25.01.2022 She experienced such hardship since coming to Australia straight into a violent relationship in which she was isolated by the perpetrator and allowed no independence. She came to us through a women's refuge she had escaped to. She had no confidence and self-doubted herself and her place in this world. Her growth over the past year and now seeing her have her own haven is just incredible and our whole team is over the moon!! This makes me emotional!! This is just so fantast...ic I can't believe it. Meet Ruth "The first house I met Rochelle was just a hoot! Driving over to the other side of the city following a van and not being sure of where we were going to park or anything, it's a ...huge adventure. Once we arrived, we went through the house. There was nothing there, and every room was empty. All of sudden the furniture arrives, all the boxes of cutlery and crockery and all sorts of things that need to be put together. After two hours it was amazing to see the house all set up and you can't believe it. It's like helping build a new house, somewhere that's welcoming and warm. "I started volunteering with You Matter after looking for a good cause to donate items from our hou...se move. After setting up one house as a volunteer I was asked to take on the role of Co-ordinator. We work in teams with 3-4 volunteers who all offer their own sets of skills and abilities in the work we do to set up homes for our clients. We often start our work in empty houses/apartments and when we leave have set up a real home for our clients and their families. This is an extremely shocking statistic. This figure will have increased this year from the reported rise in domestic and intimate partner violence due to Covid-19. As a community we need to continue to support the women around us fighting domestic violence to leave an abusive relationship.
