24.01.2022 Since the state of emergency was declared in Victoria in March 2020, Working Heritage has negotiated rent relief for our lessees across the sixteen heritage properties in our care. As a self-funded not-for-profit, we have foregone crucial income to assist our tenants' survival though this unprecedented crisis. We are hopeful that Victoria’s collective effort to reduce infection rates will succeed and that recovery of community, cultural and business activity can soon commence, and ultimately succeed. We look forward to visiting all of our tenants again and to seeing their businesses recover and thrive. #workingheritage #rentrelief #covid19

21.01.2022 Besides providing mouth-watering catering to Working Heritage (pre-Covid), STREAT (Melbourne) is a social enterprise that provides opportunities for homeless and disadvantaged young people with life-skills, training and work experience within a hospitality environment. With STREAT’s doors closed during Stage 4 restrictions, their latest offering is the ‘Family Box of Goodness’; a 3-course dinner home-delivered on weekdays to suburbs within 7kms of Melbourne CBD. If you’d like to support STREAT so they can keep supporting disadvantaged young people, check out all the details at facebook.com/streatmelbourne/

19.01.2022 Digging the dirt at Jack’s Magazine! Infrastructure works by McCorkell Constructions are well underway inside the bluestone walls. This will help secure the future of the site so that it can be used by people, rather than being principally a storage facility for dangerous goods, as was its original use. #jacksmagazine #workingheritage #mccorkellconstructions

14.01.2022 Tuesday 3rd June is Mabo Day and the final day of National Reconciliation Week 2020. Eddie Mabo is the Torres Strait Islander who, for ten years, spearheaded recognition of his people’s ownership of Mer Island, rejecting the construct of ‘terra nullius’, the notion by which land was appropriated by the British government on the basis that it was ‘nobody’s land’. #maboday2020 #nrw2020

05.01.2022 Transformations: South Melbourne Temperance Hall 2015-2016 For this transformation, Working Heritage deliberately opted for a ‘light-touch’ in its approach to the building upgrade - something which the tenant supported. This approach allows the building to show its lifelines in all of the marks and inscriptions on the building fabric that have accumulated over its 150-plus years.... Alongside the essential conservation and upgrade works undertaken by Working Heritage, the tenant embarked upon a series of upgrades of their own, including the transformation of the main performance hall from a space that was dark and oppressive, to one that is light and uplifting. A studio apartment for visiting artists and performers helped round out the upgrades to the building, which now forms a hub for contemporary and experimental dance in South Melbourne. 05.01.2022 Transformations: Carlton Court House 2016-2017 In 2016-17 Working Heritage (in conjunction with Helen Lardner Conservation & Design and Eastwood Property), completed a package of construction works to improve and expand the theatre facilities for long-term tenant La Mama at the Gothic-style former court house in Carlton.... A new entry area with canopy now leads to a covered outdoor foyer with bar and ticketing. Staff and customer amenities were also upgraded so that now staff, actors and theatre-goers can continue to enjoy a much-loved Melbourne icon in greater comfort. #workingheritage #lamamatheatre #carltoncourthouse #hlcd #heritage #eastwoodproperty

03.01.2022 From royal gardens to a royal mint, Sean Godsell’s 2014 inaugural MPavilion transplanted itself from Queen Victoria Gardens to the former Royal Melbourne Mint at 280 William Street. Read about the first and five subsequent MPavilions, in just-released book, ‘MPavilion: Encounters with Design and Architecture’, published by Thames & Hudson. #royalmelbournemint #mpavilion #workingheritage #naomimilgromfoundation #seangodsellarchitects #thames&hudson

02.01.2022 Return of the southern entry gates to the former Royal Mint site. These magnificent gates had been stored at Jack’s Magazine in Maribyrnong for the term of the mint walls and car park works. They are now back where they belong and ready to welcome all who enter the site. Thanks to McCorkell Constructions for removing and then reinstalling the precious gates! #workingheritage #formerroyalmint #carparkentrygates #mccorkellconstructions
