25.01.2022 We would like to begin with the YMCA Holder Children’s Acknowledgement of Country THIS IS OUR LAND, THIS IS OUR SKY, AND THESE ARE OUR PEOPLE. WE AT YMCA HOLDER WOULD LIKE TO SAY THANK YOU TO THE NGUNNAWAL PEOPLE FOR LETTING US PLAY AND LEARN ON THEIR LAND. WE PROMISE TO LOOK AFTER IT, THE ANIMALS AND PEOPLE TOO ... NAIDOC Week is a time for us all to reflect, respect and learn about aboriginal history and the ways of the land. Here at YMCA Holder we acknowledge the traditional owners, their culture, their history and we recognise them as the 1st people to walk our land. This week we watched the release of new the Playschool episode Acknowledgement of Country What an inspiring program, to see such a popular children’s TV show, recognising the traditional owners of the land. We were all very moved and many conversations have taken place since then, wanting us to do more, share more and advocate more. Below is how we experienced NAIDOC Week 2019 Voice, Treaty and Truth. Thank You to invited guests Carla, Angela and Ruth for sharing your family culture, knowledge and history and thank you to Melanie for bringing in some stories to share. Your time and care is very much appreciated.

24.01.2022 How did the children at YMCA Holder develop their knowledge, understanding and belonging throughout Reconciliation Week? - They showed their daily respect by saying ‘acknowledgement of country’ in big bold proud words. - They engaged in storytelling gaining an understanding of what reconciliation is and what it means to be sorry. ... - They walked the Ngunnawal land reflecting on how the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people might live. - They used the colours, materials and language of nature to investigate and connect to people and community. YMCA Holder takes time to acknowledge the many individual ways of seeing, knowing and living in our community and the wider world. We acknowledge the traditional owners of the land, and believe in acknowledging the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families and community by showing a commitment to reconciliation. (YMCA Holder Philosophy 2018) Our journey continues and requires us all to ‘Walk Together with Courage’.

13.01.2022 IMPORTANT INFORMATION: The Y Canberra advises that all Early Learning Centres and Vacation Programs will be closed tomorrow Monday 6 January until further notice due to hazardous air quality. This decision has been made with careful consideration and is necessary to ensure the health and wellbeing of the children in our services and our staff. We will be reviewing this regularly and will provide regular updates via social media, our website and directly to affected families. Affected families will not be charged for the period the services are closed. Please contact us on 02 6242 4040 / [email protected] with any questions

12.01.2022 Good morning Canberra. It is still smoky out there. Our advice to the community remains that the best way to avoid exposure to the smoke is by staying indoors ...(with windows and doors closed). We’ve included some tips below on reducing smoke in the home. A reminder too that advice on how to fit P2/N95 masks properly is available from ACT Health at: https://www.health.act.gov.au//heavy-smoke-and-hot-conditi Further information on P2 masks arriving in Canberra and how we will be supporting vulnerable Canberrans to access them, will be provided later today. Tips to keep your home as smoke-free as possible: Keep all windows and doors closed. Stay in air-conditioned premises and switch the air conditioner to ‘recycle’ or ‘recirculate’ to reduce the amount of smoke entering the building. Only use an evaporative cooler if the system is filtered. Note: some domestic evaporative coolers are less likely to filter fine particles such as smoke and may introduce smoke inside. If you any questions about your evaporative cooler, please speak to the manufacturer or place of purchase as models may vary. Determine where the gaps are where smoke may be able to enter. Look for obvious signs of draughts-lights coming in under and around doors and windows and feel for draughts. Keep your pets indoors with clean water and food. Keep pets bedding inside if possible. Seal internal cracks and gaps and consider sealing up vent covers. Air out your house when the smoke clears. A State of Alert has been declared for the ACT. For more information on what this means, what you need to do, support available and service changes visit: https://esa.act.gov.au/state-alert-declared-act-0

04.01.2022 Great news!!!! YMCA Early Learning Centre Holder has now become a collection point in Weston Creek, for the Australia wide bottle top program #Lids4Kids. Supporting ‘Envision Hands’ based in Victoria, they are a not-for-profit community initiative that uses 3D printing to turn plastic waste into mechanical hands and arms for children, with the products being sent around the world. Amazing stuff!!!... It takes 500 bottle lids to make a plastic limb for one child, so start collecting your lids with the ‘2’ and ‘4’ code and give this fantastic organisation all your support. Drop off your lids to our centre between 7am - 6pm at 174 Dixon Drive Holder, ACT. For more information on the project, check out the facebook page ‘Holden Rally Team- Lids4Kids’, and visit the website https://envision.org.au/ Early Years Learning Framework- Principles and Practices High expectations and equity- Committed to equity believe in all children’s capacities to succeed, regardless of diverse circumstances and abilities.

01.01.2022 Life is better IN PYJAMAS YMCA Holder participated in National Pyjama Day. A yearly event organised by the Pyjama Foundation to help raise funds and awareness for over 1000 children in foster care, and help them believe in the power of their dreams and unlock their full potential. While it’s really important to remember the reason behind the day, we dressed up in our warmest, comfiest and sometimes the silliest pyjamas and slippers, to which we managed to raise over $200 and collected many donations of pyjamas, blankets and cuddle toys!!!
