24.01.2022 We have gone through our collection of photos and put together a few comparisons of Murray Cod, Trout Cod and Hybrid Cod. understanding how to distinguish your ...species is very important and hopefully from these pictures you will see the difference in the species. Murray Cod - is the most common species and their pattern can change depending on waterway. They have a green/yellow mottled pattern in juvenile fish and young adults. The pattern will cover the entire fish and they will have a white belly. As they grow above the 80cm mark they lose that pattern and become a more dull green colour. Trout Cod - are a totally protected species and are easy to tell apart if you know what they look like. They are grey in colour with a black dotted pattern. Their top jaw overhangs the bottom and their top jaw is pointed. DON't look for the black strip through the eye as some Trout Cod don't have this bar and some Murray Cod do. The Hybrid Cod - is a cross breed between the two fish and can sometimes be very hard to identify. From the gills down to the tail they have the pattern of a Murray Cod. The head is what gives away that it is a Hybrid Cod. They have an unusual sparse pattern on their head that is not seen on both Murray Cod and Trout Cod (as you can see in the pictures). They also have the overhanging and pointed jaw like the Trout Cod. The 4th pictures shows a comparison of all three fish. By studying this picture you should be able to tell all three fish apart. Even having this picture handy when out on the water will help in your identification. Hopefully this will give everyone a better understanding when it comes to identifying cod.
