21.01.2022 Rhonda rented for most of her adult life and it was a constant battle. She and her then partner had terrible experiences living next to violent neighbours and then being forced to live way out of the city and far away from the services they needed in the few properties they could afford. When they split up it became impossible to make ends meet and she was paying more than 70% of her income on rent. She felt real panic about where she was going to live. When WPI offered her a...n affordable rental property, it was life changing. My rent is totally affordable which allows me to save a little bit for things I want to do. I have stability and a network. My mental health is better. I’ve made friends in the complex and wider community and I’ve regained my independence and confidence. I have done a short course to teach English to refugees and I feel really privileged to be able to give back. I have been able to develop my art and my love of drawing and painting and exhibited some works in a community art show. These things have given me worth. That’s the most amazing feeling ever. #affordablehousing #womenshousing #changingfutures #empoweringwomen #womenspropertyinitiatives

17.01.2022 The sun is shining and we are thrilled that the slab is down for our four-home development in Beaconsfield. These will be beautiful homes designed by Studio Bright that are part of our Older Women's Housing program. This innovative program will provide an opportunity for women over 55 with modest savings but not enough to buy a home of their own, to escape the private rental market and invest in secure and affordable housing. Older women are experiencing housing stress at r...ecord levels and this program can prevent women from reaching this point. Message us if you would like more information. Thanks to Gandel Philanthropy, Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation, Homes For Homes, Mercy Foundation and the Ian Potter Foundation for making this project a reality. #affordablehousing #olderwomenshousing #empoweringwomen #womenshousing #womenhelpingwomen

15.01.2022 The Walk Against Family Violence is a bit different this year. Although we can’t walk together around Melbourne’s CBD like in previous years, we can still show our support by getting out there today wearing something orange to raise awareness of family violence and violence against women in our communities. The Walk coincides with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It is terrifying that in Australia, on average, one woman per week is murdered by a former or current partner. Show your support for victim-survivors and help send a message across Victoria that family violence and violence against women is never okay. #WAFV2020 #whywewalk

10.01.2022 The pandemic has left many women struggling to keep a roof over their heads and these holidays will be extremely challenging. Will you make a donation this holiday season to help us provide vital housing as soon as possible for women and children at risk of homelessness? We can't do it without you. WPI provides homes for more than 230 women and children and will deliver 24 new homes in the next year. That’s 24 women and their families who will have a secure home to celebrat...e Christmas next year. Women like Judy, who when renting privately with her daughters, had to move five times in five years. Judy retired early from a job that she enjoyed due to a medical condition. Despite being a sole parent with a single income, she had always had a good job and didn’t ever expect to face a housing crisis. Renting month to month, repeatedly moving and changing schools left them all very anxious. As a single mother of three, Judy was often passed over in favour of two-parent families. At one time, when house hunting, she lodged 30 applications. None were successful. When Judy’s oldest daughters moved out, her youngest, Amanda, continued to live at home. She worked many hours a week to afford the basics most teenagers take for granted. Judy and Amanda moved into a WPI home three years ago. It was life-changing. I’d forgotten what it was like not to live in constant stress, not knowing where you’ll be in a year, or even a month’s time. We love our home. With affordable rent, Amanda doesn’t have to work all the time to make ends meet. She just graduated with distinction and has been accepted into a very prestigious post-graduate program! https://wpi.org.au/donate-now

10.01.2022 24% more Australian families will experience housing stress in 2021 due to the impact of the crisis. However, if the Federal Government invests $7.2 billion in social housing, it could make a serious dent in homelessness, turbocharge the post pandemic economy by $18.2 billion, and create 18,000 jobs per year over four years. These are the findings of an economic study by Equity Economics, commissioned by Everybody's Home. Housing stress is set to increase 32.4% in Victoria i...n 2021. A secure, stable home is among our basic needs. With decent housing, we can fulfil our dreams, raise a family, and connect with our community. Take it away and even the most resilient person’s world will shatter into a million pieces. It creates anxiety, depression, and family breakdown. It’s in everyone’s interest to prevent this. We need our Federal Government to do what's right and what makes economic sense. They must invest in social housing. #everybodyshome #buildsocialhousing #affordablehousing #covidhomelessness #endhomelessness #housingcrisis #womenspropertyinitiatives #communityhousing

08.01.2022 NAIDOC week is a time to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The theme this year Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples and their stories and culture should be embraced. We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land and pay respect to their Elders, past, present and emerging. We recognise that their sovereignty was never ceded. #naidocweek #naidoc2020 #alwayswasalwayswillbe
