04.01.2022 Can you outrun a bad diet? When trying to lose weight, which is more important: diet or exercise? Most people believe that food/beverage consumption and physic...al activity are equally important when it comes to weight loss. Knowing that our body fat is determined by the balance of calories in and calories out, it’s easy to understand why people may think this. But the reality is, we have much more power over the calories in side. In fact, we have complete control! Think of it this way: A moderately obese person doing moderate-intensity physical activity, like going for a bike ride or a very brisk walk, would burn off approximately 350 calories an hour. Most drinks, snacks and processed foods are consumed at a rate of 70 calories per minute. Therefore, it’s easy to see that it only takes 5 minutes of snacking for someone to wipe out a whole hour of exercise! There still continues to be a gross overestimation of the capacity of exercise to burn off extra calories. Think about it. For every bite of a snickers bar, you would need to jog half a kilometre. And for a single piece of pizza, you would need approximately an hour of brisk walking per slice! Don’t get me wrong. I am definitely not one to discourage any form of physical activity! Not only is exercise important for our mental wellbeing, but it has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer, colon cancer, diabetes, gallstones, hypertension, heart disease and stroke. In fact, a single exercise session can improve insulin sensitivity for up to 17 hours, and may be used to treat pre diabetes as effectively as medication! But the truth is, the food that we put into our mouths every day is one of the strongest ways to impact the calories in/calories out equation, and impact our weight. It takes motivation and consistency, but when you stick with it, you will become more and more consciously aware of the decisions you make every day when it comes to your diet, and will be the best way to reach our health goals.
