22.01.2022 Great News! The YMS Concert Band will recommence rehearsals on Saturday, October 17 in a new venue. The IMP Music Centre at Kaleen High School will prove a great new home for the young musicians that have waited patiently for so long. Rehearsals will follow strict COVID protocols and be reduced to 2 hours. If you are between 9 and 18 years and have played your concert band instrument for a few years you are most welcome to come along and see how it goes. The first rehearsal i...s free! 20.01.2022 Young Music Society’s Summer Music School 2020 - another great music school celebrating our 51st year. The Summer Music School in 2021 will have to be different but will still offer fantastic quality music and arts experiences to Canberra’s young people.

18.01.2022 YOUNG MUSIC SOCIETY ANNOUNCES 2021 SUMMER MUSIC PROGRAMS Due to the uncertainty of the COVID19 restrictions, the YMS is not able to offer our usual fantastic Summer Music School in 2021. We are, however, offering a selection of excellent smaller music programs for all school-aged children from the ACT and surrounding areas in various centres throughout Canberra.... weekdays January 11 - 22 , 2021 PRIMARY MUSIC PROGRAMS Northside - Macquarie Primary School, Macquarie (Director - Jim Sharrock) Southside - Holy Family School, Gowrie (Director - Lisa Gill) These programs run from 9am to 3.30pm daily with a drop off from 8.30am and After School Program until 5.30pm (for a small additional fee). You can apply for either week or for two weeks - single day enrollment is not possible. These programs are open to all students from the ACT and surrounding areas who are going into Years 1 to 6 in 2021. These are generalist programs of music and artistic skills development that will engage, educate and entertain your children over the last two weeks of the long hot summer break. Students would participate in fun music games, dance, song, instrument making, drawing, acting and other exciting arts activities. In a break from YMS tradition in 2021, we are not able to loan students instruments to play - however, if students would like to bring the instruments they play along, they would be most welcome. APPLICATIONS OPENING SOON SECONDARY PROGRAMS All Secondary programs will be conducted at the Canberra Girls Grammar School and are two week programs from 9am - 3.30pm daily. These programs are open to any student going into secondary schools or colleges in the ACT in 2021 (Years 7 - 12). Although there are no auditions, all programs have the requirement of a medium to advanced competency on an instrument appropriate to the program - i.e. be able to play their instrument to a competent level and be able to read music. Students must provide their own instruments and music stands (with the exception of Percussion Big Bang). Activities will include tutorials, ensembles, masterclasses and music skills development in each of the specialist areas. 12.01.2022 Despite the extremely heavy smoke haze in Canberra, the 51st Young Music Society Summer Music School WILL go ahead as scheduled tomorrow morning. In order to minimize the effects of the heavy pollution, we have put in place measures that will ensure that your children are in air conditioned rooms all day where the air is filtered, and they will have very minimal or no time outdoors if the pollution rate is unacceptable, according to the daily ACT Health recommendations. We h...ave also put in place a fire drill emergency plan for the duration of the school. The students will also be kept cool with plenty of access to fresh water through the day while enjoying the exciting program that we have planned.
