25.01.2022 Series 24 Photo of the day No 12 An early photo, date unknown, is of adults and children on the Wynnum beach showing Jetty No 1, built in 1889, in the distance. In 1890 Council gave permission for Mr Gibbs to build a private bathing house at the foot of Mary (Berrima) Street down from his Waterloo Bay Hotel for a fee of 10 shillings a year. This could be that changing box partly shown to the L in this photo.
25.01.2022 Series 23 Photo of the day No 14 How the future has changed the boating community of this area by the building of the Manly Boat Harbour. This photo shows work in progress in 1960. The Harbour also welcomes visiting world-wide sailors.
23.01.2022 Series 28 Photo of the day No 9 Photo shows W Arthur in 1921 in the foreground in front of this large log at a mill operated by W Arthur & Sons where the railway parking lot is situated on the corner of Ronald and Andrew Streets Wynnum. It ran on a single steam engine, with shafts with big belts running off the drive shafts. In 1939 Albert Bunney and his sons purchased the mill when the mill was converted from steam to electric.
23.01.2022 Series 26 Photo of the day No 25 This is a 1930’s photo of The Country Women’s Association Home erected as a seaside home for its western members. It was named ‘The Helena Mylne’ Memorial Home in memory of Mrs Helena Mylne, a daughter of William Duckett White the original builder and owner of Lota House.
23.01.2022 Series 23 Photo of the day No 10 In 1924 the Centaur was built as a merchant vessel in Scotland. In 1939 she was placed under government control and converted to a hospital ship with a fully operating theatre, dental surgery and could carry 252 patients. On 14th May 1943 the ill- fated third and final journey of the Centaur was on route from Sydney to Cairns when she was sunk by a Japanese submarine south of Moreton Island. From the 332 people on board only 64 survived. The photo shows the vessel as being well marked as a hospital ship.
23.01.2022 Series 26 Photo of the day No 23 Through the efforts of Mr J Curtis and S Whiting land was given by ‘Duckett’ White (1876-1952) when he cut up the White estate in 1913. Public access was then linked by road from Wynnum Creek and Lota Creek. This 1915 photo shows Kathleen Anastatia Mylne with her son Jasper bathing on the sandy beach below their property which is now the entrance to the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Clubhouse.
22.01.2022 Series 24 Photo of the day No 7 Crowds came by horse & buggy, train and car to spend time at the Wynnum Beachfront. This photo c1915 show strolling on the No 2, jetty most probably to witness a sailing race in progress starting and finishing at Wynnum Central. The ladies and gentlemen show off their latest clothing and fine head gear for the protection from the sun. Gas lighting enabled night swimming at the tidal baths.
22.01.2022 Series 27 Photo of the day No 12 This 1921 photo taken in Charlotte Street looking towards the beach shows how the roads were graveled with grassy footpaths. Wynnum Centra (Jetty No 2) with tidal baths and the high façade of the Empire Theatre can be seen in the distance.
22.01.2022 Series 24 Photo of the day No 15 Photo was taken on Berrys Court in Carbethan Street Manly (exact date not recalled). Kingscliffe later named Moorland when owned by Harry Beitz is shown in the background. When compiling information for Recollections of Early Tennis in the District at the age of 90 years, the sharp memory of Ethel Fitzgeralds, nee Berry), recalled many names of fixture participants of the past who played on the many private courts.
22.01.2022 Series 28 photo of the day No 7 The original life sized statue of an Australian soldier was dedicated on 6th March 1921 at the park in Ferguson Street Manly. Now in 2020 at the age of 100 years plus Manly resident, Marie Hickman, witnessed the unpacking of this statue when it came out of its sawdust box. The Manly Centenary committee replaced the soldier due to vandalized c1982. Following an absence due to the same fate again the digger was replaced in 2007. This 2020 photo of the 2007 replaced statue shows it stands proudly in the Richard Russell Park.
21.01.2022 Series No 23 Photo of the day No 11 This is a photo of boats in the Wynnum Creek c1921. Chance 1 with Arthur Payne at the tiller, and towing a dinghy with fishing nets on board is heading towards the mouth of the creek. Chance 1 was built by Jim Crouch in 1912 for Charlie Payne. In the background is the newly completed Fox Street Bridge, so named after Henry George Fox the licensee of the Wynnum Hotel (1887-1896).
21.01.2022 Series 24 Photo of the day No 4 The opening and dedication of the Hon W.H. Barnes Memorial Fountain situated near the Wading Pool took place in 1933. The plaque reads His race well run, his work well done. Walter Barnes entered parliament in 1901 representing the Wynnum electorate for 30 years. Both he and his wife are remembered for their outstanding commitment to many organisations including the YMCA and RSPCA. It was through his efforts the duplication of the railway line took place
21.01.2022 Series 24 Photo of the day No 16 The home court for the Blackbirds team of 1930 was at Ernie Berrys court in Carbethon Street Manly.
20.01.2022 Series 24 Photo of the day No 14 Blue Spec is half submerged on the southern bank of Wynnum Creek downstream from Fox Street Bridge in 1907. Reported in the Queenslander Saturday 19 January 1907 two men drowned in an accident involving Blue Spec on 29 December 1906. People in this photo are showing their respects to the memory of these two people.
20.01.2022 Series 23 Photo of the day No 16 It is believed the lamington takes its name from either, Lord Lamington, Governor of Queensland from 1896 to 1901, or his wife, Lady Lamington. A newspaper accounted a Lamington Function at Laidley in 1896. Many lamington drives were a source of raising money for churches and schools in the Wynnum area. The lamington is sponge cake coated in a layer of chocolate sauce then rolled in desiccated coconut. Madge Lockie who made many lamingtons in her time added a beaten egg white to the chocolate coating. This prevents the cake becoming soggy.
20.01.2022 Series 26 Photo of the day No 15 Photo taken c1936 of that stately Cook Island Pine (Araucaria columallaris) tree in the grounds of Lota House, most probably planted together with the two bunya pines in the time of William Duckett White. Both trees are shown in a photo taken from the Manly Jetty just before 1963. So sad only one bunya pine is still in the reduced grounds of Lota House!
19.01.2022 Series 27 photo of the day No10 The history of Lytton Hill is closely associated with the establishment of a military facility. In 1877 William Francis Drummond Jervois and Colonel Peter Scratchley recommended that the Brisbane River be defended with the establishment of a fortification and redoubt at Lytton. Commanding lines of submarine torpedoes across the shipping channel were suggested.
19.01.2022 Series 25 Photo of the day No 3 This photo is of the corner general store run by Vic Bridges and family on the north-east corner of Kingsley Terrace and Picton Parade Wynnum, opposite St Kilda Private Hospital and diagonally opposite Dr Hooper when this photo oas taken. In the 1940s proprietors of this shop were Harry and Susanne Smithers. This undated photo was supplied by Ron Smithers, a son of Harry and Susanne Smithers.
19.01.2022 Series 26 Photo of the day No 18 In the care of their nurse at the left, Jasper is enjoying his ride in the rocking horse while Sheila is standing beside him. At the time of the 150th Anniversary of the building of Lota House and nearly 100 years of the White family residing in this heritage listed building a descendant, Patricia Gardner supplied this child study and many others. These photos bring a feeling of the times when Graham and Kathleen Mylne lived and raised their children over 45 years at Lota House. Thank you, Patricia Gardner
19.01.2022 Series 28 photo of the day No 5 Mayor Richard Russell who relinquished the name of ‘Russell Park’ after World War l to be known as ‘Memorial Park’ is shown in this Wynnum Town Council photo of 1920 .
19.01.2022 Series 26 Photo of the day No 24 Kathleen Mylne who signed her name as (KAM) was a talented artist and author. Words in a poem ‘The Path’ in the book by KAM and Mary Ethel Challands The way of the Golden Dawn the first verse aptly describes part of Lota House are; "Above the sea along the hill, My little path lies steep and still; Rough and stony, sliding round, it makes a way to higher ground; And o’er the tree-tops, far away, dark lies the islands in the Bay".
19.01.2022 Series 26 Photo of the day No 17 In 1913 this photo shows Graham Ernest Mylne (grandson of William and Jane grandson of William and Jane founders of Lota House) with the Mylne children Sheila and Jasper twelve months after the photo was taken of his wife Kathleen with Sheila and Jasper.

18.01.2022 Series 25 Photo of the day No 1 William and Ivy Newmann bought this shop at 59 Coolana Street Lota in 1945-55. It was situated beside the train station on the side of the tracks to the Lota State School. They owned the business till 1975/6. At the time the Herald was folded in a triangle and so grandchild Ian Whatley remembers throwing it like a Frisbee from the delivery truck (shown on the L). 17.01.2022 Series 26 Photo of the day No 19 Jasper in his sailor’s suit and his sister Sheila pose for this photo on the northern steps at Lota House in 1914. At this time protective blinds sheltered the verandah from the afternoon sun. This is another photo provided by Patricia Gardner
17.01.2022 Series 26 Photo of the day No 14 View looking south from within the verandah of Lota House c1936 shows that magnificent Cook Island Pine (Araucaria columallaris) tree captured in many photos of the Lota House collection. Unfortunately the fate of this tree did not survive past 1963.
17.01.2022 Series 26 Photo of the day No 21 A lovely study of Kathleen Ruth Mylne (Lop) in the gorgeous cane pram with Margaret Lillian (Peg) standing beside her sister. This is a c1923 photo taken on the stone verandah of Lota House. Graham Ernest Mylne and family occupied Lota House after ‘Duckett’ White in 1913. The ownership of Lota House stayed in the Mylne family till 1963 when the Anglican Church, through the Benefaction of Sir Edwin Marsden Tooth, acquired the property. 17.01.2022 Series 23 Photo of the day No 18 Born Maria Sherwood she was given a far more famous name of the British-Australian orchardist. The cultivated apple first introduced as a new fruit in Sydney markets was given her name Granny Smith in 1868. This apple holds it shape well when cooking and their tart flavour enhances the cooking in pies and many other recipes. Mable Miles was noted for her apple pies she made when raising money for St Peters Church Wynnum.

15.01.2022 Series 24 Photo of the day No 3 Barbara Lynchs article in the Wynnum Herald (date not recorded) reported Early morning walkers stumbled across a 1976 Leyland sedan just after 6oclock. It seems the submerged car in the Wynnum Wading Pool was stolen about 7pm the night before. After three hours the car was removed from the water and returned to the Camp Hill owner.
14.01.2022 Series 23 Photo of the day No 17 The Pavlova is named after the famed Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova who toured Australia and New Zealand in 1926. Australia and New Zealand both lay claim for the origin of this airy desert made of meringue shell that is topped with fruit and fresh cream. Many chefs across the world named their dishes after her from the Pavlova ice cream in America to a la Pavlova in France.
14.01.2022 Series 27 photo of the day No During World War ll Margaret Marr Home as shown in this undated photo was taken over by the RAAF for staff barracks for a Radar Station No 23. The actual Radar Station was on Lytton Hill. It is interesting to note that on 13 May 1943 this group plotted a surface vessel some 40 miles seaward of Moreton Island. The blip was characteristic of a surface submarine and history records that the hospital ship ‘Centaur’ was torpedoed off Moreton Island by a Japanese submarine at ten mins past four on the morning of 14 May.

14.01.2022 Series 23 Photo of the day No 20 The humble meat pie is Australians answer to the American hamburger, a staple food at many sporting events. When Ian Arthur researched The Meat Pie: Australias Own Fast Food his findings revealed the pie was developed as far back as the second century AD as a way to hold cooked meat. The meat pie hit Australian shores at the same time as the First Fleet. The meat pie served with mashed potato, mushy peas and gravy is a meal so loved by many an Australian.
13.01.2022 Series 24 Photo of the day No 19 Harry Beitz using Taffy the horse ploughed the soil before levelling the area to place cinders and ant-bed for the surface for his two courts called Moorlands in Gordon Parade. Moorlands team played fixtures using this court as its home court. Memory fails to name all the team but top row No 3 is Ailsa Bugslag, Front are Ron Jordan, Merv Beitz and Leo Hansen. Can anyone complete the names No 1 and 2 top row of this team?
13.01.2022 Series 25 Photo of the day No 5 In the 1920s Mrs Maguire conducted business from this store on the Manly and beach side corner of Kingsley Terrace and Gordon Parade. Today in 2020 this building is still there; but as it is boarded up customers are not serve from this corner store any more. These corner stores served the community well before the coming of the supermarkets. Some have been converted to residences.
13.01.2022 Series 25 Photo of the day No 6 This ornate kiosk with an eagle on top was at corner Fox and Wilde Streets. It attracted visitors to sip tea served by the Cloherty family while viewing the boats in Wynnum Creek. In its final days it served as Arnolds butchers shop before it was demolished in 1968. It is thought the Eagle found its way to the Early Street Pioneer Museum, but could not be found when Early Street Village was closed down. Exact date of this photo in the 1900s is unknown.
13.01.2022 Series 27 Photo of the day No 8 After 10 years of being confined to the hulk ‘Proserpine’ a reformatory for boys was established on Signal Hill, Lytton, under the supervision of Superintendent J. Wassell. He is seen here in an undated photo with his wife in his sulky with another lady beside. This reformatory was quite successful as an 1885 report found only 15 out of 235 inmates had ended up in prison. This Reformatory was closed in 1899.
12.01.2022 Series 24 Photo of the day No 13 In 1950 a Courier Mail cameraman captured these three boys gathering worms near Wynnum Central Jetty No 2. Two containers are there to hold the worms ready for a fishing trip or to throw a line from the jetty when the tide was high.
12.01.2022 Series 28 photo of the day No 6 The Wynnum Manly Historical Society Inc undertook to see the restoration and Enhancement of Memorial Avenue. The unveiling of plaques by President of the R.S.L., Bill Rieson took place on 24 April 1998. After 1998 some of the plaques were located and are stored at the Manly R.S.L. Hall. Names of fallen soldiers from all world wars were placed on an Oblique at this Peel Street entrance of Memorial Drive and also the WMHS. The Memorial Gates were restored and some pine trees replaced.
12.01.2022 Series 24 Photo of the day No 11 The Imperial closed its doors and was demolished in 1983. In 1986 these units were built on where the Imperial once stood on the Corner of Florence St and the Esplanade Wynnum with Majors café next door. The units overlook Pandanus Beach opened by Lord Mayor Sally Anne Atkinson on 26 September 1987.
11.01.2022 Series 23 Photo of the day No 12 c1938 Shirley Dubleen took this photo with her box brownie camera of their dinghy moored at the foot of Falcon Street. Dinghies were moored close to the beach ready to row to their bay boats moored in deeper water. This larger wooden dinghy would also be used to row in the inner bay especially around the double beacons to catch whiting and crabs in season. Whiting were plentiful in those days. Using the upside down nets one needed to be out by daybreak to obtain a good catch of crabs.

09.01.2022 Series 24 Photo of the day No 10 This is a 1921 photo Majors Café on the Wynnum Esplanade between Florence and Charlotte Streets. It was located just north of the Crown (later Imperial 1930) and south of the Empire, burnt down in 1922. Majors Café, provided refreshments for day visitors to the beach and also to patrons of the Imperial Theatre. This section was replaced by home units.
08.01.2022 Series 28 photo of the day No 4 This undated photo shows the few remaining pine trees in the Memorial Drive. The name Memorial Park came about after World War 1 (1914-1918) when an avenue of trees (with a plaque beside) were planted together with memorial gates in memory of our district’s fallen soldiers. Mayor Russell relinquished the name of ‘Russell Park’ to be known as ‘Memorial Park’. In 1942 the Wynnum High and Intermediate State School was built on a section of ‘Memorial Park’.

07.01.2022 Series 23 Photo of the day No 15 Because of their long lasting qualities Anzac biscuits were sent by wives and womens groups to soldiers abroad during World War 1. The ingredients of butter, rolled oats (not quick oats) sugar, flour, bicarbonate of soda, water and coconut were bound by golden syrup (not eggs) to make these delicious biscuits. It was the golden syrup that made the keeping qualities so lasting.
07.01.2022 Series 24 Photo of the day No 24 This shelter shed was situated near the Wading Pool opposite the Pelicans Nest fish shop. Over the years countless people sat in this shelter shed to eat their fish and chips placed in grease paper and wrapped in newspaper, bought from the Pelicans Nest. Under the cover of this shed how many mothers dried their children after a swim in the Wading Pool. One day its there and the next its gone! It would have been pulled down with the Wynnum Foreshore Redevelopment c2010.
07.01.2022 Series 23 Photo of the day No 19 In 1922 Vegemite was invented in Melbourne when chemist Cyril Callister was asked by Australian food manufacturer Fred Walker to create a product similar to British Marmite. The product Vegemite, rich in Vitamin B is popular as a breakfast and sandwich spread. The Australian Army supplied Vegemite to its troops during World War ll. In 1954 and even later the toe-tapping jingle Happy little Vegemites could be heard on radio by a trio of young singers.

02.01.2022 Series 27 Photo of the day No 11 This is a 1921 photo. A large fly wheel on the steam roller drove a long belt attached to the crushing plant to provide stone raised in little buckets before being dropped between the crushers to provide gravel for road-making. This plant was at the summit of Tingal Hill on the site of the old Lytton School. Cars were replacing the horse-drawn vehicles, so there was a demand for better streets and roads.
02.01.2022 Series of the week No 13 Photo taken by Ron Olsen of boats anchored in the Manly Harbour c2017. Work started on the building of the man-made Manly Harbour in 1958. What a difference to the times when boating people anchored their dinghies close to the shore to enable access to their motor launch anchored further out in deeper water.
02.01.2022 Series 25 Photo of the day No 4 Jack Fairweather (the man directly behind the sulky) first settled in Manly during the 1920s. His first store was in Stratton Terrace upon the area occupied by the liquor barn belonging to the Manly Hotel. In the depression years he took over a vacant shop in Cambridge Parade. Jacks charitable presence helped people, maintaining free delivery throughout the war years while ensuring quality service. In 1946 the store was extended to include a hardware department, a hairdressing salon and a dentist. Advertised in the Back to Wynnum 1933 book as 'Manlys Leading Grocer, Our endeavour is to be one by giving Best Service and Quality and Keenest Prices'.
