25.01.2022 One of our missions at Yoga for Freedom is advocating the efficacy of yoga as an approach of trauma recovery. And the importance of trauma-informed yoga. When overcoming trauma or overwhelming emotions, curiosity is your friend. When we can take a pause and start noticing the sensations which are connected to the emotions in a neutral and observational way with curiosity, the fear and overwhelm starts to diminish.... So if you're feeling a little under the weather today, take a pause to connect with the body. Notice what's there. And then what happens next. Makes a world of difference.

24.01.2022 From Atira, Art to Healing Founder and Director, on musings in Nepal: "I had a beautiful vision in my meditation, hopefully the planting of seeds in which I'm hoping will grow into a great, strong tree. I wanted to share with you my vision. In my meditation, I was holding hands in a circle with the Art to Healing team, each and everyone of our amazing and wonderful volunteers who are deeply committed and dedicated towards our cause. In the center of our Art to Healing circle ...were thousands and thousands of girls and women who had experienced sex slavery, trafficking and exploitation. One of these girls was Shanti (not her real name), a girl who I worked with last year who had cigarette burns all over her face. Yep, there are millions of girls like Shanti out there. Girls whom we're dedicated to support their healing and freedom. The hearts and wombs of our team was connected to the hearts and wombs of these women and girls, with an exquisite golden light pouring from our hearts to theirs. I saw how these girls and women were being transformed by this golden light. This luminous light which reminded them of their true nature and their essence. Their essence which cannot and can never be destroyed by bad experiences, or even the theft of innocence. Supporting our team with their hands behind our hearts were the amazing people who have funded us in our campaign. People from bigger organisations who will be our future support. Past angels who have believed in our work and donated so generously to our cause. Present angels who have recently donated to our Art to Healing campaign. I saw how Spirit and Abundance poured into these support circle's hearts, into our hearts and wombs, and into the girls and women's hearts and womb, creating a magnificent circle of Grace. This is my vision. My inspiration. Alone, we cannot help girls like Shanti. But together, this vision is possible. It's not an idea anymore. Through action, it's a reality. Join our circle of support by becoming a Yoga for Freedom Ambassador today: www.yogaforfreedom.org.au

23.01.2022 Yes!!! Yoga for Freedom is back this year to unite the yoga community with service and social change! Over the past 4 years, we've raised over $65,000 and supported the recovery of over 3,500 women and girls who have experienced child sex slavery. We are running for one more year (this will probably be our final year as we're a very small team of volunteers and we don't have enough support) but we intend to make this an event to remember and inspire other yogis of the power ...of yoga in creating a change in the marginalised and disenfranchised communities of the world. For more information, visit www.yogaforfreedom.org.au to see how you can be involved! Stay tuned!

20.01.2022 Part of what we do in our Art to Healing trauma recovery programs which is supported by Yoga for Freedom is providing supervision and mental health consultancy to the local anti-trafficking partner organisations and counsellors working with the girls and women who have experienced child sex slavery and exploitation. Every time we visit a shelter or an organisation, we are deeply touched and moved by the dedication and devotion that these amazing psychosocial counsellors provi...de these girls and women rehabilitating from child sex slavery. Some of these girls, as we've heard stories from these amazing workers, are exploited as young as 7 years old. These counsellors are relentless at their work, and their work is full of love and deep service. Working in this field is challenging. The stories are heartbreaking. The struggles of the girls are heartbreaking. Many of these counsellors do not have a lot of support or education. Some of them have also been trafficked survivors themselves, who have gone on to help other survivors as well to heal from the same experiences, to give them hope. To improve mental health and trauma care in shelters, the support needs to be integrative. These counsellors need to upskill themselves so that they can have the skills to heal from their own trauma, and in turn, help others to do so. We love witnessing the ripple effect of the area of supervision and consultancy, as we can reach more women and children who have experienced human slavery. We heartfully thank OVN who hosted our small group supervision session today. And we are so grateful for these amazing women for doing what they do with love and compassion.

17.01.2022 What's trauma-informed yoga? Is it just a buzzword? What does it even mean? Who is it for? How does it apply to you, both as a student and teacher? How can it inform, improve, deepen your practice and protect you from injuring or harming others? As an introduction to Trauma-Informed Yoga and it's importance, Gemini Adams and Atira Tan discuss in this community conversation: * How trauma-informed yoga can help you as a student... * Why trauma-informed yoga is essential for teachers * Why is trauma and its impacts dangerous * What happens when you don't 'get' trauma * Why aren't all TTC's trauma-informed (yet) * Is trauma-informed a 'buzzword' or something more * Why unresolved trauma can restrict our ability as teachers Want to learn more? 15.01.2022 We love this article written by Adrienne Maree Brown who coined the phrase: Pleasure Activism. In this article, she shares her process in how using Generative Somatics to explore trauma can help make authentic connection and collectivity more possible, which in turns can bring more depth into our work as social change activists. The word somatics comes from the Greek root soma, which means the living organism in its wholeness. It is the best word we have in English to unde...rstand human beings as an integrated mind/body/spirit, and as social, relational beings. In somatic speak, we call this embodiment shape, and the collective body or collective psychobiology. Somatics is a path, a methodology, and a change theory by which we can embody transformation, individually and collectively. Embodied transformation is the foundational change that shows in our actions, ways of being, relating, and perceiving. It is transformation that sustains over time. Somatics pragmatically supports our values and actions becoming aligned. It helps us to develop depth and the capacity to feel ourselves, each other and life around us. Somatics builds in us the ability to act from strategy and empathy, and teaches us to be able to assess conditions and what is clearly. Somatics is a practice-able theory of change that can move us toward individual, community and collective liberation. Somatics works through the body, engaging us in our thinking, emotions, commitments, vision and action. -From What Is Somatics?, Generative Somatics) Enjoy! https://www.yesmagazine.org//adrienne-maree-brown-social-c

13.01.2022 We all need connection in order to heal. Indeed, as Dr. Peter Levine shares: "Trauma is not what happens to us, but what we hold inside in the absense of an empathetic witness."... And sometimes, that empathetic witness doesn't even have to be another human being! Read more about this heartfelt and moving story about a donkey who helped this little girl to speak again. 13.01.2022 The concept of untouchable being, or Chhaupadi, requires complete segregation of a menstruating woman. Some ethnic groups within Nepal ritualize menarche with the custom of gupha basne, or staying in the cave. During this ritual, the menarcheal girl is required to remain in isolation for up to 12 days. As many as 95% of Nepals mid and western regions observe this practice. Women remain outside the home, often in a shed-like dwelling for the duration of their menses, ...prohibited from consuming dairy, having access to public water, entering temples, or touching any male (including their husband), out of fear of contamination. As a result, many women experience negative emotions and shame towards their bodies. This disconnection survivors have formed between their bodies and emotions is common among participants of the programs at Art to Healing. Our use of art therapy, in combination with womens reproductive health education; serves to empower, cultivate resilience, self-regulation, create positive attitudes and personal values as they seek to re-identify and reintegrate into society. Check out our new Art to Healing blog and read more about how your support for Yoga for Freedom has ipacted the lives of these women and children who have transformed the shame towards their bodies into acceptance and empowerment. https://www.arttohealing.org/healing-menstrual-discriminat/

10.01.2022 It is with sadness in our hearts that we announce the cancellation of Yoga for Freedom this year. With the COVID-19 pandemic, it is of utmost importance that everyone's safety and health comes first and foremost. And with the new laws of social distancing and bans of gatherings, we have no choice but to postpone this heartwarming event to the next year 2021. The truth is that everyone on the planet needs more love, kindness and compassion at this moment. We hope that the pr...actice of yoga will help and support all of you right now to stay grounded, calm and present with what's happening. Whether we like it or not, the planet is asked to be still and to look inside during this time of COVID-19. These times, with the gifts of yoga, can bring opportunities for new beginnings, deep self-reflection, and change. At Yoga for Freedom, we hope to be part of the current of Life which seeks to inspire, empower and bring peace and harmony to this transitional and potent phase of our lives. Our hearts and support go out to those struggling in social isolation right now, those who have lost their jobs or stranded in strange countries. And we are very grateful to those working double-time to care for the sick and elderly, and who are risking their lives to look after others in this time of need. More than ever, we need to look after ourselves and prioritise our self-care, and to be kind, thoughtful and supportive of each other. We hope that you will join us next year, and our team at Yoga for Freedom is sending blessings of love, kindness and strength at this time to every one of you out there.

08.01.2022 Happy #internationalwomensday ! This year, as we launch Yoga for Freedom on International Women's Day, we celebrate CNN Hero Anuradha Koirala, founder of MAITI Nepal who has rescued over 12,000 girls and women from trafficking. 07.01.2022 So what's the deal about child sex slavery? The facts: 1. The scourge of human trafficking, sometimes called modern slavery, affects some 40 million men, women, and children trapped in a horrendous web of forced labor, sexual exploitation, and coerced marriage (ILO and Walk Free Foundation 2017).... 2. Human trafficking is now one of the worlds most lucrative organized crimes, generating more than $150 billion a year. (Global Slavery Index, 2016) 3. The rise in child trafficking in Asia is linked to the alarming increase in online child pornography, including live streaming of sexual abuse of children. It is a lucrative business estimated to generate $3$20 billion in profit a year. These facts and statistics are heartbreaking indeed. However, at Yoga for Freedom, we believe that instead of collapsing into a hopeless and helpless heap in overwhelm and turning away, we can use the gifts of Yoga to support those in need and distress who have experienced such trauma. Rise up and make a difference! You can volunteer and help us, or if you're a yoga teacher or studio owner, become an Ambassador teacher. Through your classes, workshops and events, you can be a beacon of hope for such women and girls today. Check our website out for more details: www.yogaforfreedom.org.au

04.01.2022 One of the main motivators for Yoga for Freedom was to change the current of our modern-day yoga culture to one of narcissism to one of sharing and giving back. It seems that of late, our yoga culture consists of skinny women in perfect asana poses on social media, which is a violent reduction of the true essence of yoga. Yoga is about uniting body mind spirit. And when that happens, we realise that we are not just our body or mind. We experience the inter-connectedness of ...life. As this becomes embodied wisdom, we start to take responsibility for the wellbeing and healing of others as well, those less fortunate than ourselves. Let's bring back the true essence of yoga, to create a culture of care, of kindness, of service from the heart. Let's give back to the countries where Yoga come from, India and Nepal, and stand up for the fight against sex slavery. Interested? 03.01.2022 If you have an idea, just do it. 4 years ago, I tapped into a powerful vision in my morning meditations. It was the vision of Yoga for Freedom. After 10 years of teaching yoga, I wanted to create a culture in the yoga community which focused on giving back to the social justice issues, especially those in Nepal and India, the countries where Yoga and Buddhism originate. 4 years on, Yoga for Freedom has raised over $60,000 and have helped support more than 3000 women, children... and men to end the vicious cycle of child sex slavery and exploitation. It was such a beautiful kick-start to Yoga for Freedom in Konstanz, Germany at World Yoga Day organised by Yoga Compassion in Action and the wonderful Tracey Cooper and Vanessa Allgaier. These 2 beautiful co-founders had an idea, and they did it. 2 years on, they have spread the message of social change in yoga in their little community in Germany/ Switzerland. I was delighted to shared the genesis of Yoga for Freedom and Art to Healing as we devoted our yoga practice as a prayer to world peace with more than 100 yogis. We raised $2000 this weekend for the cause of ending child sex slavery. One idea. 15 women get vital trauma support for their recovery towards freedom now...through one idea. So much gratitude to all the wonderful angels here in Germany and Switzerland. So if you have an idea, do it. Don't procrastinate. Get a piece of paper and write down your ideas. Share it with your loved ones. Ideas become reality. And we need to take action to make our ideas a reality, especially ground breaking ideas for social justice, change and innovation. The world needs your ideas to become reality. Jump on the yogaforfreedom website for more deets to join, or if you'd like to give back, join us as a Yoga for Freedom Ambassador this year. . . . #yogaforfreedom #yogaforsocialchange #yogaoffthemat #stopthetraffick #stoptheviolence #worldpeace #spiritualactivism #yogachangeslives
