25.01.2022 Lets celebrate the 2020 International Day of Worlds Indigenous Peoples. On Monday, 10 August, 9 am to 11 am EST a virtual celebratory event will take place and you can be part of it via the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues Facebook page. See for the link. AND lets congratulate the winners of Australias first National Indigenous Fashion Awards. Take a look at the vibrant collections and designs that have connected fashion communities to the worlds old...est living cultures. NIFAs mission is to recognise and celebrate the innovation, diversity and ethical practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and fashion designers. Perhaps your mission might be to create an annual award at your workplace that recognises and celebrates teams who have been innovative to embed a new process or project that promotes and encourages or educates others in relation to #diversity or #ethical practices. #CatherinesInsights #leadership #equality, #ethics #innovation #hr https://www.facebook.com/unpfii/ https://nifa.com.au/

23.01.2022 "As weve grown exponentially, Ive not been able to stay on top of everything and relied on others to do their jobs as they knew Id want them done. Clearly some didnt." See the full article regarding the recent events on the Ellen DeGeneres show. When is the time you, as a Senior Executive. will also be echoing these words? Without a continued, focused effort on knowing (not just assuming and trusting) how every manager in your reporting line is managing performance and ...behavioural standards, there WILL come a day when you will say these words too. A Senior Executive cannot walk beside every manager in the business. 23.01.2022 Many know me as a skilled, experienced & accredited mediator. But I do more than mediate. I understand how to constructively engage with conflict. I am a Conflict Engagement Practitioner Specialist (CEPS). How often do managers believe they are assisting in the resolution of conflict but theyre actually avoiding real engagement with the issues & the staff involved because theyre unconsciously driven by their own internal need to make things nice. Managers need to be clear... about what their skill set is & isnt & be proactive in promptly engaging specialist help. Managers arent conflict resolution specialists just as a conflict resolution specialist isnt an industry technical expert in your business. A smart manager will seek early appointment of a CEPS. A skilled, experienced & accredited mediator who is a CEPS can: 1 Create a psychologically safe space for constructive discussion; 2 Support those experiencing conflict to genuinely engage with the conflict & each other; & 3 Influence parties to engage with their own intra-personal conflict & the underlying drivers which have contributed to triggering & fueling the inter-personal conflict. If your organisation could use a CEPS, message me for a confidential discussion. https://workplaceconflictresolution.com.au/client-recommen/ #CatherinesInsights #mediation #leadership #HR

21.01.2022 I was recently interviewed by Betul Mengi from HR Daily on the topic Poor communication about employee departures risks workplace tension. In the interview I caution that disclosing the reasons for an employees departure can be a tricky path to navigate, and if done poorly, can result in tensions between managers and remaining staff and even carry legal risks. Given that some team members and other witnesses will know about performance or misconduct issues involving the re...levant employee, its important that team meetings are conducted with these workers to remind them to respect that individuals privacy. 20.01.2022 Eleven experiments by Harvard Business School PhD student Serena Hagerty and Assistant Professor Kate Fisher Barasz found we have an inherent bias to more harshly judge people in a lower socio-economic grouping compared with those on higher incomes. We tend to judge the former more negatively, labelling as less responsible, less thoughtful and more impulsive. If this is true, do people in the workplace in higher paid positions exhibit a similar bias? Are they making negativ...ely skewed judgements about the capabilities, decisions and achievements of those in lower paid positions? Now this is within your sphere of thought, you may notice it occurring. If you do, will you speak up? Lets address it across the business. Contact Workplace Harmony Solutions (inc Workplace Conflict Resolution) to invest in #leadership training. What do you think of the results of these experiments? Id love to hear your thoughts. #CatherinesInsights #hr #training

19.01.2022 Today is Stress Down Day, an initiative by Lifeline Australia to promote "happiness, encourage help-seeking and raise awareness of suicide prevention through raising funds for Lifelines crisis support services." A LinkedIn survey of 3,000 people in April 2019 found 50% of employees were stressed at work. An earlier study by Beyond Blue & TNS/Kantar found that untreated mental health conditions cost Australian workplaces approximately $10.9 billion per year. Fast forward to 2...020 and add the impact of the current COVID19 pandemic. It could be that many employees would benefit from a Stress Down day. Perhaps organise a casual group morning tea and pre-arrange for a few staff to share a moment of gratitude they experienced through the week. Come to work/virtual meeting wearing a funny hat, wig or stress down badge. Or you could send an email to your colleagues, explaining the purpose of this awareness raising day, giving some examples of stress down activities and noting your expression of gratitude for your work and/or colleagues (without singling anyone out). I encourage you to take #5minutes to consider your state of mental health and how you might quietly support/influence those around you to do the same. #CatherinesInsights #leadership #culture #hr

17.01.2022 Does this happen in your workplace? Do staff just look through each other and never really listen, creating or escalating #conflict in the workplace via poor communication. Stephen Covey summed it up well - "Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen to with the intent to reply." Poor communication contributes to a deterioration in professional relationships and can lead to some staff being accused of #bullying.... If staff in your organisation could benefit from improved communication skills & strategies then our training module - effective communication (including #listening) or our 1-1 coaching program would be very helpful. Please message me to share contact details so we can discuss options. #CatherinesInsights #leadership #hr

17.01.2022 Thank you Lisa Wilkinson from The Project and Anhs Brush with Fame for last nights episode on Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). A skillfully edited and insightful episode about determination and achievements. Lisa knew her first edition as editor of Cleo would see the end of the male centrefold! 16.01.2022 How do you make someones day? Sometimes it is just listening, really listening, to someone. I had the pleasure to speak with a prospective client last week. The conversation started as a standard call: I am experiencing a #culture of conflict. This conversation was different as the person I was speaking to wanted to improve themselves to support the business and saw opportunities for their own growth to help not accept the current behaviours of others. The person spoke at ...length about the situation and had originally enquired about training options. By not interrupting and listening to this person, I was able to offer a different solution, which we again spoke at length about. And then there as the aha moment, the big breath out and an understanding of how Workplace Harmony Solutions (inc Workplace Conflict Resolution) could support this person and the broader organisation. And unexpectedly, I received you made my day. Just by listening. I love making other peoples days and strive to help our valued clients improve workplace harmony because every individual, every team and every workplace matters. Message me to arrange a free and confidential discussion on how we might be able to partner you and your organisation. #CatherinesInsights #leadership #hr

16.01.2022 You cannot solve a problem from the same level of consciousness that created it" (Albert Einstein). Yet this is what we expect our staff to do when in conflict. Essentially we are setting them up to fail if we have not offered them effective support to shift their level of consciousness before entering into resolution discussions. Attempting self-management of conflict with a remotely located colleague adds yet another layer of difficulty.... Workplace Harmony Solutions (inc Workplace Conflict Resolution) understands what can trigger and perpetuate conflict and provide skilled coaching to prepare staff to detach from their entrenched views so they are ready to hear and understand someone elses perspective and experience success in the resolution meetings we mediate. Often systemic issues contribute to staff conflict so additional strategies beyond #mediation can be of benefit. This might be team and/or leadership training or 1-1 executive coaching. Are you really managing conflict for effective and sustainable outcomes? Contact us for a confidential discussion to help you map out the best next steps. #CatherinesInsights #leadership #conflictresolution #HR

16.01.2022 Many know me as a skilled, experienced and accredited mediator. But I do more than mediate. I understand how to constructively engage with conflict. I am a Conflict Engagement Practitioner Specialist (CEPS). I enjoy my role as the mediator and CEPS. In the mediation discussions I facilitate, it is not a surprise to learn that communication is often one of the underlying factors fuelling the conflict. Would sharing this quote and following its advice, help you and others to m...inimise the potential for conflict in the workplace? If I did something wrong, communicate. If I hurt your feelings, make me aware If I didnt listen well enough, tell me again in a way Ill understand. If Im insensitive to your needs or thoughts, tell me so I can consider them. But dont hold an attitude with me because you havent clearly expressed yourself. Im human, not a mind reader. Sylvester McNuitt With this shared understanding, staff should be easily able to identify with the need to have more effective communication skills and the requirement to promptly self manage any concerns they have with others. I might be out of a job after I have helped train staff in effective communication skills and complaints handling.but that has always been my mission - to help create workplace harmony. I would dearly love to achieve my mission. #CatherinesInsights #leadership #hr #communication

15.01.2022 Having my article, Failing to Notice the Generosity of Others recently published in Mediate.com (known as the worlds leading mediation website with over 5 million visitors annually) I was chuffed to receive a personal message from a reader (a commercial litigation lawyer and mediator) based in Philadelphia USA. Just read your blog post and it is a wonderful reminder about the importance of acknowledgement and reciprocity in human relationships. So easy to overlook, espec...ially in settings where trust is all but gone. It reminded me of some times when nurturing that communication took the parties to a whole new place so suddenly. Thanks so much for posting it! If you would like to receive a copy of this article, message me and I will gladly share with you. 14.01.2022 At Workplace Harmony Solutions (inc Workplace Conflict Resolution) were always looking to provide extra value to our clients & clients to be! Early in 2020 we launched a free resource page on our websites. Client feedback (after we introduced such resources during the workshops we were delivering) told us how helpful these tools were in practical situations. We decided (since our mission is to restore workplace #harmony) that these resources should be made available to eve...ryone. We have now added "I" statement structures for individuals & managers. The use of "I" statements gives direction for a professional conversation that respectfully explains how one has been impacted by the behaviour of the other. This suggested in the moment self-management tool enables a relatively short but detailed and unemotional intervention that should assist both parties to move forward with clarity. If you havent viewed the free resource page on our websites - whats stopping you! See the links for quick access. Dont just take our word about how helpful these tools are, our clients are saying: Above/Below the Line - "Thank you for the notepads, theyre great & I have already used them in a couple of coaching sessions with great impact." #CatherinesInsights #hr #culture #leadership https://workplaceconflictresolution.com.au/resources/ https://workplaceharmonysolutions.com.au/resources/

14.01.2022 Well done Lisa Alexander for calling out the behaviour of Richmond Football Club players with her comment on Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Offsiders that an AFL football player is a professional sportsperson and the behaviour witnessed by these sports men occurred in their workplace during a work activity. How is it in this day and age, such deplorable behaviour is accepted? How is that senior officials in the Club have overlooked this behaviour, for what it seems... has been many, many years? Do you conduct periodic update training regarding respectful workplace behaviours (bullying, harassment, discrimination, code of conduct, grievance procedures and the role of the bystander)? We all know that the standard you walk past is the standard you accept. What are you prepared to accept in your workplace? Have you settled for something less? We all need to do better & play our part in improving the level of professionalism & culture within our workplaces. #CatherinesInsights #leadership #hr #harassment

13.01.2022 Further to Brigette Hyacinth article https://thriveglobal.com//toxic-work-cultures-make-best-p/ I believe a complete organisation cultural change must be defined for the whole organisation, then transcended/disseminated to the team and individual worker level. 10.01.2022 Employees have proven themselves to be resilient & adaptable during these times. But maybe the circumstances have forced us into situations where we could observe these traits that already were present but never challenged with such a genuine & strong need. We now know our employees can be agile in the face of change. However, we have also learnt that employees still desire & seek purposeful meaning, engagement with & achievement from. task & social connection with their coll...eagues. Helping employees to find moments of self care, including demonstrating gratitude has also been extremely important. A number of our clients, understanding this principle, accepted our offer to post a set of gratitude pads (the Gift of 5 Minutes). We received this feedback from one client: At the online staff meeting this morning I gave a reminder to people about self care and other staff members responded about using the gift of 5 minutes and the positive messages it offers. This prompted a few others to say that they had taken the opportunity to reflect and share a positive thought with another person that day. If you would like to receive Workplace Harmony Solutions (inc Workplace Conflict Resolution) Gift of 5 Minutes, message me below. #CatherinesInsights #leadership #gratitude #hr

10.01.2022 Emotional Intelligence at Work. It is gratifying when an article I have written gets promoted or featured in a publication. Thanks to HR Daily for featuring my recent article in their HR Community forum. Its important for me to inform/educate/pass on my knowledge to those willing to read/listen/become involved with the work I do. Part of this is to write articles for various platforms to engage with my clients and clients to be!... Those who know me professionally would agree my passion is to restore workplace harmony as every individual, every team and every business matters. As such, the articles I write are considered so the audience can have those aha light bulb moments, nodding heads in agreement moments or even feel challenged to put forward something in opposition to my opinion. You can view and comment on this article right here on LinkedIn. See for my article. It would also be gratifying if, after reading the article, you might take a few moments to share what impact this article had on you. #CatherinesInsight #leadership #emotionalintelligence #mediation https://www.linkedin.com//roche-martin-emotional-intellig/

10.01.2022 We always appreciate and value working with our clients. Workplace Harmony Solutions (inc Workplace Conflict Resolution) is grateful for the loyal client base we have built up over more than ten years and for the referrals and recommendations they provide to others in their industry or organisation. We received this great feedback from a client on our Prevention of Bullying and Harassment training which is an all staff and additional managers/leaders session. "We engaged wi...th Workplace Conflict Resolution(WPCR) to conduct our professional development for all staff on bullying and harassment. The delivery of this training was excellent, keeping all the staff engaged and informed. We then had a session especially for the leadership team. The trainer had the knowledge and aligned this with our policy and procedures and gave examples of cases. We received positive feedback from staff with some stating they would have liked the session to be longer." If you would like to receive this important training for all staff and leaders in your organisation, please message me, email [email protected] or comment below. We look forward to welcoming you as one of our valued clients. #CatherinesInsights #hr #training #leadership

09.01.2022 I am a passionate and enthusiastic advocate for workplace #mediation and for organisations to resolve conflict using mediation for a positive solution. As I have said before, not all mediators are the same and if you want a successful outcome with lasting impact, not only for the parties involved but the organisation as a whole. I will always recommend the use of qualified mediators. That is why many years ago I obtained the National Mediation Accreditation System (NMAS) accr...editation and then furthered my qualifications and expertise through the Advanced and International accreditation. Through Resolution Institute I continue my professional development and support of the organisation. I am very pleased to advise one of my articles was published in last months Pulse newsletter. It was also published in an international newsletter - mediate.com As you will not have access to the newsletter and article, please comment below yes please if you would like to receive a copy of the article. 08.01.2022 This matter took 5 Fair Work Commission conferences and 1 hearing to resolve.https://www.fwc.gov.au//decisionssign/html/2020fwc2572.htm Fortunately the Respondent was represented by internal legal counsel. But think of the cost if the Respondent had been paying for legal representation from an external business? The Deputy President became the investigator and had to gather all the relevant information to come to a determination. If you are looking to minimize time and expe...nses responding to stop bullying applications (or unfair dismissal claims), consider engaging an independent workplace investigator so you can present a detailed and thorough report to the Commission at the beginning of the process. Wouldnt you prefer the support from Workplace Harmony Solutions (inc Workplace Conflict Resolution) knowing our investigation reports have been well received in FWC hearings? #Catherinesinsights, #HR #stopbullying #leadership LIKE 1

08.01.2022 We tend to avoid situations we find difficult. You may have a manager who you know does a great job in deflecting your questions. Have you stopped to think what the cost of this behaviour is to the business? When you look beyond this deflection you will find theyre creating for a type of short term comfort. This is an example of selfish decision making-made in the best interests of the manager & not the best interests of the business. They have made an unconscious decision t...o buy themselves time rather than face up to & cope with the unease of the psychological distress they create & attach to such situations. If that manager is not held to account for the negative impacts of their avoidance/procrastination they may never learn the lesson about short term pain for long term gain! If you believe you need support to garner strategies to hold staff to account OR you have managers who you know are not making timely or effective decisions then signing yourself & your managers into the Executive Laser Coaching program is a SMART move. A quick 15 min burst of laser focused discussion & support from an experienced Executive Coach will increase the productivity of everyone who will be impacted by the resulting decisions. 07.01.2022 Today is RUOK day. Yesterday I spoke at an #AHRI presentation where one of the central themes was employee well being. At Workplace Harmony Solutions (inc Workplace Conflict Resolution) we believe every day should be a RUOK day. Its NOT OK to ask R U OK if you really are not interested in receiving and listening to the answer.... If we want staff to feel comfortable to share with us then leaders need to: - ask this question in a genuine manner - make time for this discussion - listen with intent - have available support mechanisms to refer staff to - be clear about their role - they are not counsellors so they shouldnt act like they are trying to be one - role model their vulnerability as well as their strategies to develop resilience and well being. Its important leaders ask themselves and their peers this question too. It is VERY OK to access your workplace EAP service, contact Beyond Blue or Lifeline Australia. Making today and everyone day at your workplace R U OK day is of particular importance with the recent social media video on many platforms including TikTok. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and by the distress felt by family and friends as well as for others who may have viewed this video. #CatherinesInsights #leadership #compassion #HR #RUOK

07.01.2022 September 5 is International Day of Charity. While I am pleased Workplace Harmony Solutions (inc Workplace Conflict Resolution) takes social responsibility seriously & supports many charitable causes, this day can be a time to reflect on the ways we might choose to help others. Reflecting on the ways in which you would most like to receive help when experiencing a challenging time could give you insight into how you could choose to help others. Any action to help a charity wi...ll make a real contribution in supporting that charity help others. OR you may choose to directly help another person. There are many small, thoughtful ways to help someone out in a time of need. As leaders, I think it is imperative we are regularly checking in with our staff, otherwise you can miss the signals which identify their need at the time & then we miss the opportunity to be of the most value to our staff. Be broad minded, open & intuitive-someones needs may be to receive a smile, a listening ear or be served a hot coffee. Or the need may be assistance to complete a task or an extra 1/2 hour away from work to help a family member. Remember the smallest actions can have the biggest impact & you wont always know when something you do really makes someones day. #CatherinesInsights

07.01.2022 Thank you to Australian Institute of Company Directors, Kate Jenkins, Dr David Cooke and Diane Smith-Gander for the webinar Respect at Work - The Australian Human Rights Commission landmark report on workplace sexual harassment. Some key points I noted to share with you: 1:3 workers experience #sexualharassment in the workplace up from 1:5 in 2012; Sexual harassment happens in all workplaces;... It costs the Australian economy $3.8B annually; This is a systemic not isolated problem in our workplaces; We need to move from relying on Complainants to act to a positive action employer approach; & Leadership & culture development must be at the forefront of change rather than purely relying on policy training. With these statistics we cannot assume this behaviour is absent in our workplaces. We cannot afford to remain silent on this issue. Dr David Cooke provided two great quotes - Stand up & be champions and Inaction is granting permission. Is every manager in your workplace prepared to Step up, Stand up and Speak up? Dont just guess. Act. Contact me for more information about training options (behaviour, leadership, complaints handling), leadership coaching and cultural change initiatives. Would you like your managers to lead a Moving on Up: From Good to Great cultural change program? Lets talk about how this can be done. #CatherinesInsights #leadership #culture

06.01.2022 There has been a lot of media attention following Manly Sea Eagles player Addin Fonua-Blaks vent at the referees. His comments referred to referees as retards and spastics. Fonua-Black, sidelined for two weeks after pleading guilty to a contrary conduct charge, apologised and provided an excuse - which #HR would consider as hardly plausible. The professional sports field is a workplace. Professional athletes are employees and they are role models for our community. Th...ey know this and are trained to be able to execute their work to a high standard (both on and off the field). Yet some still choose to behave inappropriately. Your employees, some who will idolise their favourites sporting identities, see and hear this behaviour. What behaviour are they going to bring into the workplace? You may feel confident theyve been trained to know of the professional standards expected of them. But will they still choose to behave inappropriately? Are your managers ready to appropriately address such conduct or are they going to condone or ignore it? Congratulations to Special Olympics Australia for your public message to Manly. Will you issue a workplace statement similar to this to all your staff? Will you ensure this incident is discussed at every team meeting & explained with the orgs code of conduct? 05.01.2022 Did you know in Denmark, there is an initiative called The Human Library? But you dont borrow books, you borrow the time of a person to listen to their history for 30 minutes. Their purpose is to limit prejudice/bias. We can all have a label Unemployed, Single parent, Refugee. But by listening to peoples stories were given reasons to further/more deeply reflect on why we shouldnt judge a book by its cover. Stephen Fry, English actor & writer said We are not nouns..., we are verbs. Im not a thingan actor, a writerI am a person who does thingsI write, I act& I never know what I am going to do next. I think you can be imprisoned if you think of yourself as a noun. At Workplace Harmony Solutions (inc Workplace Conflict Resolution) we believe people limit others by perpetuating their own biases when using a noun. At work, lets stop referring to a person by using a label. Lets start recognising our colleagues as a human-with a history, a currency, with potential, showing #empathy whenever & via whatever mode we engage with them. Imagine the energy & vibrancy of our workplaces if we shifted focus from the static & limiting label or noun & focused on the verb - the action of being & doing AND the potential of being & doing more. #CatherinesInsights #leadership #hr https://humanlibrary.org/

04.01.2022 Manager: "I can say for sure that my day starts fine, but I am regularly pushed below that line because of other peoples behaviour, and its fine to say dont engage in it, but its what most of my job is, dealing with people!" Heard this before? The responsibility of every employee & an expectation placed on all managers is that we can behave & interact as professionals from above the line. Allowing others to bring you down below the line - a place where one reacts nega...tively to others rather than responds in a constructive manner demonstrates a lack of personal #responsibility & #accountability to remain professional & a lack of management skill to be able to influence & lead staff to lift above the line. We all have a role to play in developing the culture we want and a responsibility to role model above the line behaviours & call out & support others when they are acting in a manner driven by below the line behaviours. Blaming others doesnt resolve a situation. Its more likely to bring others below the line too - not a good feeling/outcome for anyone. An easy to use Above/Below the Line notepad & I statements explanation are available free from our website resource page. See the link https://workplaceconflictresolution.com.au/resources/ to access them. #CatherinesInsights #leadership #hr

02.01.2022 Do your managers know what ‘reasonable management action’ is? Don't be surprised if they: don't know; OR do know but fail to translate this in practice.... A number of senior managers for a major Australian employer didn't know when they rejected a workers comp claim for bullying by a supervisor. It’s alleged the supervisor: yelled & belittled a worker in a team meeting & didn’t allow the worker a right of reply; invited the worker to attend a meeting with 4 managers, without a support person; laughed at the worker's concerns; required the worker to do team leader duties without title/pay. QIR Commissioner Jacqueline Power noted that yelling & belittling staff, creating situations of power imbalance & not ensuring performance is aligned with roles were examples of unreasonable management action which were "major significant contributing factors" to the worker's injury. Ensure managers (& staff) receive training to understand what reasonable management action is/isn’t. Workplace Harmony Solutions (inc Workplace Conflict Resolution) tailor training to ensure the training objectives are delivered. Managers must know the Code of Conduct, how to demonstrate these values in action & have skills to be calm & constructive in all situations. #CatherinesInsights #hr https://archive.sclqld.org.au/qjudgment/2020/QIRC20-180.pdf
