21.01.2022 Did you know the Pranayama practice of ‘Ujjayi (oooh-ja-eee) Breath’ can both calm and enliven the body and mind, it means to gain mastery and is a most beneficial breath to deepen your meditative experience. It’s my go-to for a simple meditation. Try it ~ find a nice spot to just sit and breathe. To create the Ujjayi breath, one must constrict the back of the throat, similar to the constriction made when speaking in a whisper of a ‘haaaaaaah’ to fog up a window. In oth...er words, it's an audible breath, and it's often compared to the sound of the ocean (or affectionatelt known as Darth Vader breath). Although there is a constriction of the throat, the Ujjayi breath flows in and out through the nostrils, with the lips remaining gently closed. This breath is intended to be long, controlled, and smooth through the nostrils, whilst creating a vibrational sound it is so subtle it’s only audible to you and no other. Traditionally intended for meditation and restorative poses, rather than flow or intense postures because of it’s ability to reduce heart rate. 14.01.2022 My 3 tips on self-discipline for your home Yoga practice... click link in BIO for 3 Tips - https://www.inspyayogatherapies.com//my-3-tips-on-self-dis ~ You are not alone if you find it a challenge getting into a regular routine or discipline to practice your Yoga at home. In the Eight Limbs of Yoga, the 2nd limb is the Niyamas - I see the 5 x Yamas as the moral and ethical guidelines for how the yogi ideally acts in society and in relationship to others, and the 5 x Niyama...s as the same outline but for how the Yogi treats themself. These 5 observances are done in silence as a personal exploration of the inner body, mind and soul, never done for worldly praise for then they miss their mark. ~ One of the 5 Niyamas is 'Tapas', translated as 'generating heat to burn off impurities'. It's the fire inside that drives us to do what needs to be done, whilst having an acceptance that there are certain pains that lead to purification and honouring of Self. The essence of Tapas is a discipline that comes from a place of love for oneself....not a form of punishment. Sticking to something you set out to do - especially when it challenges your go-to habits - takes discipline. So many of our habits unfortunately are destructive, to achieve our goals we must be honest with ourselves, come from a place of absolute self-love and a willingness to grow and heal. Even the over-thinking of a project at work, constant worry about the future, what might or might not happen ~ t...hese acts are removing us from the present moment, from doing what it is we are doing right now whole-heartedly, immersed in an act of love without attachment to the outcome. We also place this attachment and grasping on our relationships to people and our pets. Have you ever wondered how one person can suffer loss in an unimaginable traumatic event, and yet rise up and become a beacon of light and inspiration for others..yet another can experience loss and the grief sets in and envelops their spirit evermore to go on living a lessor life because of this loss? The answer is in the practice of Aparigraha, non-attachment to the joy another brings to us, instead knowing that it exists within us always. To be grateful and unattached to what was requires allowance and acceptance. ~ Becoming attached to a positive feeling or experience is completely human, why wouldn’t we want to feel happy for as long as we can? 04.01.2022 HELP Online Yogis - how do you find the drop down menu for 'Class Type'' categories, ie when searching for a class to suit you in the online library content? Do the Class Type / Style names help you find what you are looking for, or find it confusing? I WOULD LOVE SUGGESTIONS in comments if you have any. 03.01.2022 THURSDAY POSE OF THE WEEK ~ Pascimottanasana 'Stretch of the West (or back body)' Firstly I must point out I have monkey length arms so this placement of hands may not be anatomically possible .... but makes for a pretty picture right?! ~... The purpose of this Asana is to lengthen from the soles of the feet, achilles, calves, hamstrings, glutes, spinal muscles to forehead. It's a restorative pose (for most made this way by using props for more comfort), introverts the mind and prepares us for Savasana/Meditation, stimulates digestion, lowers the heart rate, calms nervous system and adrenals. ~ Find a resting place here, perhaps with support suggested below, close your eyes, breathe in and out of the nose, go within. Let the breath take you into the pose rather than force. Stay for a while, 3-5mins and give the tendons, ligaments and fascia the patience of allowing the shape, give the nervous system the time to restore. ~ Cautions, modifications + props; - Use a strap around balls of feet to open chest and spine lengthened lifting up out of the pelvis at the initial stages of folding forward, also great if mid back (thoracic) is over-rounding. - Relax shoulders/prevent shrugging/resist pulling forward with force/arm strength. - Keep knees bent to allow hamstrings to release the sit bones to glide back and pelvis to roll forward (avoids straining/excess rounding of lumbar) - Place folded blanket under the sitting bones so the focus is on the sitting bones moving back and wider so the hip crease deepens rather than lumbar rounding. - If acute lumbar conditions lay on back for single leg in strap hamstring stretch instead to avoid lumbar flexion entirely - Place a bolster across knees or along legs to rest weight of forehead so spinal cord relaxes - Place a chair over legs and rest hands under forehead to completely relax spinal cord and back body. - Place rolled hand towels behind knees to help engage quads without locking knees into extension to protect lower back from over-flexing - Resist hyperextending knees and letting heels lift off floor. If belly is on thighs and legs are able to be straight lift on knee caps but press down on heels. See more

02.01.2022 The joy of adopting a beginners mindset ...could we be missing out if we're the expert? ~ So many times (and more often than not with incredible resistance or forced by injury!) I have stepped back into a beginner's mode with my Yoga practice. It has given me opportunity to learn more about my body, my injuries and how they wish to heal, even just to slow down and have less expectation has been so rewarding. In fact it is the reason my core is so strong because I return to ...the simple, fine tuning practices over and over again. In fact I owe it all to the first 2 months of my Teacher Training (2004) where we barely got up off the floor - it near drove me made, clearly I had no zen mindset back then, BUT I owe this time to the strong foundations I work with today.
