19.01.2022 This week we celebrate Women's Health Week, a campaign specifically designed to encourage women to learn to take control of their own health and unlock their own power to take the necessary and positive steps to be the healthiest and happiest versions of themselves. In a world that is dominated with technology and access to an abundance of information, it can be tricky to navigate through what is true, accurate and up to date information versus Dr Google! Knowing where... to turn and who to ask can be scary and confronting, and in current COVID circumstances, having access to the appropriate professionals can be limited. The age old phrase of find your tribe could not be more important than right now and we encourage all our practice women (and families) to have a strong and supportive network of health professionals that they can turn to for appropriate advice when needed. Having a tribe or network allows us to be as informed as possible to make the best health directed decisions for us as individuals whilst being supported. Here at Your Body Works we believe that Knowledge is Power, and that knowledge about yourself is Self Empowerment. This week we will be specifically sharing tips, ideas, podcasts, blogs and the latest evidence on health issues specific to Women's Health. Below is a one of Dr Mel's favourite Podcasts (she has MANY) that targets an array of women's health issues in a fun and lighthearted manner. If you have other suggestions of podcasts you like listening share them below and Dr Mel will put together a list to share with everyone. 18.01.2022 "Breast milk grows babies' bodies, fuels neurodevelopment, provides essential immunofactors and safeguards against famine and disease -- why, then, does science know more about tomatoes than mother's milk? " Katie Hinde August 1-7 is World Breastfeeding Week and this years theme is "Support breastfeeding for a healthier planet" In her TED talk 'What we don't know about mother's milk' Katie Hinde - Associate Professor of Biology, Senior Sustainability Scientist, Science write...r and communicator, delves into the complexity of breastmilk and its importance of developing babies and their mummas, but also asks an incredibly important question... How do we optimize mother and infant health just by messaging about breast milk to moms without providing the institutional support that facilitates that mother-infant bonding to support breastfeeding? 18.01.2022 It is recommended by the World Health Organisation and UNICEF that a child is exclusively breastfed for the first 6mths and thereafter be combined and complemented with nutritious solid foods, with a continuation of breastfeeding up to around 2years (or when you as a family choose). This timeframe can feel like a lifetime for some mothers, especially those who experience difficulty with feeding. Incredibly, some of our mammal mothers nurse their children for up to FOUR times... as long as humans. Interesting fact, the Orangutans spend the longest amount of time breastfeeding, with it not being uncommon for them to continue to nurse up to... wait for it.... 8years!!! This week is World Breastfeeding Week (August 1-7) where we recognise, celebrate and support all mothers and their breastfeeding journeys. 16.01.2022 June 15 - 21 is Men's Health Week and this year the emphasis is on the importance of 'Mateship'. For healthy human relationships to begin there must be a way for two individuals to connect. - Maggie Dent With research suggesting that girls not only develop their verbal communication and language skills but also their non verbal cues for building rapport (smiling, waving and expression of love and affection) earlier than boys, it suggests that as parents/caregivers, we need t...o support and nurture our boys as they navigate their way through childhood/adolescence relationships in order to help build healthy and strong relationships well into adulthood. Isolation and loneliness has long been highlighted as strong contributors to our mental health, regardless of gender or age, and that on average men make up 6 out of every 8 suicides in Australia each day. Professor John MacDonald from the University of Sydney, states that the "best thing a man can do for his health and wellbeing" is to have at least 3 close mates. The below article gives some great insights into the difference between boys and girls and their relationship building skills as well as some beautiful examples on how we can best support the little men in our lives develop strong friendships both now and later on in life!!! #yourbodyworks #yourbodyworkschiropractic #excellanceinchiropractic #menshealthweek #mateship #buildingrelationships #brainbuilding #languageandcommunication #areyouok #developmentthroughplayandexperiences

10.01.2022 Early childhood is a period of rapid development and a time when family lifestyle patterns can be adapted to boost health gains." - WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus In 2019 the World Health Organisation released age specific guidelines on physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep for children under 5 years of age. These guidelines acknowledge the importance of establishing healthy habits early in life to help support and shape development from ...infancy through childhood/adolescence and into adulthood. This is one reason why we are so vocal about the importance of Tummy Time. Understanding not only how Tummy Time supports natural and healthy postural and neurological development in your baby, but also how much time your baby needs will help you ensure they get the minimum time needed and then anymore then this is a bonus! Join us on Wednesday 22nd July from 9:30am 10:15am and dive deep and explore all areas of the importance of tummy time. 08.01.2022 "My bub hates tummy time, they scream as soon as we put them down on the ground". This is a common statement we hear in practice when talking to parents about how much tummy time their little ones are doing. What many people are unaware of is that Tummy Time is not just based on the floor, that anytime they are on their tummies, whether it be cradled in your arms or across your legs, when they are placed in a position that encourages use of their postural muscles, this is co...nsidered Tummy Time. Learning all our fun and creative ways to ensure your bub is getting adequate Tummy Time and actually enjoying it is one of the many topics we discover and explain in our much loved "Lift Off" Tummy Time workshop. 07.01.2022 Did you know that when we are born, our spine resembles a C shape. By the time we are upright (sitting, walking) curvature through the neck and lower back has also developed and our spines now naturally resemble that of an 'S' shape. These curvatures are what allow us to hold ourselves upright and move about. Encouraging good postural development starts right from the beginning. From early infancy we can greatly influence strong postural development through tummy time . A...s our children start to grow, develop and move around, encouraging activities (swinging on our belly's, reading on our tummies) that stimulate our extensor muscles (muscles on our back) continue to help create positive postural habits. All of us can most likely recall at least one time in our childhood when we were told by our parents, grandparents, teachers or any adult really to sit/stand up straight. However, sitting up straight is contrary to the natural design of the spine itself, and encouraging the old school military stance is actually doing our childrens developing spine and posture more disservice, creating different postural distortions and tightening of muscle groups that in-fact encourage shrinking of the spine which is NOT what we want for correct posture. So how can we encourage correct posture and support the natural curves of the spine? 1 Ditch the word straight and simply encourage your children to sit up. 2 We as humans are hardwired to learn from experiences, abit like monkey see monkey do . As adults, the best thing we can do to help children create healthy habits is to lead by example. Research shows us that children (and adults) are more likely to respond in a desired manner when the facts are given to them, so help your children to understand the importance of posture and how it effects their health by educating them in ways that interest them (youtube clips, kid friendly channels, books). 3 Bringing them to a health professional (Chiropractic, Physiotherapist etc) who specialise in spinal health and posture allows the kids to be educated on a different level. One of the greatest and empowering lessons we can give our children is the information and skills to take control of their own bodies and health to take into their future.

04.01.2022 Watching our children master new skills brings so much joy to our lives . One minute they are babies, totally dependant on you for EVERYTHING, and the next minute they are walking, talking independent little humans exploring the world. In childhood development we hear a lot about our BIG milestones (Rolling, crawling, walking). But what is important to remember is that for these big milestones to occur, first we must achieve the LITTLE milestones first that will help us to... achieve the bigger more well known ones. Can you remember when your child first learnt to walk? While it may feel like they stood and walked off straight away, there were lots of crawling, kneeling, standing, bouncing, cruising furniture and boom, crash, splats before a successful launch and they were off! Well it is these repetitious attempts and experiences that are helping the neuronal connections in our brains stronger, enabling us to move, think and do just about anything we dream of. Below is a great video showing just how our neurons (brain cells), connect, making stronger connections which over time will help us grow and learn! #yourbodyworks #yourbodyworkschiropractic #excellanceinchiropractic #brainconnection #buildingbrains #braindevelopment #neuronsthatfiretogether #wiretogether #makingconnections #neuronsarelikestars #connectionsarelikeconstellations

04.01.2022 The toddler losing the plot in the grocery store. The screaming 9-year-old at the computer when they lose a game or the teenage slam of the door when they dont get their way. Hands up if you have witnessed this or can even remember such scenarios as a child. Dealing with childrens outbursts can be very challenging. However, understanding that these meltdowns, tantrums and emotional struggles , especially in our younger children are a natural part of development is ...important. Also understanding that these meltdowns and emotional outbursts are generally more about the big feelings rather then about bad behaviour. As our children grow and develop they learn through experience the art of self regulation and as their parents, care givers, teachers etc we have a beautiful and important role in guiding them through these big feelings and helping them (and us) to understand and cope with these moments. This webinar has been designed as a guide to teaching children to understand and regulate their emotional world, as well as equipping parents with skills to also cope and appropriately respond when their childs world appears to be falling apart around them. An integrated brain results in improved decision-making, better control of body and emotions, for self understanding, stronger relationships and success in school. And all begins with the experience parents and other caregivers provide, which lay the groundwork for integration and mental health. 02.01.2022 The more we can armour up our children with helpful information, strategies and a ‘get back on the horse’ mentality, the more we can increase their chances of living meaningful, successful lives. It’s fair to say 2020 has brought its fair share of disappointments, and has provided everyone with the chance to learn how to cope with these disappointments better than many of us may have given ourselves credit for. However what’s important to remember is that feelings of disa...ppointment to particular situations is a ‘normal’ human response (no matter your age) and learning how to manage our disappointment is a natural and important skill we ALL need to learn. In the article below Maggie Dent presents great insight into the importance of educating our children about understanding and navigating their way through life’s challenging moments in constructive ways that help promote resilience and a capacity to overcome disappointment! #yourbodyworks #yourbodyworkschiropractic #brisbanechiropractic #northside #childhooddevelopment #supportingdevelopment #buildingresilience #copingstrategies #maggiedent

01.01.2022 Guess what time it is Master T? It's Tummy Time!! We had soo much fun at our first live 'Lift Off' Tummy Time workshop and cannot wait to do it all over again this Wednesday.
