12.01.2022 Daphna Cohen interview with Yair Dalal before arriving to Australia : Shalom to Yair Dalal and welcome to Australia. You are arriving in April to participate in Jordi Savals concerts. Is this your first visit to Australia ?... - Shalom, This is not my first visit, I was twice in Adelaide at Womad festival as well as in Sydney and Canberra. How did you meet Jordi Saval ? - Jordi Saval came to Israel 16 years ago to perform. He heard about me and asked me to play with him. Since that time we have done a lot together and cooperated in many projects. Tell us a bit on the project Jerusalem, the project that brings Jordi saval to Melbourne and your part in it. - Jerusalem project is an impressive musical project that tells the history of Jerusalem through the music of the three main religions living there. It contains many chapters throughout time : wars, conquest, exile, grief and salvation. My contribution to this project was to help building the Jewish aspect music wise and to connect it to the muslim musicians who live in Israel as well. You have 2 more performances scheduled during your visit to Melbourne. One of them at the Sasson Yehuda Sepharadi Schule, where it was very important for you to perform. Why ? - This concert is very significant and exciting. It is important for me to perform in a synagogue that part of its community origins from Iraq, the place my parents came from. It is sort of closing a circle for me. Also, I always do my utmost to contact the Jewish community in every place I arrive all over the world. You are a part of the branch in music called world music. Can you explain what actually is world music ? - Tough question. the truth is that sometimes it is a bit problematic to describe or define. I guess you can say that it is a group of musicians combining different sorts of ethnic and modern music from various places and cultures. Please tell us a little bit about your origins and your way to reserve tradition and inheritance - My family came to Israel from Iraq. I grew up in Israel and loved music from a very early age. I studied playing the violin but later on realized that the Babylonian Jewish music might perish. This motivated me to study it deeply, to play it and to expose it to the broader audience. I also create new music based on this tradition and combine it into the new music I compose. I teach a lot musical education and try my best to forward the knowledge to the next generations. Before we go, would you like to send a message to the audience expecting you in Melbourne ? - I hope to see you at the concert, meet you personally and get excited with you. Wishing you Happy Purim and shalom. Thank you for this interview, have a safe flight and looking forward to see you soon.

06.01.2022 Yair Dalal & Lenka Lichtenberg LULLABIES FROM EXILE NEW CD Awakening the Diaspora of the lullaby Lullabies from Exile is collaboration between two dear friends, Yair Dalal and Lenka Lichtenberg that explores an astonishing range of emotional, cultural and historical dynamics and traditions.... At its heart, Lullabies is comprised of eight two-song medleys and two stand-alone songs many of which were among the very first songs these two world-renowned artists of the Jewish diaspora heard as babies. They were sung by extraordinary mothers who endured remarkable journeys simply to be able to give birth to their children; Baghdad-born emigrated to Israel Smirch Dalal, and Prague-born Holocaust survivor Renee Friesova. For the Jewish nation that has known much suffering, lullabies are often yearnings for better times. They are confessions of sadness and maternal frustration, disillusionment and broken dreams, often sung by mothers in states of complete exhaustion yet always with great love for their children. The Lullabies From Exile collaboration was born before a joint concert in Kosice, Slovakia, when Lichtenberg played the albums opening lullaby, Yankele for Dalal to see if he could accompany her on oud. Soon, Dalal was playing an Iraqi lullaby from his childhood that connected to Lichtenbergs Yiddish song with a remarkably natural intuition. And the idea of uniting the worlds oldest continuous Jewish tradition of Babylonia together with Ashkenazi European Jewry -- two branches of the same tree that grew in separate directions, from the deserts of the Middle East to the frozen north of Europe, for more than two millennia -- was born. While most of these lullabies are in Judeo-Iraqi Arabic and Yiddish, the concept grew to include songs in Czech, Slovak and Hebrew in order to reflect the artists personal histories; as well as English to acknowledge the experience of the English-speaking diaspora. The journey of selecting traditional lullabies, recording them on three continents over two years, and weaving them into the medleys and capturing their essence on recording has been long and at times challenging; yet always guided by love for the music and an enduring friendship. And now, we invite you to allow yourself to be both soothed and awakened by Lullabies from Exile. Yair Dalal & Lenka Lichtenbergs Lullabies from Exile is homage to the songs that have comforted two branches of the Jewish diaspora through centuries of displacement and suffering.
