25.01.2022 POLITICAL UNITY: It is a rare day a letter like this turns up at the West Wimmera Advocate. Eight signatures, from two states, including Liberal, National and an Independent politician serving at State and Federal levels. They have come together to ask for a better cross border arrangement between SA and Vic. It is not just a return to the last tough restrictions, but a more sustainable approach balancing risk and need.

24.01.2022 SMALL STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION: South Australian Premier Steven Marshall has announced that starting Friday 28 August the Cross Border Community Permit will return with a 40km zone and 7 day testing. We don't yet know what activities will be allowed, including the category of 'daily life', but education and business was specifically mentioned. This is reliant on no community transmissions in the border zone. ... We will await further details.
24.01.2022 It will be a hot one today - remember to drink lots of water and check in on others - stay safe everyone :)

22.01.2022 7.10.20 CROSS BORDER UPDATE: Direction 16 has been released. The only change is increasing the bubble to 70kms. While it is relief for those near Nhill, Goroke and Harrow, for those already in the system it is 'business as usual'. 7 day tests remain, restricted activities remain. Another tough day for many who held hope for easing in the border bubble like NSW offer.
21.01.2022 Don't forget to vote in the Local Government elections. Mail in ballots only. Due Friday October 23 by 6pm. Don't risk a fine. You should have received your envelope.
21.01.2022 UPDATE: Multiple official SA POL sources confirm existing cross border passes remain valid but there will be no restrictions on travel, including which road you enter through from 1.12.20. If you don't have an ET number you need to get one after midnight see below link (into SA). 30.11.20 CROSSING THE BORDER ON 1 December: No, we do not yet know the rules for crossing the border tomorrow. We believe it will be a registration process, that must be completed after midnight.... It is likely you will need a permit to travel each way (into Sa, and Into Vic) We hope the Cross Border Permit continues, but we don't know. If it doesn't continue, the CBC must re-apply. If you cross prior to Midnight, the current rules apply If you cross after Midnight you must follow the new rules. The SA application process will close from 11.30pm-Midnight as it switches over. At this stage border patrols will remain. 20.01.2022 20.11.20: On the border. The West Wimmera Advocate has been onsite at the border this morning. Following a number of distressed phone calls from readers, we went to see what was in place. As expected, traffic was all bar non-existent. There were only early signs of organisations, no speed restrictions, no toilet for staff, just a SES tent, a light pole and some cones. They were awaiting shire staff to slash the 6ft grass. In 1hr only 3 trucks and a stock carrier. I saw peopl...e showing their existing SA Permits but didn't hear the conversation. Police on the ground kept saying, it is only 2 days. But that is not the feeling on the streets/farms. EVERYONE is very worried how the permit system will go, what purpose it has and how slow it will be to be approved. It is a high stress time of year for farmers, with lamb sales, harvest and coming on time to put rams out. South Aussies are already stuck at home. This is affecting Victorians more than anyone, including school students, business owners, staff and families. Yes, keep Victoria safe, but also keep Victorian Cross Border Communities operating. Covid Safe Plans, appropriate controls and a community minded attitude have got us this far. We hope to see more information from conversations with local businesses, families and maybe even newspaper editors on the ground. But, as we asked yesterday, please if you have any contacts, please lobby lobby lobby for a better outcome. It is White Ribbon Day today, and as a female living in a cross border community I am really struggling to report on that given the lack of local women's voices in planning this situation. I hate tokenism, and believe working together will make a better outcome than a bunch of people from Melbourne again telling us what to do. PS One cop said when they saw the sheep, "Are they merinos?". They were first cross ewe lambs from Naracoorte's sale yesterday. At least he knew they were sheep!
19.01.2022 FARMERS CROSSING THE BORDER: Advice is to take your rates notice and a farm map. If leased maybe take your last invoice too. Goodluck PS Vic numbers under 200 today.

15.01.2022 We are still awaiting contact from anyone looking to put their hat in the ring to nominate for West Wimmera Shire Council elections. We are happy to share your story. Phone 0422 591 998. Nominations are only open for a short period and we would love to see a big, diverse (gender, culture, age) field from across the shire, from a range of ages and employment backgrounds and with a whole range of skills to lead the region through these uncertain times. Goodluck to all.

11.01.2022 20.11.20 Testing. As per previous post. An asymptomatic testing station just west of Edenhope (by the Adult riding centre). Hopefully doesn't affect daily life. Please be cautious is using the highway.
10.01.2022 19.11.20 For those in SA or planning a trip to SA. This week there is very little you can do. Stay safe and get tested.
09.01.2022 After around 40mm of rain there is a bit of water flowing today. Sorry limited photos, but it was pretty wet and windy out there. Stay safe on the roads.
09.01.2022 31.12.20 Due to cases in Melbourne, Victorians will face new restrictions from 5pm tonight. Please be COVID safe this New Years. If you have symptoms, get tested, isolate and stay informed of the developing situation.

08.01.2022 21.11.20 : COVID TESTING STATION FOR TRUCKIES. PLEASE OBSERVE SPEED LIMITS. Just popped by the COVID TESTING station for truckies. They are not busy if you need a test for your cross border compliance. There will be there tomorrow as well. Great help for Vic TRUCKIES crossing the border.... We don't know how long they will be there but for anyone needing a COVID test they said no one will be denied. It is not mandatory to stop in.
07.01.2022 21.11.20: EDIT: CONFIRMED. CROSS BORDER PERMITS STILL VALID FOR BOTH DIRECTIONS. Restrictions on activities will BAS per relevant state rules whichever side of the border you are on. BREAKING CROSS BORDER PERMITS TO BE HONOURED IN VICTORIA.... Had heaps of trouble loading the info, apologies. See comments for details from the dhhs website this afternoon.
06.01.2022 20.11.20: Just outside Edenhope there is a lot of activity. According to a EDMH post it is a voluntary asymptomatic testing station for truck drivers from SA. We are hoping this does not interfere with our daily lives around Edenhope. We will update as we learn more.
06.01.2022 HOT OFF THE PRESS: The West Wimmera Advocate courier is almost back in Edenhope. This is our first edition printed by The Hamilton Spectator. Get your copy before it sells out. Thanks again to all that helped keep us going in these extremely difficult times. Fingers crossed there will be many more (editions, not problems) to come.
06.01.2022 Current info Friday 21 August
06.01.2022 12.1.21 permits were re-introduced last night for people entering Vic from any other state. Once again, we hope some common sense prevails but right now this includes cross border residents along the SA /Vic border (but not NSW/Vic border). As of today a permit is valid for 2 weeks. This is a seperate system to entering SA where the ET passes continue. If you are planning to leave the state for any destination it is ESSENTIAL you regularly check for local and Vic updates as ...this remains an evolving situation. SA checkpoints have returned, so have your ET number ready.
05.01.2022 BORDER NEWS: A busy day in Goroke with silo art underway and Janmac sale preparations in full swing. SA Premier Marshall has announced border bubble extension to 70kms to start soon which will include Goroke, providing relief to some cross border workers. Unfortunately even though fingers are crossed, it looks like the decision will come just 12 hours too late for Janmac stud. The Hausler family hope buyers show support in person or online with bids accepted via Elite ram sales an online platform with registration possible as even tomorrow morning online. A cracking day for a drive and some interviews out west.
05.01.2022 19.11.20 BREAKING NEWS - HARD BORDER BY VICTORIA TO SOUTH AUSTRLIA For 48hrs. PLEASE ALL CROSS BORDER RESIDENTS MAKE URGENT PREPARATIONS FOR A HARD BORDER WITH SOUTH AUSTRALIA. The attached media release indicates after a 48hour closure that a permit system will operate. It will be a very limited (purpose for crossing) permit arrangement. We will stand ready to support readers during this terrible time as we negotiate again the additional restrictions of living in a Cross Bor...der Community that is largely left to manage their own, support their own, as decisions are made in capital cities many hours from our reality. If you need mental health support during this time, please reach out to friends and family and your CBC allies, otherwise try Lifeline 13 11.14 or EDMH Social Worker or the Rural Outreacy Program. As covid fragments have been found in Portland, we urgently ask any people with symptoms to please get tested.
05.01.2022 BACK SWAMP 22.8.2020. After a good couple days of rain. Do you have photos of local wetlands filling to share and make us all feel better.
04.01.2022 WELL DONE WEST WIMMERA - 0 CASES: The latest Department of Health and Human Services statistics are out and as of today there are NO LONGER ANY ACTIVE CASES in our whole Shire! Despite any feedback you may be getting from over any border, we have done the hard work and continue to more than pull our own weight to keep our community safe. Hundreds of locals have had weekly asymptomatic tests to give us confidence that we have done all that was asked, and have currently a clea...n report card. You have stayed home, missed out on social gatherings, worn your masks, social distanced and flattened the curve to 0!!!!! We are still in Stage 3 lockdown, so please don't put our status in jeopardy. Keep doing what we do best. Most importantly, get tested and isolate if you feel unwell. However, today we think the most important thing our residents can do after such a shitty few weeks is to take a moment to SAY WELL DONE TO EVERYONE IN OUR SHIRE!!!!!!! Raise a glass, even if by yourself. Give your back a good pat and tell the children good people have done well today. It is going to be a rough 24hours for some and our hearts go out to all affected by the hard border closure. We will get through this together. Stay strong in the Far West of Victoria!! (Note also one less case in Horsham shire today too).
04.01.2022 Congratulations to Kaniva & District Progress Association on their virtual 'Meet the Candidates' session. Go online (see below) to learn more about the six candidates vying for the five positions available as West Wimmera Shire Councillors. There are profile pieces as well as a Q&A session.
03.01.2022 20.11.20 12.47pm Restrictions update.
02.01.2022 PRIMARY PRODUCERS: Let us know if you have issues crossing the border tomorrow. Thanks.
01.01.2022 FATHERS DAY: For many this is usually a day anticipated, and for some this year nothing has changed. With kids home made cards and gifts and a day catching up with dad's and granddads. For others it has never been easy, whether due to the passing of a dad or because dad wasn't so crash hot at parenting. But this year, many will find it tough, with confined spaces, limited free time and many dad visits away from home deemed 'non-essential'. The borders are all but closed and ...there is no excuse for a road trip and catch up. Thank goodness we live in an era with technology to phone or chat online. To hold children to the screen and share some (COVID safe) love. We are all crossing our fingers that the Premier has some good news in time for regional school holidays, but unfortunately this father's day will be 'one to remember'. If you are up for it, please share your 2020 Fathers Day snaps and/or stories for the paper as we can't pop by and say 'Hi' like we usually do. We would even welcome a poem or two - How was 2020 Fathers Day for you? For anyone not going so flash today, there is Lifeline 13 11 14 you can call.
