24.01.2022 Age of Pandora Chapter 59

24.01.2022 Starting in 2021 we will begin employing a proficiency award system in all squad levels. This system, combined with our Motivational Time Standards and Club Records Board, will provide all our athletes with both short and long term goals as they progress through the six levels of squad. At the heart of our proficiency awards is our long-term athlete development policy. Swimmers can start in our squad program from seven (7) years of age and will know how long they are expected... to be in each squad level, and what they need to do in order to graduate to the next level. As a swimmer progresses through each squad they will be taught new skills, refine existing ones and develop the necessary speed and endurance needed to compete in all events from 50m and 100m events, through to the 1500m Freestyle and open water events. If a swimmer aspires to become elite, our award system shows clearly what is needed for an athlete to become competent enough to compete at an elite level, and how long it will take to develop that competence. The earliest a swimmer can expect to compete at an elite level, provided they can achieve the proficiencies required, is between seventeen (17) and nineteen (19) years of age. At which point, if they began in our program as a seven-year-old, they will have had at least ten (10) years of training, competing, and winning proficiency awards under their belt. The average age of the Australian Olympic Team is twenty-one and a half years (21.5), our program and its award systems have been developed with this in mind. Proficiencies will be tested at training during test weeks, and swimmers will be awarded their proficiencies by collecting cards for each one they achieve. Once a swimmer collects 5 out of 6 proficiency cards in each award they will be rewarded with a proficiency certificate. If you follow the link below you will see some of the drafts of certificates and proficiency cards we will be awarded to swimmers each time they obtain a proficiency award. We are very excited to be unveiling this award system today. Together with our Motivational Time Standards, we believe we have developed a robust progression system that will reward athletes for longevity, hard work, and determination. Thank you to Emma Nix for her fantastic designs for the awards. https://peninsulahurricanes.teamapp.com/articles/5069053

16.01.2022 As part of our 5-year plan, we have developed Motivational Time Standards for each age-group to use each season. The Motivational Time Standards are a tool for both athletes and coaches to help set their season goals each year. The times are based on the FINA A & B Qualifying Standards from the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and the 2021 & 2022 World Short and Long Course Swimming Championships. Each age grouping has five-time standards, from Bronze level times, through to World-Cl...ass. Using the swimmer's past performances the coach and athlete can then establish a time-based goal for each of their events throughout the year. The fastest time a swimmer achieves in each event each season is awarded points. Bronze = 1 point, Silver = 2 points, Gold = 3 points, Diamond = 4 points, Platinum = 6 points, World-Class = 7 points. Swimmers can only score points once per event, per season. At the end of each swimming season (seasons run on the financial year calendar) the three swimmers in each age group, male and female, with the highest point score will be awarded medals at the Hurricanes end of season dinner & AGM. The overall highest scoring male and female swimmers will have their names inscribed on the Peninsula Hurricanes Mjolnir Perpetual Trophy as Club Champions.* *In the event that Champions tie for points, their fastest times for each event will be compared to each other and points will be awarded for each event ‘won’. https://peninsulahurricanes.teamapp.com//861375-2021-2025-

11.01.2022 Dear Hurricanes, Welcome back to training! It was fantastic to see everyone at the pool this morning. While training in a 17m pool has its difficulties, we are still training. And when working toward your goals, training consistency over time, is King.... I understand that training in a smaller pool seems counterproductive. Still, the length of time available to us in a squad environment is more significant than what is available to book in a session at a public swim centre for 45-50 minutes. If you can get to Mt Martha to train, you should. As you can see in the table below the work we can do at Mt Martha, even though it's a 17m pool, is significantly more than if you wait or swap sessions for 25m or 50m lap swimming. We do not want to start 2021 with a work disadvantage compared to our competition. I understand if Mt Martha is not logistically possible for you, where possible I will provide sessions for you to do at your local centre. Still, I want you to understand that training in a smaller pool does not lead to inadequate training. Doing less work than you could do does. Warmest Regards, Evan Russell Head Swim Coach
