21.01.2022 Mindful Monday - Spring 2020 Values at Work Happy Monday all So - you have taken a minute or three, caught your breath and returned to the present moment. But now what? Being present does not reduce the length of your to do list and it does not buy you extra time. ... It can though help the clever part of your brain to kick back into gear and choose what to do next. But how do we decide what is important when there are so many competing demands and forks in the road? It can be helpful to know what the most important things are to you, both in your personal life and professional role. Here are some questions that might help you to consider your options and make choices as best you can with your time at work. Try answering them before you start your day or shift. What is the most important part of my job today? What do I want to achieve the most? What am I going to prioritise when things get busy? What is likely to throw me off course? What will I do at times when I cannot keep up? Who can I share my workload, prioritise or problem solve with? What (if anything) can be left undone? Can I accept the idea that it is almost impossible to clear the decks every day? How do I want to represent myself to the people around me? What if someone needs my support? My health is important to me. How can I manage as best as I can, so that my body and mind are looked after when I become busy? What will I do if I become stressed, upset, or overwhelmed? What is the most important thing I can do for myself after work, that reminds me of what is good about finishing? The chances are you already know the answers. It is just a matter of being mindful at the beginning of the day so that your values have driven you down the best path. Rachel Salisbury
