25.01.2022 A great story has layers. It’s characters have depth. But the trick is to do this without spoon feeding your reader and overwriting your scenes. I really like how the LESS IS MORE advice is delivered here. What do you think?

24.01.2022 For anyone else who needs to hear the wisdom of this extraordinarily talented writer I have worked with, who has experienced both successes and disappointments thus far in her writing journey. After a good-long-utterly-confusing period of time, this is where we have arrived. It’s a strange, new, excellent place to be. We like it very much. We think we are literary, not commercial. We know, we can no longer pretend that anything we write is going to be anything short of ...a deep dive into goodness-knows-where to possibly (probably?) arrive at a slaughterhouse for naughty humans established on Mars in 3000 BC. We know we are fooling ourselves if we think we are for everybody and can write with any type of a market or audience in mind. That’s okay with us. We are at peace and very excited to get cracking on various weird and wonderful projects - regardless of whether our first novel ever sees the light/dark of cyberspace and/or bookshelves. We are good. We are us. We are freeeeee Anyone else with us? #Repost @kyliehoughwriter . #epiphany #writersofinstagram #writer #writingcommunity #publishing #writingjourney #writersofig #author #poetry #poetsofinstagram #poetrycommunity #literaryfiction #virginiawoolf See more

23.01.2022 Common Mistakes in Novel Writing It's impossible to improve as a writer without making a mistake or two or ten along the way. While this video has been pitched at new writers with the 11 common mistakes made, I think it’s beneficial for any novel writer - even just to serve as a reminder. #Repost @reedsy_hq... . . . #writingadvice #writingtips #novelwriting #pov #writersofinsta #writingcommunity #writinginspiration #backstory #storyideas See more

23.01.2022 Yes!! Go back to the last scene you were sure about and then make sure your character is driven by a concrete desire and is logically motivated before they face off against incoming opposition. . #Repost @reedsy_hq This writing tip has saved me time and time again. You might feel you're stuck on a certain scene, but the issue is probably a few scenes back! Trace back your steps and see if you might have taken the wrong path or missed a crucial detail a few scenes ago, to re-start to your story.

22.01.2022 My entire life, I have never loved any kind of shopping more than browsing through book stores. It is where I go when I am bored. When I am happy. When I am angry and when I am sad. There is no occasion or mood that is not improved with rows and rows of books. This pic is me at Kinokinuya, but my favourite book store is probably Dymocks on George Street in Sydney. I used to kill hours there when I was a teen and would go to work with my dad in the school holidays. He woul...d work and I would wander the harbour streets and the book stores. Everyone was a winner. So, to all the book stores I have loved before... and all those I will love in the future, thank you. . . . . #loveyourbookstore #loveyourbookshopday #loveyourbookshop #bookstagram #booklovers #writer #writerslife #writersofig #editor See more

21.01.2022 Rewriting is where strong stories and memorable characters and lines are made. An exciting idea does not make a book or a film. Lots and lots of work does. There are no short cuts. #Repost @outstanding.screenplays There are few writers whose work is so distinctive that as soon as you hear it spoken in a show or film, you know who wrote it. Aaron Sorkin is one such writer. His dialogue just crackles along leaving writers breathless and viewers grinning in satisfaction.... And his CV is stunning movies include Molly's Game, Steve Jobs, Moneyball, The Social Network, A Few Good Men and Charlie Wilsons War and TV is even more impressive with 155 episodes of The West Wing. Not only his work but also his writing process is very distinctive and unique. 21.01.2022 EXPOSITION BASICS Avoid where you can. Ask yourself, does my reader REALLY need to know this? Less is more. Weave it into your action and dialogue. Make the story and backstory evolve organically. It should feel natural how we find things out.... Avoid exposition in opening chapters. Resist your inclination to tell the reader how the story starts. Just START THE ACTION. Don’t deliver exposition in dialogue as an info dump, but do use it to show character motivation. Be brief and clear in what you want the reader to know. Raise questions in the reader’s mind they need to keep turning the page to get the answer to. Exposition can inform and add so much depth and emotion into a story, and layer in the theme if done well. Whereas exposition that is badly executed will kill your pace and reader engagement. On that note, let me repeat the rule to live by - LESS IS MORE. 21.01.2022 FYI to all the writers #Repost @thehangrywriter One of my favourite writing resources is the Hemingway Editor, which is free to use online (hemingwayapp.com). 18.01.2022 I am a fan of many writing books, including the often noted: STEPHEN KING ON WRITING BIRD BY BIRD, and BIG MAGIC ... But the writing craft book that took me from my career as a marketer and copywriter and reignited my love of fiction and film writing was Syd Field’s SCREENPLAY. I bought this book about 23 years ago - before I went on to study creative writing at UTS or The Writers Studio or with any number of mentors I have had - back when story writing was just a dream in my heart I did not dare voice. This book changed my life because it didn’t just teach me about telling stories, it set me free. Syd Field died years ago now, but this treasured paperback is proof that when we write, our influence lives on long after our physical death. 15.01.2022 My peace lily has flowered just in time for Day of the Dead!! It’s fitting since this Mexican holiday has held a special place in my heart ever since I was there for the local festivities in 2002. Some people might think having a party in a cemetery is odd, but I found it a whole hearted celebration of life and death and family, all lovingly served with a side of live music, a parade with artistic costumes, flowers, and yummy food and drink. There was even some d...ancing amongst the tombstones. This year, my beloved will be added to the altar for my dead for the first time. The loss of Jason is still a hard reality to swallow, but time and beautiful reminders like this blooming lily soften the sorrow a little. If I dare to dream, I feel it’s him saying hello from the other side. The thought gives me comfort. That in itself is enough. See more

14.01.2022 #Repost @keith_smith_writer At first glance, the phase in the image above may sound like a rebuke, but that’s not what it is. It’s a method that helps keep you on track with what’s truly most important to you. If there’s something you’ve been wanting to do for a long time, but somehow never seem to have the time to do it, that’s the time to use this technique.... I really want to (__________) but I don’t have time. Change that to: I really want to (__________) but it just isn’t a priority for me right now. When you say to yourself that second sentence, notice how it feels. How does it sit with you? Your answer to those questions will reveal a lot. I have used this quite a bit in the last two or three years and it’s made a significant difference. Do you really not have the time, or is it simply that it’s not a priority for you?

13.01.2022 The same is true for your story and character. Both need stress and high stakes to be their best. If you don’t pile on the pressure in your story and make your MC suffer - trigger their weaknesses and force them to make impossible choices - then they will stay a lump of coal. Drab and pointless and easily lost amongst the ink on the page. Your reader sticks with a story in the hope of finding that diamond. Give it to them. 06.01.2022 This applies equally to life and writing. It can be easy to see where we want to go in life, but not so clear on how do we get there? Whether we want to save for a house or run a marathon or write a book, the journey to success comes in many individual steps. One foot in front of the other. One dollar saved. One scene written. Inevitably on this journey, we will come to a point of uncertainty or exhaustion or just a really bad day. This is when our insecurity c...himes in and whispers all our failings, it looks for proof that our goal is ridiculous, WE are ridiculous and suddenly our end point seems VERY FAR AWAY. This is when your ONE STEP is more important than ever. It can be so tempting to question ourselves, give up, start a new project - a better one - or just procrastinate and do nothing until we feel sure. Days pass and SURE never comes as we get stuck overthinking and slowly lose confidence. I will put my hand up and say I am especially guilty of this. I over think everything!! It’s all a sure fire way to do nothing interesting or worthy with your life. The only answer is to stop and get present. Remember why you set the goal. Ask yourself if it still feels worthy. And if it does, COMMIT. Take the one step - just something small. Try doing something different to shake up your routine. Take the pressure off by lowering the bar of expectation. Just make sure you do SOMETHING every day towards your goal. Maybe you only have to run for 10 minutes today. Or do a 10 minute writing sprint. Or you will plan a scene or chapter but not write it. Set yourself up for success, not failure. The trick is to take action, and help your brain see the end goal again, and celebrate as you achieve the micro goals. Trick your psyche into seeing yourself as the winner you truly are. And make sure you have fun. Then it won’t matter if you reach the goal or not. Life is all about the journey. So, make it joyful. 06.01.2022 Your love interest, like all major characters in your book or screenplay, must serve the story and raise the stakes. They cannot be there for window dressing. Let’s help each other survive these crazy times instead of filling the overflowing pockets of Jeff Bezos. #Repost @authoravajanuary Reposting (from lots of pages I follow) This year has been a strange one, that’s for sure. Untold small businesses have folded while giants have become bigger. This Christmas let’s try and consider ways we can support other businesses. Is there a smaller site other than amazon you can purchase an ebook from? Can you even purchase direct from the authors website? Gift cards from an indie bookstore, indie movie theatres, locally owned restaurants... any other ideas? Put in the comments and let’s make plans for a better 2021!

04.01.2022 I am proud to say I have an essay published in a new Anthology about the Pandemic. It was the brain child of GP and writer, Johanna Skinner who joined together with editor, Jane Connolly to record ordinary Australian’s experiences with Covid 19 and the lockdowns of 2020 as a matter of public record. It is supported by @qldwriters and distributed by the Royal Historical Society of Queensland. My essay is in the Arts Section and is about how creativity was my emotion...al lifeline during the early months of this pandemic. The truth of that essay has continued for me beyond the NSW lockdown, but since this was written and submitted before Jason’s death, it does not talk about how much the Arts have helped me live through that. The Anthology is free and has a wide range of stories, including the experiences of children and front line workers. It is an emotional read and I encourage you to check it out. It can be found here. Just click through to the PDF and my essay is on page 162: https://queenslandhistory.org/stories-from-the-heart-3/ I would like to thank Jo and Jane from @pandemic.stories for selecting my little essay. 04.01.2022 Advice I have not seen before to deal with Writer’s Block. But I like it!! My go to’s are based on a similar theory - i.e. mixing up routines. Morning pages ... Give yourself permission to journal and write shit for as long as it takes. Just write every day with pen and paper and and not on your story. Telling yourself you CAN’t work on the book in your writing will eventually shake something loose. Writers date with a good book in your genre and a coffee shop. Take a laptop or pen and paper, and first hint of inspiration, start writing! Writing Sprints Two 10 minute sessions a day - again giving yourself permission to write crap on your project - as long as they are new words. Exercise. Walking the dog always works a treat with me. Sometimes I then speak into my phone and record notes while still outside. Does anyone else have any tips for writers block? #Repost @publishingpush . . . . . #write #writer #writers #writing #writingtips #author #authors #book #books #quote #quotes #authorquote #tips #create #creative #spilledink #writersofinstagram #authorsofinstagram #booksofinstagram #sciencefiction #fiction #read #reader #literature #literary #selfpublishing #selfpublished #writersblock #publishingpush

04.01.2022 Love this simple wisdom by @derrickmarcusthewriter Take this advice, combine it with WRITING SPRINTS - even minutes a day - and you will bust writers block and progress any project you are working on. Writing a book does not need to consume your life. It’s not just for people who are retired or kid free or on sabbatical. ANYONE can write a book in 10 minutes a day. As long as you put words down regularly, you are moving forward. And the added benefit is the more you ...commit, even in a small way, to writing, the better you feel about it and the more the words flow. Write what you think. Write minutes a day at least. And you’re on the way to being an Author. . .
