23.01.2022 Urine testing for your pets Your pets urine can tell vets many things! Testing can be done: if pets drink more water than normal, urinate with pain or blood, toileting in abnormal places (down the bathroom drains or sink), or urinating often. Some pets constantly lick their penis or vulva and seem very irritated. ... * Urine specific gravity (USG) Normal dogs have concentrated urine of greater than 1.030, cats concentrate greater than 1.035. If animals are drinking a lot, the kidneys work to dilute the urine. A grey zone (called isosthenuria) exists between 1.008 and 1.012 the kidneys are not functioning correctly not concentrating, but not diluting either. * Dipstick screening A veterinary dipstick checks many basic components: pH level too high (>7) and the risk of struvte crystals can occur. Glucose reading normal kidneys filter glucose any glucose in the urine needs testing to check if your pet is diabetic, plus we need to check that kidney disease is not present. Blood and protein both of these should not occur. Blood can occur due to cystitis, tumours or trauma. Protein can be high in inflammatory and infectious diseases of the kidneys and bladder. * Cytology microscope exam Urine is centrifuged at very high speed. At the bottom of the sample sediment is removed, placed on a slide and prepared for microscopy. This sediment can appear very gritty or sandy (most often crystals/stone fragments), or there can a red colouration (blood cells). Slides are prepared with veterinary stains to illustrate different sorts of crystals or stone fragments, also parasites, abnormal cells or blood. Common reasons for abnormalities in urine tests include: * Urinary tract infection/cystitis these infections are treated with antibiotics and anti- inflammatories. * FLUTD stressed cats with blood and protein. Anti-inflammatories plus pheromone treatment. * Prostate disease in male dogs medical treatment +/- prostate size reduction via injection or desexing. * Trauma myoglobin is a pigment that looks like blood in urine, particularly in cats and dogs that have been hit by cars, or had a big fall. This resolves with pain relief and absorption. * Kidney insufficiency / failure early kidney insufficiency can be medically managed with tablets to assist with filtration and kidney function. * Tumours in old pets, tumours can grow in the bladder neck, or on the bladder wall. Some tumours are treatable with surgery or chemotherapy. All the above tests are conducted in-house at our clinics, with our vets discussing the results with you on the same day. If you are worried about your pets urine or toileting, or if you pet is drinking more water than normal, early testing may pick up illness which can be treated. #ypvets #YPVpetducate #urinetesting

13.01.2022 Chester Bennington & Sherbie Bennington were both very brave little guinea pigs for their nail trims and health checks recently Guinea Pigs as Pets Guinea pigs, or cavies, make excellent pets. They are a rodent native to South America, and the average life-span of a guinea pig is between 4-8 years. They are noisy animals, and love the company of another guinea pig of the same sex.... Diet - Guinea pigs should be fed a commercial diet of pellets, however be careful not to feed too much as many of these diets are high in fat and carbohydrates. Grass or grass hay MUST be provided daily to provide adequate fibre in the diet and allow proper wear on their teeth (their teeth grow continuously through life). Guinea pigs are prone to Vitamin C deficiency, and therefore need to have adequate Vit C provided in the diet. Foods rich in Vit C include: fresh leafy greens (broccoli, cabbage, celery, endive, beet/carrot tops, brussel sprouts, zucchini, capsicum, spinach leaves, bok choy & other Asian greens, dark-leafed lettuce varieties, fresh (uncooked) peas and stringed beans), herbs (parsley, coriander, mint, dill, basil, dandelion, rocket) and fruit (kiwi fruit, strawberries and a small amount of citrus). Foods to be avoided include cereals, grains, nuts, seeds, washed or brushed potatoes, wild mushrooms and berries, onions, garlic, shallots, avocado, rhubarb, breads, biscuits, sweets, sugar, breakfast cereals, and chocolate. Your pet must also have access to fresh water every day. Housing - Your pets cage must: -Be made of wire as they will chew through wood -Be as large as possible (for one guinea pig minimum 1m x 0.5m x 0.25m high) -Be well-ventilated, sheltered from the elements and predators guinea pigs are susceptible to heat stress -Have toys such as cardboard boxes to play in -Have bedding provided shredded paper, straw or hay -Have dripper bottles for water (not bowls) -Not housed with rabbits due to susceptibility for disease -Cleaned weekly - soapy water, rinsed and allowed to dry Healthcare - Vitamin C deficiency if not fed correct diet as above. Signs include lethargy, weakness, inappetance, weight loss, rough haircoat, diarrhoea, mucky eyes. Guinea pigs are born very mature (eating normal food from birth!), and reach sexual maturity much earlier than other animals (4-6 weeks in a female). Guinea pigs will reproduce quickly, and therefore males and females should be kept separately or desexed by your vet. Guinea pigs are prone to contracting mange (mites). These will cause your guinea pig to become very itchy and lose a lot of fur. Guinea pigs can also be prone to respiratory tract diseases, diarrhoea, dental disease and sore feet from poor cage condition (too rough or dirty). If any of these occur, contact your vet. Please contact your friendly YP VETS staff if you have any queries about your pet guinea pigs. #ypvets #YPVpetducate #guineapigs #YPVpetducate #ypvetspatientsoftheday

10.01.2022 Anal Gland Problems Have you ever noticed your dog scooting or dragging its bottom along the ground? Most commonly this is a sign of anal gland problems. Your dog is trying to relieve the pressure being caused by the fluid building up within the anal gland. ... The anal glands sit either side of the dogs bottom and the duct empties into the rectum. The secretion that comes from these glands is very smelly, often brown in colour and is the consistency of water or oil. If the gland is not emptied the secretion may thicken and become infected. Anal gland abscesses often burst out either side of the anus. This is a very painful condition. Anal glands are utilized by wild dogs for territorial marking; the sacs emptying each time the dog passes faeces. Domestication has changed the anatomy of many breeds, and the inability to successfully empty these glands is more prevalent in certain breeds. Some dogs go through life never having a problem and some dogs suffer on a regular basis needing constant manual emptying. Surgical removal of the glands is the only total cure for ongoing impacted or infected anal glands. Both glands will require removal under general anaesthesia. Recovery generally requires a couple of days in hospital to ensure cleanliness of the wounds and good pain control. If your dog is scooting (sitting on its bottom and dragging its behind along the ground), licking excessively around its bottom area, licking its front paws, chasing its tail, losing hair around its tail, crying out in pain; often when trying to defaecate, or is tender to touch anywhere around the tail or lower back, it may be responding to the pain of full anal glands. To help with natural expression of anal glands: - Ensure your dog is getting enough fibre in its diet and adding pumpkin to their diet can help with this. - If your dog is prone to impaction you can try a product called: Glandex. This chewable treat helps to create firm and bulky stools which help the glands to empty naturally as the pet defecates. Glandex also contains natural anti-inflammatories to help support healthy anal glands as well as probiotics and digestive enzymes to support a healthy gastrointestinal tract. If you think your dog has an anal gland problem talk to one of our veterinarians. Help is available for a very annoying and sometimes excruciating problem. #ypvets #YPVpetducate
