25.01.2022 Michael. 2/2 This is the second part of Michaels story for #storiesofyoga. "People have always asked, how do you stay so calm? Why can’t I annoy you? Don’t get me wrong, I can lose it, but generally I’m pretty relaxed. I remember in my 30’s I took a position with a new company and had to have a medical check, my heart rate was 35, they thought I was dead! I guess I developed an attitude through yoga - I look at the world as a whole and see what are actually the important thi...ngs. I am an accountant by trade, and I have always seemed to gravitate towards very stressful jobs, and I have found yoga serves to clear and relax my mind. Importantly, it stops me from bringing the stresses of the work day home with me. When my daughters were small I would practise in the mornings so they could join in. My eldest struggled to pronounce yoga, so our little daily routine was christened morning yoghurt. All my daughters practise now - ten or twenty years later. I hadn't thought about it, but that's three generations practising yoga. I am glad to think they have a practise they can return to when things get stressful. I have been to classes with one of my daughters, but the studios are so focused on exercise, but I don’t practise yoga for exercise. I am used to it being all about breathing and relaxation, a way of destressing rather than focuses on fitness. For me, it’s about teaching calmness and the ability to truly be with yourself and your feelings. It helps you feel more self reliant and at peace with yourself. Yoga helps you build a sense of identity."

24.01.2022 Yogahood is excited to welcome our new Volunteer Coordinator, Janita to our team! Janita is a qualified yoga instructor with @crescent.yoga and works with studios across Melbourne helping Victorians achieve a strong body and balanced mind both on and off the mat. ... Janita has ten years experience in organisational roles in the sports and travel industry, and thrives on supporting people in realising their passions. Janita observed that despite 2020’s challenges, we have been granted the opportunity to review our habits and, in some cases, turn to yoga as a source of calm and connection. She is incredibly excited to work closely with all of our valued volunteers, to share the benefits of yoga with neighbourhoods and communities in need. If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer yoga teacher with Yogahood Australia, please email Janita at [email protected]. Please join us in welcoming the lovely Janita to the team! FUN FACT: Janita never holds anything the way it was intended; hand her a pen or a mug if you don't believe us! #yogahood #volunteeryoga #yogaservice #yogainaction #yogateacher #yogavolunteer

24.01.2022 If you can be a linking force between someone with limited options and opportunity that wouldn't otherwise reach them, be that linking force. If you have the privilege of time, use some of it to practice seva, or selfless service. There are many out there who work two or three jobs just to put food on the table. ... And while we may all wish we had more hours in the day, many of us spend way more time scrolling through Facebook than we care to admit. Using some of that time to help others not only uplifts the whole community, but makes you feel good inside and takes the yoga off and away from your mat. Perfectly said @yogamaris in her article, Acknowledging Privilege in the Yoga Community. #yoga #yogainaction #yogaservice #givebacktothecommunity #standup #normaliseequality

23.01.2022 This photo and partner pose reminds me of what happens when we work together, support each other, and find some kind of joy through a challenge. It also reminds me of working alongside our GM, Mel Cross. While Mel and I havent been physically doing this pose together, it certainly feels like we have been working together in this way! Especially over the last 4-6 months as weve watched so many changes take place within the organisation and externally around us. Weve had to ...keep our balance to keep the organising moving forward and essentially...together. So I want to thank her - for her resilience, strength, determination, commitment, flexibility, adaptability, and courage. We have always been blessed to have her part of the team but I feel especially blessed at the moment knowing that as I step away to go on maternity leave again soon, the Interim CEO will have someone like her by their side. If you are keen to apply for our Interim CEO role, the details are on website > current vacancies. You will be working closely with Mel and supporting each other through this period of change and growth. More details about the role in our downloadable PD... You dont need to necessarily have held senior leadership roles previously. Your commitment to supporting our mission, delivering outcomes, and driving the organisation forward is much more important. If you have any questions about the role, please contact Joe, our Chair, at [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you! - Madeleine (Photo from one of our outreach classes at WELS - used with permission).

23.01.2022 As promised, some Pay It Forward inspiration! You know that friend that always makes you laugh? Or that cafe that serves the best breakfast that you cant wait to get back to? Or that colleague that got you out of a tricky situation a while ago? Tell them! We cant underestimate just how far a, hey, youre great can go.

18.01.2022 When we awaken there is a moment before we remember the burdens we bear, that yesterday we lost or won a fortune or a battle or a love or that today we must go to work or to court or to hospital or we have a nowhere to go, before we start piecing together who we have been or who we will be, and in that moment we are simply consciousness, sensation, appetite not yet linked to memory or will. I like the way we are in that naked moment before we are defined, in that briefest moment before we don ourselves. Thank you @buddhi_mind for sharing this poem as part of Yoga Australias #internationalyogaday #selfcare event this morning. Thanks to all the teachers involved and giving us a moment to pause in our day.

17.01.2022 As a volunteer organisation we know how important it is to take time out to recharge, reflect and relax. See details below and click on their Yoga Australia profile and link to sign up This International Day of Yoga we want to take some time to focus on you. ... The last few months have been incredibly challenging for so many people. That's why our special IDY event is themed 'Care for yourself so you can care for others' Let's join together to spend a morning focusing on some self love. Because it's only through self care and strong community support that we can have the energy, compassion and strength we need to continue to be there for those we care about. See more

14.01.2022 Lucy The first wonderful human to share her story of yoga as part of our Stories of Yoga series. I had always been interested in the benefits of yoga, but somehow, I had always been sceptical. I always tend to gravitate towards exercise which makes me out of breath or sweaty, where I felt I could see my effort. Yoga was something I had dabbled in a few times, but it was always the first thing to get dropped once I became busy, but when lockdown was announced, I didn't have ...that excuse anymore. I work as a Tourism Sales Manager, a fairly stressful job, which became even more difficult once COVID happened. I struggled working from home, all the frustration from the working day would follow me into my living room and I just couldn't seem to switch off. After a few videos from Yoga With Adriene, I found my after-work yoga practice became my way to reset at the end of the working day. Concentrating on the moves and focusing on my breathwork didn’t leave much room to fixate on anything else. I hadn’t planned for yoga to become a daily practice, I didn't participate in a challenge, or even attend a studio, but here I am over six months on from the first YouTube video and I have never missed a day. Even on Christmas day, I was on the mat with my friend’s six year old. I think the greatest revelation for me was that yoga wasn’t so much about the physical, but the mental. I have always been so goal-orientated, I used to become so fixated on perfecting certain moves, but once I got over that mentality, the real changes happened. One day I just found I could do crow pose, I hadn’t been practising this move, but there I was, able to hold it with such ease. That is the joy of yoga, it feels like doing something positive and kind for myself, and everything else, like improved flexibility or fitness, is just a nice, unexpected bonus. I have become such a preacher, I recommend it to everyone, especially my friends with anxiety. I do still love my other sweaty exercises, of course, particularly lifting weights and hiking, but just the other day I noticed, I haven't had a single injury or even major muscle ache in the last six months - yet another unexpected benefit of my yoga practice!" #storiesofyoga #yogahood #yogaforeverybody See more

13.01.2022 Joe The Yoga Lad Construction Carpenter and Yoga Instructor Joe shares his story of yoga. Yoga was purely a physical thing for me at first, I was attending CrossFit in Saint Kilda and they started offering classes. But then I started gradually noticing changes, practising regularly made me feel more stable and grounded. I started attending a hot yoga class here and there, then a studio, then a retreat. A lot of people I met at the retreat suggested I should train as a teacher..., but I held off for a while, I always felt you should have life experience before you teach others. I have been a qualified instructor for four years now, but I am not interested in teaching full time right now, I feel I make the most difference telling people about the benefits of yoga through my job as a carpenter. The culture on construction sites is not conducive to good mental health, there is a lot of old-school masculinity and stigma around expressing your emotions, as well as the constant risk of redundancy and the financial stress that could bring. The construction industry has the highest rates of suicide in Australia, and more needs to be done to address that. We have made some really important steps, like the Bluehat initiative, which ensures every team has a mental health first aider, but that only really helps once someone is already really suffering. We need to change the culture of construction and put greater emphasis on the importance of nurturing staff and showing everyone respect. That's why it’s more important to me that I look approachable than looking like a yogi, whatever that means, tradies want to talk to someone relatable, not preachy. I want the boys at the building site to be able to walk up to me and ask a question. It does surprise some people to hear how much the boys at work ask me about my practice, but at the end of the day we all want to be healthy, it’s just life can get away from us sometimes, and we turn to drink and bad habits to cope with it. I know from experience how hard it can be to break that cycle. Before practising yoga I was trying to hide behind my ego and alcohol, now I think I am a much better person, I have changed a lot. I am mindful of what I eat and drink. I am a calmer, less reactive person. Knowing how much my practice has changed my own life, I am confident by offering tradies access to yoga and mindfulness, financial education and on-site support we can change the culture of the construction industry for the better, and I am looking forward to being a part of it.

08.01.2022 How are you? Over the coming weeks we will be sharing some of the ways that the Yogahood team are practicing self care. Wed love to know your tips and tricks for showing a little kindness to yourself

07.01.2022 The mental health impacts of Covid-19 have been huge and we know the calming impact of yoga is as important and needed as ever before. While yoga has been made accessible online for many across this period, it has still been largely inaccessible to those in the community with no income, no access to technology, or no safe space to practice. But with restrictions starting to lift, we are expecting to be able to head back out into the community in term 4 (start of October) and... provide free yoga to these communities once again. This is where we need to hear from you. Do you have one hour spare a week for 6 weeks to deliver an outreach program? Do you have the capacity to dedicate the proceeds of one of your paid classes to help us raise money for items like new yoga mats? Or perhaps you have the time and energy to help us on the core operations team (we need volunteers with experience in Human Resources, and marketing). For those that need to take the time now to rebuild and recharge - whether it be your internal strength, wellness, finance or other - please take care of yourself and do not put up your hand. We realise asking you to give during a time when so many of you have had so much taken away is a big ask. But if you have the energy, time and passion, we are here waiting for you. Please reach out to me directly and let me know how you can get involved. Thanking you, Madeleine (reachable at [email protected])

05.01.2022 Michael 1/2 The first part of Micheals amazing contribution to @storiesofyoga. -... My Dad had a massive heart attack in 1961, he was only 41. It was a faulty valve, which would be easily treatable now, but back then there was no cure as such. He was recovering from dengue fever and malaria at the time. He would have huge mood swings, which he knew he needed to find a way to control, but there wasn't much available to help Dad with his recovery in the 60’s, so he started researching himself. He would order books from abroad and research possible treatments to discuss at his appointments. Poor Dr Hamilton must have been driven mad. Eventually he found a study describing the benefits of yoga, and with the approval of long suffering Dr Hamilton, began practising daily, simply copying the moves from the book. My own introduction to yoga was seeing my Dad and our Dog practising a series of poses on the living room floor. I myself struggled with pretty severe respiratory problems as a teenager and my Father thought yoga could help my issues like it had helped with his. Yoga wasn't a big thing then, so every Thursday after school I would get the tram to Collins Street to attend one of the only yoga classes in the city. Everyone in the class was much older, I was only 17 whereas most people were in their 40s or 50s. I’m not really convinced yoga did help with my sinus issues, but it certainly helped with dealing with stress of school and University. Yoga has always helped me put things into perspective, when you slow the world down, you begin to understand what is actually worth worrying about.

05.01.2022 Welcome to our Board of Directors, Shirin Sethna! Shirin studied science and law before working as a lawyer. After deciding to pursue a lifelong desire, Shirin left the law and became a yoga teacher, teaching in multiple studios across Melbourne. Shirin also works as the Community and Campaigns advisor to Adam Bandt, which provides her with the opportunity to work in a role where she can help to create both systemic and local change. Shirin is passionate about s...ocial justice and joined the board of Yogahood because she believes that the benefits of yoga should be available to everyone in the community. Shirin says While I yoga and have felt the benefits that a yoga practise brings, I have also often been deeply disillusioned with the yoga industry. For a number of years, Ive found it difficult to disentangle the wisdom of the practise, from my own discomfort with the commercial insta-yogi culture predominantly made up of affluent white skinny girls and brogas offering up nonsensical spiritual sound bytes and preaching positivity and complacency in the face of a world filled with suffering and injustice. I joined the Yogahood board because I needed to be reminded of the real yoga, the yoga that exists beyond the polished concrete floors and chic minimalist vibes. Im so pleased to be involved with an organisation whose mission is to bring free accessible yoga to marginalised groups and I encourage anyone who had lost faith like I had, or who is looking to add social meaning to their practise and teaching, to get involved. Please help us welcome Shirin to the team! #yogaservice #yogaforchange #yogainspiration #yogateacher #yogainaction

04.01.2022 Designed in 1971, the Aboriginal Flag is one of Australia's officially proclaimed flags. However, did you know the Aboriginal flag is copyrighted? 04.01.2022 Hi, my name is Jia. I have been a yoga student for the past 10 years, before completing my 200hr RYT 5 years ago. Through my own practice and teaching experience, I have seen how much the practice of yoga can hold so much benefit for people in all walks of life. Coming from a dance background, I have always been aware of the health and psychological benefits of moving the body. However, upon developing a dedicated and consistent Ashtanga yoga practice, I soon realised the imp...ortance of accompanying movement with an awareness of the breath. I strive to centre my practice and classes around establishing a connection between the mind, body and breath; with equal focus on the development of strength and flexibility. Apart from my interests in yoga, I have recently graduated with a Masters in Development Studies, and also have a background in gender studies and psychology. Finding this role as a research coordinator at Yogahood seemed almost too good to be true, as it literally was a combination of all my passionsnamely, in research, psychology, yoga, as well as working alongside communities. I am so excited to take on this role, and am very honoured to be part of an organisation that is doing such great work in making yoga more accessible for all communities.
