25.01.2022 TL:DR Embrace your competition as your collaborators. About 4 years ago, I stumbled across The Clever Copywriting School. ... It was an online community for copywriters to come together and hone their skills, learn their craft and share their stories. Expecting ego and suspicion and competition, I was quickly enamoured with a space that only provided support and knowledge and collaboration. Each day for the first year, Id head into the group, read what others were saying and absorb their words of wisdom. After a while, I stopped being the new shy kid in the group and started sharing my experiences, what I knew and offering support when I could. As a freelancer, it became my online office watercooler. The place to share the highs and lows of running a business. Here were 250 other skilled people, all doing the same job, all having similar experiences. And somewhere along the way, the tidbits of knowledge Id gleaned from past experiences, became useful for other people. This year, those people thought Id helped them enough to deserve The Clever Copywriting School Member of the Year Award. And I couldnt be more humbled. And I couldnt be happier to share it with the lovely Anna Rogan. Im not a great copywriter or business leader. I certainly dont have all the answers. But I do have a genuine desire to see anyone whos made the great leap into business for themselves, succeed. Sometimes its a kind word of support. Other times its a spoonful of honesty. Sometimes its just a good laugh. But watching people chase their goals in their chosen field and grow in confidence, be it copywriting or any other industry, warms this heart and provides inspiration to keep on giving wherever I can. And if you want to be a part of, or learn how to build, online communities that will rock your world, follow Kate Toon. She really is amazing.
25.01.2022 Often when reviewing web copy of solo business owners I come across the use of we to make it seem the business is larger than it is. The question I always ask is, why? Why are you afraid to let your clients know its just you?... Why are you hiding behind an invisible team? Why do you think we makes you look more professional than I? When you dig deep enough theres usually fear around accountability, ownership and ego. But if youre the body, life and soul of your business, own it. Be proud of it. And write in the first person. Because a real I is always better than a fake we.
25.01.2022 So what does being Tender Ready mean? Other than downloading the documents and submitting your pricing, what else do you need? Winning a tender is more than just the lowest price.... As a minimum, here are 7 key documents you need in your suite of material for responding to a bid: Company Profile Capability Statement Financials Current CVs for key staff Updated project information A clearly defined process on how you work Statements on Safety, Quality, Environment, Local Content Consider creating base templates for each of the above, that can then be edited to suit the submission. You can have a number of these depending on the work youre tendering for. This stops the gut-dropping realisation that you forgot to change all the client names from the cut and paste job you did, when you sent off your latest bid (and weve all been there!) Any questions, feel free to ask.
25.01.2022 And just like that, another week is nearly done.
25.01.2022 Date night with two fabulous Yorkshiremen both of whom can engage in fabulous storytelling! Happy anniversary Tom Fallon xxx
24.01.2022 Lots of birthday love for me and Words That Fit this year. Husband and I have a tradition for present giving. Every special event, we give three gifts:... Something we want. Something we need. Something to keep. He nailed it...and completely on brand.
24.01.2022 I dont know if its because weve been bingeing The Big Bang Theory during isolation, or just because I love a good play on words, but I always find this hilarious. And if like me, youve returned your small Jedis to the yodas we call teachers and youre now at your desk so your Empire can strike back, enjoy the peace and quiet. But if youre still stuck at home with your phantom menaces or the clones are attacking, remember that each day brings a New Hope. And fingers cro...ssed, unlike Star Wars sequels and prequels, this wont go on forever. E
23.01.2022 WORDS FOR A WEDNESDAY Dear Wednesday Today youve kicked my arse. ... We started the day off beautifully together, but by the end, our relationship is just tiring and draining. Dont get me wrong, I love having you in my life, mid-week. You remind me ever so gently that the hardest days are over and the fun ones are just around the corner. But today, Im just over you and looking forward to waking up in my bed and finding Thursday there waiting for me. But rest assured. Its not you. Its me. And I know that I need to change the way I think about you. If were to have a long and happy life together, Ill need to find a way to get over your humpiness and stop secretly wishing you were, in fact, Saturday. Until next week, when we meet again at the same time in the same place. Me.
22.01.2022 Way back in the day, in the year's B.C. (before children), I was a tender writer and coordinator, helping businesses win work. It was something I'd always done in the roles I had, and something I absolutely loved doing. To me, they were just a natural part of work and business life. Therefore, I was a little surprised when I started talking with other copywriters and business owners about tendering and competitive bidding. There seemed to be this (dare I say it?) fear of tack...ling a tender. Somewhere along the line, this collection of documents had taken on a dark persona of their own. It was like they were the Voldemort of business; the they-that-shall-not-be-named. So, when I got the opportunity to join the fabulous Kate Toon and wonderful Belinda Weaver on the Hot Copy Podcast recently, my aim was to wave a magic wand, cast a Lumos spell and shine some light on the wonderful world of tendering. Let me know what you think. E https://www.hotcopypodcast.com/e112-demystifying-tender-wr/
18.01.2022 WORDS FOR 2019 One of the things I love about a new year is reading everybodys focus words - while trying to decide what mine will be. This year I chose Consistency.... The last couple of years have been a bit all over the place. We moved states, twice. We moved houses in each state, twice. 2019 is the year to settle down, get off the roller coaster and get shit done. For some people, the word consistency is like a noose around their neck. It equates with being boring or unimaginative. But for me, consistency is about showing up every day and doing what needs to be done, even when you really dont want to. Its making that list and crossing things off even when Netflix, your bed or your BFF is calling. So this year, I choose to be consistent - with the gym, my deadlines, my goals. Not by cramming the night before, but by scheduling my little life out with time blocks and colours. Yes, it may be boring, but the results will be so worth it. Did you choose a word for 2019? If yes, care to share? And how you doing with it so far?
18.01.2022 WORDS OF WISDOM Its Friday night and the boys are happily killing things and each other on X-box. Handsome Husband is an hour way, having been away for work. Thoughts are turning to next week and how best to achieve all the things I need to get done. Ive met some incredibly intelligent women in my life. And each one I meet leaves a little part of themselves with me.... Tonight I sat and organised next weeks calendar, based on some hint, tip or words of wisdom theyve passed on. I look forward to sharing these with you to see if they cant help you too. But for now, heres what my calendar looks like. Once upon a time, I wouldnt have shared this as the inevitable comments about the colour-coding would have left me doubting myself. These days, I just roll with it. Needing structure is part of who I am and if it gets the job done, well bring it on I say.
17.01.2022 One of the things I love about Words That Fit is that even though I do super serious work, I'm not a super serious person. Case in point... When I was thinking about business names, it was a reverse-engineered process (no pun intended).... My husband suggested I just call it WTF? Copywriting, because that's all I seemed to mutter under my breath when editing tender submissions (and I have to admit, he's not lying. Turning technical engineering into a complying and responsive answer has its challenges and deserves a certain amount of muttering). But the idea stuck and so I literally found the Words That Fit. Pure brilliance if I do say so myself... And the great thing is that clients that work with me, know the story and they either get it and we become great friends...or they don't, and we don't, and that's ok. But I never tire of having people send me WTF memes and funnies. It's a great reminder that I'm building a brand that connects with an audience. I'd love to know what your 'thing' is? The one thing that people can't help but send you just because they associate it with you. This one is thanks to Teena Ryan
16.01.2022 Put your hand in the air, or just hit the like button, if youve been guilty of this... You wake up Monday morning determined to implement something new in your life, only to lose complete interest by Tuesday afternoon... Maybe its a personal choice - regular exercise, cleaner eating habits, drink more water.... Whatever the shiny new thing is thats got your tail-wagging this week, how are you going to keep the momentum up when the excitement wears off? Have you got an accountability buddy to give you a pep talk when you need it? Have you thought of a bloody good carrot to dangle in front of you to keep you motivated? Maybe its now a non-negotiable in your diary to keep you committed til death do you part. Whats it going to be, my friends? Me and social media posting? All three, all the way! Commit the time, tell a friend, reward the effort. Lets see if were still going by the end of the week

15.01.2022 Sometimes it would be easy to be a plumber, or a nurse, or a teacher. When someone asks you What do you do? theres a simple answer that everyone understands. But when you say youre a copywriter? Meh. Its a 50/50 toss whether youll get a nod of acknowledgement or just a blank stare? ... So, to clear up any confusion...heres what Im not. I dont have anything to do with trademarks. I dont check if somebodys work is 10% different. I dont send cease and desist letters to stop your image being used by another company on Instagram. I dont care if you photocopied more than a chapter of a book at the local library. And heres what Im really bloody good at: Getting you really clear on the customers you want to attract to your website, so you can speak their language and have them hooked from the first paragraph. Honing your message so when your customer finds you, youre helping them solve their problem and they think youre the bees knees. Keyword research thats not just a report printed from a program, but an in-depth look at the words you need and where best to use them. Coming up with smart, sassy taglines and product descriptions that make you stand out in a busy marketplace and keep you top of mind. Telling your story brilliantly for any awards you want to enter. As a copywriter, Im more than just a word nerd who likes to read things with a red pen. Im a strategist. An investigator. A thinker. A learner. And a creative. And I like to break the rules of grammar for dramatic effect. If you want to know more about how I can help your business, reach out below and lets have a chat. No hard sell. I promise.
15.01.2022 WORDS FROM THE HEART Oh Melbourne, how Ive missed you. So happy to be here for #CopyCon19. Time to meet in person, old friends, new friends, co-workers and colleagues. ... And what a pretty city to do it in. See more
15.01.2022 WORDS I WROTE So a lot of you will know how much I bloody love Kate Toon and everything she does for Australias copywriting community. Each year she puts on a conference that brings copywriters and content creators together and provides an opportunity to learn, network and collaborate.... So very privileged to be asked to write the Top 10 reasons you need to attend CopyCon19. If youve never heard of it and want to know more, just ask me. If youve been sitting on the fence about whether you should go, read on. If youve bought your ticket and coming for a great weekend in Melbourne, cant wait to see you there! xxx https://www.clevercopywritingschool.com/copycon19-copywri/
15.01.2022 INSPIRING WORDS The amazing Alannah Hill talking about overcoming adversity. Its not about courage, its about finding the light.
14.01.2022 When old friends pop cross the border and bring treats. One of the many things I miss about living in South Australia. #haighschocolate #copywritinglife #writingfuel
14.01.2022 WORDS TO RECONNECT One minute its May and Im sitting in Southbank waiting for CopyCon19 to start. The next thing, its September and Ive been so busy working in the business, that Ive forgotten to work on the business. Sound familiar?... Its a trap we all fall into at some point. Other things take priority and we just get into our groove, getting it done. Not that its been all quiet on the WTF front. Quite the opposite. Im having a great time writing great copy for great clients. And behind the scenes? Well, its been a time for growth and discovery and learning. Theres been some brainstorming and soul searching to decide where to position Words That Fit in the marketplace. Theres been a not-so-insignificant-challenge from someone I admire, to hurry up and finally get a website live. And theres been plenty of work on processes, practices and performance to offer a value for money service. Being a copywriter is one of the most rewarding and challenging things Ive ever done. Like most things in business, theres the eternal juggle to find time for it all. But I look forward to sharing more of how the groove is going. Stay tuned. E
13.01.2022 WORDS TO CHANT Only one more day of school holidays.... Only one more day of school holidays... Only one more day of school holidays...
13.01.2022 WORDS OF GRATITUDE This is Grace Grace is a miracle worker. She takes my crazy, less than detailed brief and turns it into a masterpiece. Todays brief was Just work your magic and make it right again. Heres a picture. That was it.... Grace is an expert at what she does. She listens carefully, remembers our previous conversations and knows what I want, even if I dont know the technical terms. And if she cant deliver what I think I want, she patiently explains why. And I listen, because she knows her stuff. Grace has been doing my hair for over 7 years. It takes time to build up a level of trust so your brief is only one line. When working with a new creative, be it copywriter, designer or hairdresser, be prepared to invest time and effort in the beginning. Bring photos or have examples of what you want. Be prepared for it not to be perfect on the first round. Be patient and most of all, listen to any advice they have to give, especially if its not your area of expertise. Thank you Grace. Ive missed you!
11.01.2022 LISTENING TO WORDS Its a wet and windy Saturday afternoon here in Perth, so were cranking through the domestic chores. Were getting ready for work routine to return to normal when school goes back on Tuesday. Hooray! Normally ironing is done in front of the tv, and cleaning done with music blaring, but today were listening to Hot Copy Podcast and getting our learning on.... Multi-tasking at its best. Interested to know everybody elses favourite podcast for business or learning.

07.01.2022 REFLECTIVE WORDS I try really hard to do all the right things. Fit in exercise, eat healthy, limit alcohol and get enough sleep.... Theres only one problem. Im a night owl. Now matter how hard I try, I do my best writing in the dead of the night, when the world is asleep and the house is quiet. The mind is calm and the words just flow so much better. Its not conducive with running a family though, so if someone can just drop in lots of coffee today, it would be greatly appreciated. 06.01.2022 See those letters. They mean a lot to me. And the industry I work in. It means I've achieved Foundation Certification with the Association of Proposal Management Professionals. Yep, it's a mouthful, I know. But it means I'm a bid writer. And a good one.... I'm not the chick that makes the document look pretty. I'm the person that makes sure you have a winning strategy that's clearly articulated throughout the document. I'm the one that takes your technical speak and makes it easy for the evaluators to understand, without losing any of its impact. And I keep you and the team on track so you're not pulling all-nighters and writing right up to the deadline, burning out with each bid. A big thank you to Nigel Dennis, CPP APMP Fellow for founding the ANZ Chapter, delivering the training and helping to lift the profile of proposal professionals in the region. #wordsthatfit #copywriter #contentthatmatters #perthcopywriter #wordsthatfitwords #wtfwords #wordsthatfitcopywriting #wtfcopywriting #tenderwriting #constructiontenders #perthtenderwriter
05.01.2022 Copywriters are a bit like icecream... We come in all different flavours. Which means we all like to work in different ways.... Some will only want to communicate via email (often cos we work from home and like to stay in our pjs). Some will only want to communicate via zoom (often cos we work from home and crave human interaction). Some will happily phone you in the afternoon but will have the phone switched off in the morning (often cos we need to wait until our coffees kicked in to put sentences together). However a copywriter likes to keep in contact with their clients, theres one thing we all have in common... We love a detailed brief! Were good, but were not mind readers. The more information you can give us about: You Your business Your audience Your target market Your competitors Your motivation the better we can write your words. We understand you might not know the answers to these questions - so tell us and well help WALK you through it. We know you might hate typing the answers - its too time-consuming, youve got big fingers, computers are new-fandangled machines. Let us know and well TALK you through it. Its not so much how we extract the information from your head, only that we get it in the first place. Because once we have the details, a good copywriter will always find the Words That Fit.
05.01.2022 When I ask people how they feel about tendering, they usually have one of two reactions: They loathe them with every fibre of their being, but recognise theyre a necessary evil, or The whole process scares the crap out of them and they wont go near them.... But competitive tendering doesnt have to be either of these. They can just be another tool in your chest for sourcing work. Each Tuesday, Ill be offering hints, tips, tools and suggestions to make the tendering process easier. If youve got a burning question now, pop it in the comments below. Or if you know somebody struggling with their tenders, share this post and get them to like the Words That Fit page. Im here to get you tender ready.
05.01.2022 WORDS OF WISDOM How is it that some people can get so much done in such a short amount of time? The most obvious answer is, of course, they make a list, work their way through it, dont get distracted.... But if thats all there is to it, shouldnt we all be crossing things off like crazy? Absolutely! So what are we missing? There seems to be a crucial step thats stopping us from getting through our To-Do list by the end of each day. And its simply being honest with how long things are really going to take, and how much time we have to do them. Lets face it... If youve got 17 things on your list. And 9 of those are going to take you an hour each. But youve only got 8 hours to get things done... Youve got no chance. Youre setting yourself up for failure. And who wants to do that? So try this the next time you write your To-Do list. Give an honest estimation of how long its going to take you to get each task done. Write it down. Then ask yourself, "Is it actually possible in the time I have available?" If its not, then you need to prioritise whats going to cause you grief if you dont get it done, or break up your big task into smaller ones to keep you moving forward. Dont let your To Do list derail your progress for the day. Use it to effectively plan your day, so you can stop the juggle.
05.01.2022 1 small fall 2 trips to the GP 3 days until school holidays start 4 weeks in a brace 5 pictures of his foot to find the fracture... 6 lots of tears cos we dont have crutches 7 times Ive told him to sit down 8 working hours lost so far 9 drinks needed 10 WTFs are we going to do on school holidays! 04.01.2022 Psst... So I’m doing a little something over on Clubhouse with the gorgeous Shannon Morrison. We’re combining our love of work with a love of all things pop culture.... Who knows where we’re going with it. Who knows what road the conversation will take. All we do know is that we do serious work for serious people and sometimes you just gotta bring the fun in to your day. So come along, join in the discussion and talk to us about what tv show has influenced your business or career.
03.01.2022 When it comes to creating content for your business, the thought can often cross your mind "Why bother? Its all been written before." And youre right. It may have. Several times over. Heaven knows theres about a gazillion articles on how to write the perfect blog, or home page.... But theres one thing that makes your writing different than all the others...Thats you. Your view, your story, your journey, all make the way you present your business to your customers, your secret ingredient - your special sauce. So dont make your content read like everybody elses. Make it read like you. Because the people it connects with are your people. And youre helping them. And thats the reason you wrote it in the first place.
02.01.2022 WORDS OF MOTIVATION Do you work from home, or sit at a desk all day? Want to move some more?... Copywriters sit at their desks all day, looking for inspiration. Some days were lucky to walk 1,000 steps. So each year, The Clever Copywriting Community band together and make a commitment to get ourselves moving and raise some money for a good cause at the same time. Steptember starts today. Im not asking you for money. But I am asking you to move. Get a team of your flat-butted buddies together and challenge each other to hit 10,000 steps a day. Loser at the end of the month buys dinner. What have you got to lose? https://www.steptember.org.au/
02.01.2022 WORDS AT WORK Had a great time helping the wonderful Liz Green launch Wise Matildas today. It fills my heart with joy watching other women go after their goals with such passion. Words That Fit is very much about collaboration, not competition and I love spending time with other copywriters. Lifes too short not to lift each other up!
02.01.2022 Hands up how many of you padded an assignment to meet the minimum word count? Wherever you could, you added extra words to get you within that 10% buffer, especially if you hadn't studied and weren't familiar with the subject matter. You would always split your contractions to get two words instead of one. ... You pushed the boundaries of decency with as many intelligent, descriptive, unique modifiers you could find. And at that particular point in time, you used seven words to start a sentence, when one would do. Well guess what? It's time to stop. It's time to stop thinking word count and start thinking readability. You'll see statistics that say a webpage needs 400 words to be effective and a blog post has to have over 1500 words to gain traction. And yes, statistically, these number can get you better results. But it's only effective if your content meets the needs of your reader and keeps them engaged. If you're just padding, you may as well have nothing on the page, because your reader isn't going to stick around to read it anyway. Be clear. Know your stuff. Don't waffle. Cos nobody got time for that. #wordsthatfit #copywriter #contentthatmatters #perthcopywriter #wordsthatfitwords #wtfwords #wordsthatfitcopywriting #wtfcopywriting

01.01.2022 WORDS TO LIVE BY All work and no play makes finding Words That Fit harder than usual. Time to down tools, step away from the keyboard and find inspiration and motivation with those that fill my soul cup. These two are most definitely on that list. Cheeky monkeys.
