15.01.2022 A random thought for the day... So, we (Melbourne Opera) are currently doing Rossini's "Otello". Great reviews, but I often hear people saying "pity it's in English..." and yes, the repetitions and phrasing does sound a bit funny at times. But is that the nature of this Bel Canto opera, and to native Italian speakers, would it sound the same in Italian? Italian speakers, let me know!

13.01.2022 The Richard Wagner Society (VIC) is once again able to offer a Young Artist Award for attendance of the 2020 Bayreuth Festival (23-30 August 2020). The award is for a young Australian person, under 35 years old (as at 20 June 2020), studying to be a singer or in another operatic métier (e.g. director, conductor, musician, designer) who would benefit from the experience and hopefully be involved in Wagner productions in the future. This is a fantastic opportunity for the young artist to experience first class productions of Wagnerian works at Wagners Bayreuth Festspielhaus, and an opportunity to meet some of the artists and network with industry people and opera aficionados. 13.01.2022 LYRIC OPERA DIRECTING WORKSHOP 2019 Announcement Application deadline has been extended to April 15th. The Lyric Opera Directing Workshop exists to provide path...ways and experience for directors expanding their practice, and for singers or other practitioners interested in trying their hand at opera direction in a supported environment. It is run by Lyric and financially supported by the City of Stonnington, who also host the event at Chapel Off Chapel, plus Arts Centre Melbourne and Opera Australia (providing participants with complimentary tickets to productions in the Autumn Season). We offer practical scene work sessions with singers, a music director and repetiteur, industry sessions, networking opportunities and the chance to work with other directors in a supportive environment. It is quite unique! No cost for participants is involved. If you have questions about time commitment please email [email protected]. Or to simply apply, please submit a current resumé along with a brief statement of no more than 250 words on why opera' and what you hope to gain from participation in this workshop to [email protected]. Applicants must have production/performance tertiary qualifications OR experience as a creative, stage manager or performer on at least 4 productions on the professional or independent opera/theatre stage. 05.01.2022 Expressions of Interest for Lyric's 2019 Opera Director's Workshop are now open! Following the success of workshops in 2016, 2017 & 2018, Lyric is again offerin...g the opportunity for four aspiring/developing opera directors to participate in a deep immersion workshop week coordinated by acclaimed opera director, Suzanne Chaundy. The workshop will be held from May 20 to 25, 2019 at Chapel Off Chapel and Arts Centre Melbourne (NB most sessions are during daytime business hours). The workshop includes mentored practical scene work sessions with singers, conductor and repetiteur, sessions on how to prepare a score and schedule an effective rehearsal period, attending Opera Australia productions, networking and pitching opportunities culminating in a mini showcase presentation. Applicants must have production/performance tertiary qualifications OR experience as a creative, stage manager or performer on at least 4 productions on the professional or independent opera/theatre stage. It is the aim of this workshop to guide new directors toward production outcomes. Previous participants Lara Kerestes received a Greenroom Award nomination for her direction of 'Il Signor Bruschino' for Lyric in 2016 and will direct 'Fly' later this year and Cathy Hunt directed 'Les Mamelles de Tirésias' in 2018. We have consistently had outstandingly high calibre applicants and participants. To apply please submit a current resumé along with a brief statement of no more than 250 words on why opera' and what you hope to gain from participation in this workshop.
