24.01.2022 Introducing the first teacher for our Summer Intensive. MICHAEL SMITH, teaching on 25th Jan. Check out Michael’s bio below! Full Week or Single Day passes available. Book through http://www.yellowwheel.com.au ... Michael Smith is an artist working within contemporary dance, dance-theatre, film and installation. Delving into themes across gender, fantasy, queerness, ‘role playing’ and paradise, Michael’s work questions the traditional roles of audience and space - traversing active participation and audience as allies. Michael is currently an artist with The Farm, a dance-theatre company based on Kombumerri and Yugambeh land. He has also worked for companies and organisations such as STRUT Dance (DecaDance, Ohad Naharin), QAGOMA (William Forsythe's 'Fact of Matter', Nick Caves 'HEARD') and Opera Australia (King Roger). Michael's choreographic work has been shown across Brisbane Festival, Dance Massive, Ars Electronica (Austria), TanzZiet (Berlin), AGITART Figueres Festival MOU (Spain), Japan Media Arts Festival, STRUT Dance, Metro Arts, Sunshine Coast Arts Prize and South Bank Corporations 'Flowstate'. In support of Michael’s emerging choreographic practice, he is currently a recipient of the Brisbane City Council Lord Mayors Fellowship (2019-2020), enabling opportunities across Europe and Israel. https://michaelsmithprojects.com/

23.01.2022 New Merch Yellow felt appropriate.

23.01.2022 We’re still here Melbourne. Waiting... and taking the biggest lesson in patience and letting go that a lot of us would have experienced in our lifetimes. Cheesy words and speeches aside, keep looking out for each other and try to find peaceful moments in this fluidity. Also, as much as it’s becoming a cliche to say, remember that we’re separated but in this together. ‘Simulcast’: A solo for many. A collaboration between @chunkymove @tasdance and @_yellowwheel_ Photo by Pippa Samaya.

23.01.2022 Asrin joined us this year and is currently YW’s youngest member. She’s shown her obvious love of Ghibli through wearing the same shirt to nearly every rehearsal so far. Who can blame her though? Describing Yellow Wheel is like describing a home. The people there are so nice and friendly and the whole company has this comfortable non judgmental atmosphere. Life builds up all this unwanted tension and anxiety, but even just walking into the studios and seeing everyone, s...oftens the tension and eases the anxiety. Yellow Wheel and the people in it have become my safe haven and second home. I’ve learnt so much more about contemporary and how my body moves from not only Kyall, but the other members as well. I’m looking forward to what other things I’ll experience and learn in Yellow Wheel in the future! #MelbourneDance #AustralianDance #Ghibli See more

Lilian’s work has been presented both within Australia and internationally. Independent choreographer, educator, performer, writer, provocateur and cultural entrepreneur. Their choreographic work has been presented around the world. They have been continuously developing a powerful artistic voice which transcend boarders and truly captivates the audience. The Danish author and critic Michael Svennevig wrote on CATHARSES by Aloni: It felt as if I was seeing contemporary dance for the first time, as if it were a brand new fresh language Aloni strongly believes in collaborative creation and making methodologies as means of stimulation and a necessity for the advancing of current practices. They see art as a catalyst of social and cultural narratives as well as an invaluable apparatus for the evolvement of our communities. Both in their artistic practice and the ways in which they initiate and manage international projects, Aloni purposefully promotes democratic, horizontal and equal practices in opposition to the current regimes and governance which threaten our liberty and safety. As a performer for two decades, Aloni created and performed a vast repertoire of globally acclaimed choreographers such as Sasha Waltz, Mats Ek, Wim Vadekaybus and Club Guy And Roni to name a few. Currently, Aloni is the Artistic Director and Co-Founder of ilDance, an independent contemporary dance organisation based in Gothenburg, Sweden and the architect and international project manager of International Contemporary Dance Collective (iCoDaCo) which is co-founded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.

16.01.2022 For the past two months Yellow Wheel has been collaborating with UK based youth company Right2Dance, and Scottish Artist Jemma Stein, in creating a video work to highlight how the arts can keep us connected despite the past year. Right now, Anna Kenrick, the Artistic Director of YDance (Scotland) is leading our third and final Zoom session to create material for the film. As Australia reopens and begins to find a sense of Covid Normal (whatever that means), it’s important... for us to remember and continue practicing the possibilities and potential for levels of accessibility and connection that the shift online has provided over the past year. This project has been generously supported by CREATE Paisley in the UK.

13.01.2022 Over the years Yellow Wheel has had hundreds of dancers come through the company, and been engaged with a large number of public community programs. One of our foundational principles is that dance is for everyone, and we encourage our dancers to be the best versions of themselves and take whatever knowledge we can offer them into whatever facet of their life they end up. We have had alumni enter into a number of different industries and are proud of each and every one, regardless of where their interests took them. We are proud to be a not for profit organization that is here for the benefit of the community, and if you are a fan of our work, we would love for you to come along to our June season to be announced in the next week. Save the dates: 10th-13th June.

12.01.2022 Due to COVID restrictions, we unfortunately have to announce that Michael Smith and Ashleigh Musk will no longer be able to make it down to Victoria for our Summer Intensive... Thursday we have a pair of teachers, Wendy Smith and Martin Hughes coming in to share a rich knowledge of soma...tic practices and how to use this to find awareness and efficiency in the body. Both Wendy and Martin taught our current Artistic Director at university, and have taught and influenced many practicing professionals in the industry today. If you had already purchased a Full Week pass, or a Single Day pass for Monday or Thursday, we will email you soon to see if you would like to keep your ticket for those particular days. 11.01.2022 Sometimes you just don’t want to dance over Zoom... and that’s okay. So for us still in lockdown in Melbourne, we decided to have a drawing/viewing session instead. Here are some Yellow Wheelers drawings, either stream of consciousness drawings, or responses to one of our 2014 Dance works ‘Air Reef’ by Amber McCartney.

10.01.2022 In 2018 we collaborated with the National Youth Dance Company of Scotland to create Neo Digital Native. NEO began with the pairing of dancers from Australia and Scotland, exchanging imagery of their lives over social media. Using these tools our dancers have stayed in touch. The wonderful Jemma Stein of the NYDCS recently orchestrated a worldwide collaboration dance film, centred around the theme of isolation, featuring many of our Yellow Wheel dancers and alumni. Here is the... bio and link to PROJECT C: -------------------------------- During this period of isolation I had a desire to connect my friends and fellow dancers, many of whom have not met before to create, Project C. Project C brought together thirty three dance artists, to create a choreographed work as though we were together in space. Since March the dancers and I have been collaborating to produce this final film. Whether the dancers chose to respond in movement, spoken word, drawings or written work to posed tasks, they involved themselves however they saw fit. Sharing their art with one another and finding a creative focus through isolated states. - Jemma Stein Including our dancers: Rachel Owens Pat O'Luanaigh Rachel Mackie Cora Hughes Maddi Cushion Yvonne Huang and Tenae Smith Northern School of Contemporary Dance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0KVY01cUjQ&t=4s

08.01.2022 Plans are delayed or cancelled, and we’re currently separated. There is a growing animosity and tension in the air around us, but it’s important to remember that the space we are currently taking between each other is one massive act of love and solidarity, for each other, for strangers, for families and those who are more vulnerable than us. Take mental space and time away from social media when you need to, and when you have the emotional capacity, lend a helping hand to those who need it right now, because there are many people who do.

08.01.2022 Guest teacher number 3 for our Summer Intensive 2021 is Harrison Hall. We are so happy to welcome Harrison back, who was a company member in our founding year 2012, and performed in our first ever full length work ‘Dance Robot Dance’. Check out Harrison’s bio below. Single Day or Full passes available. Book through https://www.yellowwheel.com.au/summer-intensive-21 HARRISON HALL... Harrison Hall’s work situates contemporary performance and dance in experiential art environments. His works focus on offering audiences a sense of transport into altered states of reality to shift unfounded beliefs about the world. His devising process is always grounded in somatic exploration of efficient movement and finding shared physical states that unfurl into discourse. Harrison’s recent work traverses states of flux within present day masculinities and inverting dominant perspectives, He explores pop-culture ideas of modern society and uses non-conventional spaces for performance. He has presented his works in a variety of contexts including at Temperance Hall as part of their Midsummer Festival program. He has worked for 7 years with Yumi Umuimare collaborating and performing on her ‘Dasshoku Series’ (Dasshoku Shake, Dasshoku Tea Party, ButohOut Festival). Alongside this he curates contemporary art within a myriad of Music and Arts festivals throughout regional and metro Victoria including Pitch, Beyond the Valley, Let Them Eat Cake, Strawberry Fields and Hybrid Festival. This year Harrison was selected as a participating artist at the Taiwan Performing Art Centre’s ADAM Artist Lab, to develop creative connections with leading artists across the Asian region. As a collaborator, Harrison has worked within Japan, China, Malaysia, the Middle East, Europe and extensively throughout Australia. Collaborating and performing with many artists/companies including; Yumi Umuimare and Theatre Gumbo (Japan) Tony Yap (Malaysia) La Fura Dels Baus (Spain) The Shanghai Theatre Academy (China) The Australian Ballet Jo Lloyd Stephanie Lake Shaun Parker Company + Ivo Dimchev (Bulgaria) Gideon Obarzanek Lucy Guerin Inc Dancenorth

08.01.2022 A massive Congratulations to Lucy Guerin who has been named as an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the Queen's birthday honours list. The award is for "distinguished service to contemporary dance as a choreographer, and as a mentor and advocate for emerging artists and new works." 05.01.2022 Patrick O’Luanaigh, a Company Member since 2017, sharing some personal thoughts about his experience with us. It’s hard to describe what Yellow Wheel has done for me, because it has influenced almost every aspect of my life. Some of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had have been because of, in some way, Yellow Wheel. Some of the closest friendships I have were formed inside Lucy Guerin’s old studio, and many more in WXYZ. I’ve spent entire holidays and weeks of my life b...eing a part of Yellow Wheel and it’s work, because it’s just that good. Who I am and how I think is in no small part influenced by the work I’ve been involved with, and the people I’ve been in conversation with through Yellow Wheel. It has given me the most amazing opportunities, and opened me up to contemporary dance. Honestly screw Adam Wheeler for making my life so god damn intertwined with this company. But still, thank you. I don’t know who I’d be without it. #MelbourneDance #YouthDance #AustralianDance Pat O'Luanaigh

05.01.2022 Guess who’s back in the studio after the longest mid year break ever? Yellow Wheel Company 2

05.01.2022 Yo! We’ve been quiet recently. We all know how wild the past year has been, and Yellow Wheel would like to say how incredibly proud we are of the incredible humans that make up our company. 16 months ago, we first came together as the 2020 company, and have been through a wild journey, navigating the emotional and physical journey the pandemic has put us through. We have 17 Company 1 members and 11 Company 2 members that have spent the past 16 months doing in studio rehearsa...ls/classes, online rehearsals/classes, drawings, filming, questioning, creating, persevering. We created a video work with another company in the UK. We went through one of the tightest lockdowns in the world and now understand new levels of appreciation for what it means to be able to come together and dance. In a couple of weeks we will be announcing and releasing tickets for our June season and would love to share what we’ve been creating with you all so keep an eye out.

03.01.2022 After Yellow Wheel’s session today we reflected on the work of Dance pioneer Tristan Relise. His work Boulder has been performed and documented in more than a dozen countries over five continents, and he was one of the youngest artists ever to gain international acclaim in the contemporary industries. 02.01.2022 A photo from the very first weekend Yellow Wheel came into existence in 2012. Look closely and you’ll see some familiar faces...

02.01.2022 SIMULCAST has been shortlisted in the Australian Dance Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Community Dance (2019). Congratulations to the rest of the team who brought it together and the performers! ... Conceptualized and directed by Alice Lee Holland, SIMULCAST is a study in simplicity. Young, old, trained and untrained dancers work together to create this murmuration, taking place in Melbourne at Birrarung Marr. Created and produced by Chunky Move in association with Tasdance and Yellow Wheel, SIMULCAST is a solo for celebrated Australian dancer James O’Hara, supported by a local cast of hundreds. A reflection on the fact that we are all part of something bigger and increasingly removed from a sense of human connectedness SIMULCAST brings us back. It is a contradiction. It is about the single and the multiple, minimalism and spectacle. Visually beautiful and aesthetically satisfying, solo movements trigger mass cannons, ricochets and swarms. Amidst moments of unity and discord we must listen to one another and respond. Watch as one moving body multiplies into hundreds. SIMULCAST was presented as part of Dance Massive 2019. Photos by Pippa Samaya

02.01.2022 This Sunday and Monday, Yellow Wheel’s Company 1 and 2 are stepping back into Zoom to begin spending time together, making movement, discussing ideas, sharing and channeling our energy towards our next season. We can’t physically see each other, we don’t have a set date yet (hopefully April next year), we will discover it as we go but to be honest, this isn’t the biggest challenge this company has faced. In 9 short years Yellow Wheel has gone from nothing to an incredible pla...ce of support and guidance for so many people and emerging artists. It has thrived as a not for profit, generosity led organization that is proud of not just the artists we create, but all of our YW family regardless of what career they choose or where they end up. Youth/emerging arts is so often overlooked and dismissed, but always championed and done by the most incredible young people. We’ll see you soon Melbourne. Xx Gregory Lorenzutti

01.01.2022 It’s been 7 months since we’ve been in a studio or physically together. Right now it feels like there’s nothing else to say but be kind to yourselves Victorians and Melbournians, and feel whatever you’re feeling.
