24.01.2022 Insect stings Dogs and cats are naturally curious, often a bit too curious when it comes to insects. Most of the time, stings from bees and wasps will cause only minor irritation and pain. However in some cases, if the animal is stung inside the mouth/face or throat region this can be dangerous and requires a visit to the vet. This is dangerous as the swelling can close the throat region and block the airway. ... Severe reactions can occur from multiple stings, or if the animal has an allergic reaction to the sting. Signs of severe reactions are: -large amounts of swelling -weakness, and difficulty breathing. If a severe reaction is seen take your animal to the vet. If your animal is stung and the stinger is still present you can try to remove it by using a bank card, scraping it along the region. You can also wrap a ice pack and apply to the wound the reduce swelling & pain. Watch you animal closely for any signs of severe/allergic reactions. For any further advice on insect stings, please phone your nearest clinic. #ypvets #YPVpetducate #springhassprung #beestings

11.01.2022 BONES : COOKED OR RAW? (The big debate!) There has been heated debate over decades about feeding dogs bones! - and if you do / cooked or raw? YP VETS unfortunately see too many cases where cooked bones have caused massive issues for dogs - vomiting, splintering through bowel and intestines, blockages in the stomach and constipation or bloody diarrhoea. ... One lucky patient was presented to our clinic as not eating, lethargic and painful after feeding on cooked chop bones in the last day or so. Sedation and X-rays revealed this large, sharp irregular shaped bone stuck deep in her pharynx embedded in the sensitive tissues - causing infection and pain (the smell was pretty bad!). Fortunately our vet was able to remove the foreign body, and our patient went home on pain relief and antibiotics for a few days. YP VETS generally recommends any bones fed to dogs should be raw, and an appropriate size. Heating or cooking bones changes the chemical composition of the bones and makes them brittle and splintery. Thank you to our patient and owners allowing us to share "this bony problem" so other dogs can avoid this discomfort.

08.01.2022 Hands up if you have hay fever and need to take pills during spring Did you know dogs and cats can suffer from a similar problem in spring? Spring-summer is usually the time where animals suffering from seasonal allergies will flare-up. Common seasonal allergies include atopy (hay fever-like airborne allergy), contact dermatitis (allergic response due to direct contact of allergen), and flea allergy (allergic to fleas saliva). ... Symptoms of seasonal allergies are highly variable. Some individuals may only show mild localised symptoms such as conjunctivitis (weepy red eyes), sneezing, and licking of paws. Others can have more generalised symptoms of being itchy, scratching around the body. In cases with severe allergy, it can lead to a non-stop scratching, causing rash and bleeding of the skin. For mild allergy cases, antihistamine trial +/- topical cream is often recommended. However for most cases, where the itching and scratching has already caused a lot of self-trauma, often a short steroid/Apoquel course is required to stop the vicious itch cycle. Monthly flea prevention is also recommended to minimize irritation as most of the patients with allergies have sensitive skin. For more information regarding seasonal allergies, please contact your regular vet. #ypvets #YPVpetducate #springtime #seasonalallergies

04.01.2022 Spring has sprung and its baby bird season Its important to remember that its normal for baby birds to be seen on the ground, as fledglings learn to fly from the ground and not the nest. If you see a baby bird on the ground in your backyard: ... -wait up to an hour to ensure its parents are returning to feed, make sure no cats are nearby or other animals that may harm it. -If the parents do not return, something may have happened to them and the bird will need to be cared for. -birds without feathers should not be on the ground, if found please return to the nest asap. *only orphaned, unfeathered or injured birds should be rescued* Place the bird in a small container, lined with tissue sitting on a hot water bottle or glove filled with warm water (not hot water). Keep in a quiet place. Contact your local vet for experienced carers phone numbers and general advice. #ypvets #babybirdseason

03.01.2022 FIP in kittens and cats was previously a death sentence. Exciting recent advances have seen cases treated but vets have been unable to source legal meds. Fortunately pathways have opened, and feline advocate vets are able to diagnose and treat FIP kitties with good success rates so far. We are thankful to Dr Andrew at Walkerville Vet for allowing us to share this groundbreaking info with you and for his involvement in the movement to start treating FIP kittens and cats.

02.01.2022 Heat Stroke in pets With temperatures soaring in the mid 40s today and saturday its important to make sure we are keeping our pets cool to avoid heat stroke. To avoid heat stroke in our pets: ... -keep our animals inside out of the heat, if outside make sure they have access to fresh cool water and shaded areas. - Have kids wading pools with cool water available to keep cool in. - Provide ice in water bowls to cool down the water. - Freeze toys such as kongs with food inside, not only a tasty treat but to keep cool also. -Make up batches of doggy ice blocks with a treat in the middle and beef or chicken stock added to the water, to give on days like this one. - Avoid exercising your pets in hot weather, avoid hot sand, concrete and asphalt. - Never leave animals in the car, the temperature inside the car is 10C hotter than the outside temperature. - If travelling with pets, have them in the front seat or rear seat, avoid having them in the back of wagons etc, as the aircon doesn't usually reach that far in the car. **For rabbits and guinea pigs** - Put frozen water bottles, wrapped in a towel in hutches - Provide ceramic tiles ( cool to lay on) - To cool down wipe water onto their ears - Damp towels over hutches and runs (change regularly) - Bring the hutch inside in the cool, away from direct sunlight. Signs of heatstroke include: -Drooling, salivation -Restlessness -Red or pale gums -Increased heart rate -Vomiting or Diarrhoea - Diziness or staggering -Weakness -Seizures - Muscle Tremors - Collapse If you see any of these signs please contact your nearest clinic ASAP. #ypvets #heatstrokeinpets #YPVpetducate
