksellers in what is sure to be a challenging year. The 2020 Festival is now a time capsule, representing a program of 437 writers from 14 countries appearing across 346 events. It is also a wide-ranging reading list featuring our worlds most exhilarating, honest, clever, ambitious, joyful and disquieting writers. Look to the Festivals digital and podcast channels in the coming weeks and months as we highlight, support and celebrate the work of the writers in this years program. We are facing an extraordinarily challenging moment in the 23-year history of the Festival. And without box office revenue, there will be more difficult times ahead. But Sydney Writers Festival will return in 2021. Customers who purchased tickets for the 2020 Sydney Writers Festival, our schools programs, and our event with Patti Smith and Paul Kelly at Sydney Town Hall on 8 April will be contacted for reimbursement. We are very grateful for the loyalty and understanding of the Sydney Writers Festival community. We wish you well during this time and look forward to seeing you at the 2021 Festival.
