23.01.2022 Struggling to find employment? Be a Hustler! Having worked in the talent management and recruitment space for around ten years plus, I have seen some interesting changes in the job market place. No longer is it simply good enough to be smart on paper and in person, you need to learn the art of a good hustle. Why? There is a hidden job market in Australia that accounts for over 80% of the jobs that simply do not get advertised. I consult with people from all occupations and... backgrounds and when I tell them to adopt this sort of mindset I can see the slight reluctance settle in. That dreaded word networking hits them like the gavel of high court judgeand I can almost see the person visibly flinch. Others that I consult with, the penny drops quickly and they adopt a determined and resilient attitude. Those individuals have had far less competition to deal with and sometimes a one or two stage interview at best. You see when a company has to advertise a role it’s a lot of heartache for HR; they are so busy dealing with employment issues, contracts, disciplinary actions and the last thing they want to do is have to advertise a role and trawl through hundreds of applications and go through a shortlisting process. That is why so many big businesses have a referral fee system in place so that employees can refer people who might be suitable instead! Its less risk in their eyes!
