22.01.2022 BACK IN THE BOOKSHOP: JB BLUNK (2020) The first long-awaited monograph to explore the entire oeuvre of the great American sculptor JB Blunk, with previously unseen examples of his work in stone, clay, painting and jewelry. The design beautifully combines archival images of Blunk's work in situ, and his studio, with color plates of newly photographed pieces. In an essay, Lucy R. Lippard discusses Blunk's reverence for ancient art and places, while Smithsonian Curator of Cer...amics Louise Allison Cort details Blunk's formative years in Japan. Glenn Adamson, Senior Scholar at the Yale Center for British Art, contributes an essay that explores the essence of Blunk himself along with his artwork. Blunk maintained a Midwestern sensibility of hard work and plainspokenness throughout his career, with little regard for the distinction between art, craft and design. Rather, he was guided by the materials with which he worked to create large sculptural pieces that seem to exude their own powerful energy unique to organic matter. Born in Kansas, James Blain Blunk (1926-2002) was a California-based sculptor who worked primarily with wood and clay. Following a period in Japan, where he met sculptor Isamu Noguchi and served apprenticeships with Japanese potter Kitaoji Rosanjin (18831959) and Bizen potter and Living National Treasure Kaneshige Toyo (18961967), Blunk being the first American to apprentice into the line of descent of that country's great unglazed stoneware ceramic tradition, Blunk went on to settle near the Marin County town of Inverness, California, where he built his own studio, and developed a lifelong friendship with the painter Gordon Onslow Ford (19122003), one of the last surviving members of the 1930s Paris surrealist group. In addition to woodwork and ceramics, Blunk also worked with jewelry, painting, furniture-building, bronze and stonework. Edited by Mariah Nielson and Abake. Designed by Abake. 21.01.2022 NEW IN THE BOOKSHOP: BERNARD SCHULTZE (1966) First edition Bernard Schultze exhibition catalogue published in 1966 to accompany the exhibition "Bernard Schultze" at the Städtisches Museum Schloß Morsbroich, Leverkusen. A beautiful catalogue printed on various paper stocks throughout and lavishly illustrated with an overview of German artist Bernard Schultze's many works in vivid colour and b/w, accompanied by texts from Rolf Wedewer, Peter W. Jansen and Bernard Schultze. ...Bernard Schultze (19152005) was a German abstract painter and integral figure of the Art Informel movement. He was notably the founder of the Quadriga collective, which included such artists as Otto Greis Karl Otto Götz, and Heinz Kreutz. Characterized by their gestural abstraction, Shultze’s works regularly feature brilliant, fluorescent colors morphing in and out of implied representation, forming fantastical landscapes, figures, and languages. Often highly textural, he is noted for his use of textile and sculptural relief throughout his painting practice. Sadly all of Schultze's early works, produced before 1945, were destroyed as a result of a 1945 air raid on Berlin. On 7 July 1955 he married painter Ursula Bluhm. The artist died in 2005 in Cologne, Germany at the age of 89, having continued painting until the end of his life. 21.01.2022 NEW IN THE BOOKSHOP: CY TWOMBLY - MAKING PAST PRESENT (2020) Luscious reproductions of more than 50 of Twombly's paintings, drawings and little-known sculptures, along with classical works of art, tell the story of an American abstractionist’s poetical dialogue with antiquity. Cy Twombly's first visit to Italy as a young man ignited a lifelong passion for classical culture that is everywhere present in his art. Painted canvases, works on paper and small-scale sculptures r...eveal the historical soul of Twombly's abstract compositions. Taking on myths and heroes as personal guides, he created a psychologically complex dialogue with the visual and literary art of antiquity. This sumptuously illustrated publication reproduces a carefully chosen selection of the artist's paintings, drawings and sculptures alongside works of classical antiquity, including a number from his personal collection. Illuminating essays by leading scholars and writers, including Anne Carson, Jennifer R. Gross, Brooke Holmes and Mary Jacobus, explore the often enigmatic engagement of Twombly's art with the world of the past. Edited with text by Christine Kondoleon, Kate Nesin. Text by Anne Carson, Jennifer R. Gross, Brooke Holmes, Mary Jacobus. Cy Twombly (1928-2011) was born in Lexington, Virginia, and lived and worked in New York in the early 1950s and at Black Mountain College in North Carolina. After traveling around North Africa, Spain and Italy, he settled in Rome, where he remained for the rest of his life. 17.01.2022 BACK IN THE BOOKSHOP: GAYLEN GERBER (1995) Wonderful catalogue, and first monograph on the work of Gaylen Gerber, published on the occasion of an exhibition of Gerber's work at The Renaissance Society in 1992, marking the culmination of a ten-year period in which Gerber persistently painted the same opaque, monochromatic still-life over and over, in a bold artistic assertion that seeing is not believing but simply perceiving. This catalogue documents the artist's installati...ons of these paintings at various international exhibitions, including Documenta 9 in 1992, and Robbin Lockett Gallery in Chicago in 1988. At the Society's exhibition, Gerber hung a single row of his paintings abutted end to end on a wall crossing the entire gallery space. Jan Avgiko's catalog essay, written in close tandem with Gerber, is a brilliant investigation of the role perceptual aesthetic theories play in the modernist and postmodernist monochrome. 14.01.2022 NEW IN THE BOOKSHOP: EDITION 69 - FRANTISEK HALAS, VITEZSLAV NEZVAL, JINDICH TYRSKÝ (2020) Launched in 1931 by Jindich tyrský, Edition 69 consisted of six volumes of erotic literature and illustration that followed the path marked out by Louis Aragons Irenes Cunt and Georges Batailles Story of the Eye. Including the first Czech translation of Marquis de Sades Justine and Pietro Aretino (both illustrated by Toyen), three volumes in the series were from Czech avant-ga...rde artists, and these were all illustrated by tyrský himself, who also contributed the text for the series' final volume. Brought together here in original English translations, Edition 69 comprises: Nezvals Sexual Nocturne; Halass erotic poetry collection Thyrsos; and tyrskýs Emilie Comes to Me in a Dream, including the original postscript from psychoanalyst and fellow Surrealist Bohuslav Brouk. For each, tyrský chose a different technique for the artwork, from pen and ink drawings to graphic collages to pornographic photomontages. Influenced by Max Ernsts collage-novels, André Massons illustrations, and the book as object, tyrskýs overall conception for the Edition 69 series rank it among the notable achievements of European Surrealism, representing as well a sustained attempt by the interwar Czech avant-garde to investigate the taboos of bourgeois culture. 13.01.2022 BACK IN THE BOOKSHOP: RON NAGLE - HANDSOME DRIFTER (2020) One of the most original artists working today, San Franciscobased Ron Nagle (born 1939)the enfant terrible of abstract expressionist ceramicshas made stunning, colourful, entirely unique small clay sculptures since the 1950s. In his sculpture, Nagle mixes allusions to modernism, middlebrow culture and the special pop sensibility of Northern California, making ceramic vessels no bigger than a few inches that dra...w on everything from Japanese tea ceremonies to Krazy Kat. Made with an overarching sense of playfulness and linguistic humor, a bodily and architectural sensibility, and Nagle’s keen attention to colour, these finely tuned, pitch-perfect sculptures condense sensory pleasure into perfect packages of experience and feeling. Their miniature scale makes these odd, elegant, sensual and sometimes abject little abstract sculptures endlessly charming models for the imagination. Lushly illustrated, Ron Nagle: Handsome Drifter is the most comprehensive and scholarly publication on the artist to date, with essays by curator Apsara DiQuinzio and Berlin-based art critic and theorist Jan Verwoert. A lively conversation about Nagle’s studio practice and unique process with curator and director Dan Byers of Harvard’s Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts rounds out this unmissable book. 13.01.2022 BACK IN THE BOOKSHOP: ROBERT MACPHERSON - 184 FROG POEMS 184 BOSS DROVERS (2001) Hardcover artist's book by the great Robert MacPherson (b. 1937, Brisbane, Queensland), published on the occasion of the major solo exhibition at the Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane, 2001. Profusely illustrated throughout with colour, landscape-orientated reproductions of MacPherson's classic, expansive series of drawings of drovers. All deliberately executed as if by the hand of a ten-year-o...ld, over a 20-year period Robert MacPherson made these in the guise of his alter ego, Robert Pene, a grade 4 student at St Josephs Convent, Nambour, Queensland. Robert Pene has an obsession: he endlessly catalogues boss drovers in portraits that vividly evoke the resilient, determined spirit of the rugged individuals responsible for moving thousands of livestock and teams of stockmen and cooks along the great pastoral stock routes of Australia, travelling over vast distances from station to market, or finding feed and water in times of drought. The drovers series is an ongoing theme having detained MacPherson throughout much of his career as an artist. Over the course of his 40-year career, Robert MacPherson has explored the philosophical propositions of what constitutes a work of art. He often incorporates familiar imagery, everyday materials and visual elements from daily life, honouring the beauty of the mundane. MacPhersons fascination with systems of objects and language is manifested through broad fields of knowledge, including art history and social history, biology and mythology. Based on Daveys eponymous 2019 film, I Confess unites three main sources in a chronicle of late 20th-century Quebec, shaped by themes of race, poverty, language and nationalism. Using American writer James Baldwins 1...962 novel Another Country as its point of departure, Daveys film also focuses on the life and work of Québécois revolutionary Pierre Vallières and Ottawa-based political philosopher Dalie Giroux. Published to accompany the exhibition Moyra Davey: The Faithful at the National Gallery of Canada, this deeply personal and highly political book seeks to examine an unresolved chapter of Québécois history from a uniquely interdisciplinary perspective that draws attention to contemporary issues of separatism, while reflecting the artist's understanding of photography and text as unique corollaries. 10.01.2022 BACK IN THE BOOKSHOP: EILEEN GRAY : DESIGNER AND ARCHITECT (2020) A smartly designed and beautifully illustrated look at the life and work of an elusive and influential designer and architect Eileen Gray (18781976) was a versatile designer and architect who navigated numerous literary and artistic circles over the course of her life. This handsome volume chronicles Grays career as a designer, architect, painter, and photographer. The books essays, featuring copious new... research, offer in-depth analysis of more than 50 individual designs and architectural projects, accompanied by both period and new photographs. Born in Ireland and educated in London, Gray proceeded to Paris where she opened a textile studio, studied the Japanese craft of lacquer that would become a primary technique in her design work, and owned and directed the influential gallery and store known as Jean Desert. Gray struggled for acceptance as a largely self-taught woman in male-dominated professions. Although she is now best known for her furniture, lighting, and carpets, she dedicated herself to many architectural and interior projects that were both personal and socially driven, including the Villa E 1027, the iconic modern house designed with Jean Badovici, as well as economical and demountable projects, such as the Camping Tent. 10.01.2022 NEW IN THE BOOKSHOP: TETSUMI KUDO - CULTIVATION (2020) The eerily prescient work of a near-forgotten Japanese artist, whose 1960s and ’70s sculptures anticipate contemporary ecological anxieties. Edited by Lærke Rydal Jørgensen and Tine Colstrup. Texts by Tetsumi Kudo and Joshua Mack. Contemplating Japanese artist Tetsumi Kudo’s (1935-90) work in the 21st century provokes a sense of the uncanny on multiple levels: grotesquely beautiful on their own, his abject sculptures ...seem to foretell today’s environmental concerns with their depictions of ecological decay. Born in Osaka, Kudo’s life was greatly impacted by the aftermath of the atomic bomb in 1945; this trauma compounded by the Vietnam War’s ever-present atmosphere of destruction led to a consistent focus on dystopia and decomposition in his work. Kudo’s fluorescent birdcages and blacklight terrariums are furnished with an assortment of sculptures and found objects: melted plastic flowers, colorful phallic chrysalises and dismembered resin body parts come together to convey a distinctly modern anxiety in regard to our ailing world. Kudo’s work does not intend to provide comfort in the midst of crisis; rather, his pieces urge viewers to reflect on how we may or may not continue to survive in a world that we ourselves have ruined through pollution and consumerism. As the artist’s work reaches a peak of topicality, this volume presents a focused selection of Kudo’s pieces from the 1960s and 1970s that demonstrate a postwar awareness of the atomic bomb’s effect on reproduction and the environment. 10.01.2022 NEW IN THE BOOKSHOP: INFERNO: VOLUME 1 : THE TRASH PROJECT by KEN HOLLINGS (2020) A journey deep into the heart of the trash experience: tales from the underground and exploitation movie scene in America during the 1960s. ... Trash has always served me wellover the years it has become the outer form and material expression of my dreams: of tomorrow, of life in space, of the blissful alienation from this world that I have always craved.from Inferno So begins the first part of this personal inquiry into the world of trash by writer and theorist Ken Hollings. Why do we find ourselves so attracted to the cheap and vulgar, the discarded, the misshapen and the abject? What do we really mean when we say that something is so bad its good, and what finally does it say about us? Part personal confession and part historical roadmap of tales from the underground and exploitation movie scene in America during the 1960s, Inferno takes the reader on a journey deep into the heart of the trash experience. With Inferno, Hollings offers a complex and intricate timeline of connections, coincidences, and resonances that have mostly gone unnoticed. He traces the transmission of the Purple Death, a deadly and exotic virus first depicted in an old episode of a Flash Gordon movie serial, through the films of Jack Smith, Andy Warhol, and Kenneth Anger and into the output of such exploitation pioneers as Ray Dennis Steckler, Hershel Gordon Lewis, and Russ Meyer. Hollings also turns his idiosyncratic gaze upon key aspects of teenage culture during the 1960s, including hot rods, Rat Fink, surfers, bikers, and beach parties, uncovering a secretive and hidden universe of masks, fake identities, and secret desires. Even Dante would think twice about taking this trip into Hell. Available via our website. #worldfoodbooks @strangeattractorpress @hollingsville See more

08.01.2022 BACK IN THE BOOKSHOP: HEIMO ZOBERNIG (1998) Catalogue published on the occasion of Heimo Zobernig's solo exhibition at Renaissance Society in 1996. Austrian Heimo Zobernig's work intervenes, rearranges, recontextualizes, and down-right makes fun of the architecture of museum/gallery spaces so as to demystify its illusory potential and reinscribe it with self-referentiality. Zobernig is among several significant contemporary artists such as Michael Asher, General Idea, and D...aniel Buren who have made it their mission to critique sites of modern art. In Zobernig's 1996 installation, the gallery walls from the Society's preceding exhibition were laid flat on the floor-a neat-handed figure/ground reversal turning support into sculpture. In another provocative turn, Zobernig brought the outside in to this altered gallery space via video - he had himself filmed cavorting around the Renaissance Society hallway naked in front of walls that were painted video back-drop blue; this image was then super-imposed on footage shot while driving around Chicago. This informative and engaging book, designed by Zobernig, serves as a valuable pictorial document, and an insightful critical analysis of this important work. Walker's essay speaks to the challenge Zobernig's art poses for art history and the implications of that challenge for the future of art. In addition, the catalog features a transcript of the panel discussion: Planned Obsolescence, in which a group of critics, curators and architectural historians gathered to discuss how Zobernig's practice differs from, or further informs, practices that have made an art out of calling for an end of art. The late 1960s in West Germany was a period of profound breakthroughs, upheavals and reversals. Communes were spreading, protests organised throughout the entire country, the desire to begin everything anew permeating the young. Out of this climate, a music scene exploded that would forever change the face of... western rock; at times anarchic, at others mystical, magickal, or utopian, it pushed rock beyond any known limits.Never a genre or a movement per se, Krautrock encompassed a very wild and diverse range of sounds, attitudes, and past musics, from free jazz to Karlheinz Stockhausen, from dada to Fluxus, from German Romanticism to the Mothers of Invention. The musicians operated outside any known categories, breaking new ground and turning their backs to both their country's past and the conventions of Anglo-American rock. Their vision fired the imaginations of generations of musicians after them: Cabaret Voltaire, Brian Eno, Nurse with Wound, PiL, DAF, Einsturzende Neubauten, to only name a few, have all acknowledged their deb to Krautrock's uncompromising ethics and innovative sounds. Profiling diverse key musical groups of the period, including Amon Düül (I & II), Can, Faust, Ash Ra Temple, Gila, Limbus, Walter Wegmüller, Cluster, Popol Vuh, Xhol, Between/Hamel, Guru Guru, Anima, Et Cetera/Wolfgang Dauner, Agitation Free, Harmonia, Embryo, Tangerine Dream, and many more, alongside the key producers (Plank, Dirks, Augustin, Kaiser) and records labels (Brain, Pilz, OHR, Kuckuck, etc.), and also a timeline of the period, this book quickly became a valuable resource. Profusely illustrated with with concert, studio and press photos, posters, record cover art... Texts by Archie Patterson, Michel Faber, Erik Davis, David Stubbs, David Keenan, Ken Hollings, Brian Morton, Steve Krakow, Mark Pilkington, Gavin Russom, Stephen Thrower, and Ann Shenton make this is an essential compendium to a music whose spirit and ideas still vibrate through contemporary culture today. 03.01.2022 BACK IN THE BOOKSHOP: JOS DE GRUYTER & HARALD THYS - OBJECTS AS FRIENDS (2013) "Objects as Friends" - the collaborative work of Belgian artists Jos de Gruyter & Harald Thys - consists of some 300 digital photographs of identical proportions depicting seemingly random, brightly lit assemblies of cheap, battered objects shot against a recurring gray background and standing or lying on a dust-stained floor. A tire, a stool, a rubber boot, a dismembered umbrella; many things ap...pear broken, picked up from the street, or bought in one of those one-euro shops whose garish interior lighting is so successfully duplicated in these bleak, underwhelming stilllives. The Belgian artists Jos de Gruyter (b. 1965) and Harald Thys (b. 1966) have collaborated for more than two decades on artworks in a variety of media, including film, photography, drawing, painting, and sculpture; they are known for thought-provoking works, often imbued with an antic sense of humor. Depression, autism, power games, psychosis, sexual tensions and idolatry are just a few of the interests that Jos De Gruyter & Harald Thys have cited as crucial to their dark repertoire. 01.01.2022 NEW IN THE BOOKAHOP: CREATIVE THEORIES OF (JUST ABOUT) EVERYTHING : A JOURNEY INTO ORIGINS AND IMAGINATIONS (2020) Creativity has been hailed as the driving force and most important skill of the twenty-first centurya power to be taught, understood and deployed on all levels of society. Debate concerning the origins and potential of creativity is mostly confined to the realms of the natural and social sciences, with insights ranging from neurology to theoretical physics to ...psychology and educational sciences. Here, using insights from these fields, and also delving into the ideas of Parmenides, Spinoza, Goethe, Emerson, Nietzsche, Freud, Benjamin, Bergson, Deleuze, Spivak, and many others, Jeroen Lutters argues that creativity should be explicitly enforced in education and society, to open up new perspectives. Creative Theories of (Just About) Everything explores and defines a possible world in which creativity is part of everything in nature. Knowing and using this creative source should be a formative force, not only in the arts and in education, but in rethinking our society at large.
