25.01.2022 Harvesting Operations during high fire danger conditions Each harvest Yorke Peninsula is blessed with good crops, but this also means high fuel loads during summer. Currently farmers are required to cease harvest operations when the Grassland Fire Danger Index (GFDI) exceeds 35. Weather conditions during a GFDI level exceeding 35 increases the challenges around managing and controlling fire behavior. Council urges those involved in harvest operations to seriously consid...er ceasing activities on days of total fire ban. Please understand, no matter how well machinery is maintained, the risk of starting a fire is always present. By ceasing operations, together we can reduce the risk and likelihood of an uncontrolled harvesting fire during severe conditions like we are currently experiencing. 16.01.2022 Don’t let Caltrop hitch a free ride This weekend think about spending some time tackling prickly pest weeds like Caltrop. This time of year is the germination period for this spiky declared weed, which spreads by sticking to shoes, tyres and stock. Landscape Officer Ben Page says right now Caltrop is easy to pull out by hand. "Think of it as a COVID-safe activity; a quick walk around your property with your eyes peeled for Caltrop."... If you've already got Caltrop prickles from previous years, here are a couple of tips: 1 Throw on some thongs and walk over the infested area (then carefully dispose of the prickles) 2 Lay down a piece of old carpet, walk over it and then put it in the bin. Look out for Innocent weed and Khaki weed too, as it's the prime time for these burr weeds to take hold. Read the full story: https://bit.ly/3nOaeTu
