24.01.2022 COVID-19 testing eligibility. There are many non-COVID-19 viral illnesses circulating in Canberra and we understand this is causing concern. The Chief Medical Officer has called for strict adherence to current testing criteria or we will overwhelm Australia's testing capacity. This means that we are not able to test everyone for COVID-19. The criteria for determining when we can order a COVID-19 test change every few days. We will provide updates of changes. Currently, we...Continue reading

23.01.2022 Government funded flu vaccines have arrived. We received 1000 government flu vaccines (600 for those over 65 years, 200 for ages 6 months to under 5 years and 200 for ages 5 - 64 years). We have flu clinics scheduled during the week at all practice locations. We have Saturday and Sunday flu clinics at YourGP@Crace to provide a low risk environment. Please only come in for a flu vaccine if you do not have any cold and flu symptoms. We expect to receive approximately 400-500 ne...w vaccines per week from ACT Health and will open more bookings as we receive more stock. If you cannot find an appointment that suits please check again in a week or two. Who is the government vaccine for? All patients 65 years or older (stronger dose flu vaccine which covers four strains this year). Pregnant women Children aged 6 months to less than 5 years Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and over Patients aged 6 months and over with medical conditions predisposing to severe influenza such as: heart disease, lung disease or moderate/severe asthma, diabetes, renal failure, chronic neurological conditions including multiple sclerosis and seizure disorders, immune compromising conditions including HIV infection, or who are aged 5 to 10 years and are receiving long-term aspirin therapy. When? Anytime from now. Peak flu season is usually June to September in Australia, usually peaking in August. What is in the 2020 vaccine? The vaccines are quadrivalent, covering two influenza A and two influenza B strains expected to be circulating in 2020: - A (H1N1): an A/Brisbane/02/2018 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus (new) - A (H3N2): an A/South Australia/34/2019 (H3N2)-like virus (new) - B: a B/Washington/02/2019-like (B/Victoria lineage) virus new) - B: a B/Phuket/3073/2013-like (B/Yamagata lineage) virus (included in 2019 vaccine). The vaccine does not give protection against COVID-19. Please book online at yourgpcrace.com.au, yourgplyneham.com.au or yourgpdenman.com.au. YourGP@Crace has the best availability. There are four flu clinic appointment books at Crace - Flu Clinic Government Funded A to D. Flu clinic bookings are billed to Medicare. These appointments are for the administration of the flu vaccine only. What about children? Babies can receive the flu vaccine from six months. Children under five years are eligible for the free government flu vaccine. This year for the first time the flu vaccine from age six months is as strong as the adult dose. Children aged up to and including eight years require two doses, at least four weeks apart, in the first year they receive the vaccine. We recommend all children receive the flu vaccine.

09.01.2022 Tips to minimise the risk of infection with COVID-19. The evidence so far indicates the virus is spread from person to person through small respiratory droplets. Wash your hands &/or use hand sanitiser whenever you cough, sneeze, blow your nose, care for someone who is sick, before cooking and eating, before unloading the dishwasher, after touching your face and after going to the toilet. Social distancing - keep 1.5m from others where possible when outside the home, especia...lly if you or others are unwell. Cough or sneeze into your elbow or into a tissue. Place the tissue in the bin and wash your hands. Do not shake hands, hug or kiss on the cheek, with the exception of close family members. Try not to touch your face with your hands. You will be surprised how often you do it once you become conscious of it! Be aware that touching 'fomites' is a potential mode of COVID-19 transmission. A 'fomite' is an inanimate object that has been contaminated with a virus. This can happen when the virus is expelled in droplets following a cough or a sneeze, which then fall, contaminating surrounding surfaces. Contamination may also occur following being touched by a person who is contagious. Viral transmission may occur after touching a contaminated surface and then touching your mouth, nose, eyes or food. Examples of fomites: - your mobile phone - taps, turn off the tap using a paper towel - door handles - elevator buttons - menus, consider how you may handle a menu and then handle food, eg bread, with your hands - supermarket trolley handles - self-serve grocery check-out touch screens - ATM keypads - pedestrian crossing buttons (use your elbow) - shared pens (keep one with you) - money - cash/coins. Try to create some lower-risk areas. For example, you could sanitise your hands before entering your car. Create a family policy that everyone wash their hands on entering the house. Please share this post! If together we can reduce COVID-19 transmission, we can help protect the most vulnerable in our communities!
