13.01.2022 YMCA history of the Red Poppy 102 years ago, Moina Michael, who worked for the American YMCA, read Lieutenant Colonel McCrae's poem just before the Armistice and was so moved by it that she wrote a poem in reply and decided to wear a red poppy. At a meeting of YMCA secretaries, held in November 1918, she talked about the poem and her poppies, and Anna Guérin, the French YMCA secretary, started selling poppies to raise money for widows, orphans, veterans in need and their f...amilies. We Shall Keep the Faith by Moina Michael, November 1918 Oh! you who sleep in Flanders Fields, Sleep sweet - to rise anew! We caught the torch you threw And holding high, we keep the Faith With All who died. We cherish, too, the poppy red That grows on fields where valor led; It seems to signal to the skies That blood of heroes never dies, But lends a lustre to the red Of the flower that blooms above the dead In Flanders Fields. And now the Torch and Poppy Red We wear in honor of our dead. Fear not that ye have died for naught; We'll teach the lesson that ye wrought In Flanders Fields. #RemembranceDay #LestWeForget YMCA Red Poppy Project, YMCA Bowen Hills 2018.

04.01.2022 Today is National #SorryDay On the 26th of May 1997, the landmark Bringing them Home report was tabled in federal parliament. Bringing them Home is the final report of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families. Today marks 23 years since the Bringing Them Home report and 22 years since the first National Sorry Day.... We take this day to commemorate, mourn, reflect and reconcile on the painful history of the Stolen Generations and its ongoing impacts on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In acknowledging this injustice, we also commit to action towards healing and an equitable future. #InThisTogether #NRW2020
