24.01.2022 Our 2021 Summer Program is now open for Enrolment! Summer Schools are a great way to maintain strength and condition over the long break. They allow students to expand the depth and breadth of their dance education without looming commitments of exams, performances, or even just homework from school. We have time-tabled a great mix of classes, from children's beginner classes to teen/adult beginner classes, to a pre-professional youth program. We encourage you to have a... browse and see what appeals to you. If you are uncertain about class levels or what to expect from a particular class, please don't hesitate to call or message. https://www.yvballet.com.au/summerprogram

23.01.2022 Congratulations Vangie!!! Achieving pointe-shoe status is such a special part of a dancer's journey and I couldn't be happier to share this news on Vangie's behalf - ON World Ballet Day no less! Vangie received her official physio sign-off yesterday.... Progressing to pointe work is often 6-12 month process, involving specific training of the feet, ankles and legs. Once a dancer has undertaken this training and is considered strong enough by their teachers, they are referred to a dance physiotherapist for an assessment. The assessment covers everything from foot/bone structure, to range of motion, to ankle and metatarsal strength. This year - 2020 - Vangie has just climbed and climbed that ladder of success. Since lockdown began, she has danced 5 days a week, sometimes doing two classes a day. She is so very deserving of this achievement. Vangie, I couldn't be happier for you Well done - let's go to Dance Art!

21.01.2022 Musical Monday In all the excitement and madness of Monday and announcements about restrictions, I nearly forgot to post this week's music challenge! Here it is, brought to us by Miss Marika - did you know she could play the piano?! I look forward to hearing which ballet it's from, and if you can, the name of the piece.... Last week's piece was the Dance of the Little Swans, from Swan Lake. Congrats to Kelly, Jo and Suzie who either guessed it or were on the right track! This is a video link to the Royal Ballet performing the full piece: https://youtu.be/0GsajWIF3ws Notice how the dancers are all a similar height? Very important for this particular number... if you have ever tried holding hands with someone significantly taller or shorter than you, you will immediately understand why!

21.01.2022 Merry Christmas Everyone! May your Christmas be filled with Grace, followed by lots of joyful cleaning up!!

15.01.2022 #FlashbackFriday I was 8 years old when I started ballet.... first ballet costume here which made me feel like a fairy! It was considered 'old' by some standards to start at 8 years, but I think I did okay in the end

14.01.2022 Musical Monday Last week's piece was 'The Nutcracker March' from 'The Nutcracker.' It is indeed the part where all the boys and girls dance as part of the opening in Act 1 Video link to the ballet here: https://youtu.be/tR_Z1LUDQuQ?t=325 This week, the piece is from a completely different ballet. Can you tell me the name of the Ballet and the piece of music? Hint: It's very, very famous and exhausting. Some of our Tuesday Seniors/Adults are likely to recognise the tune straight away!

13.01.2022 Hello Everyone! Well, *now* is usually the time of year I am running around like a headless chook, semi-chained to my sewing machine, frantically scouring the shops for a purple belt or a single blue flower or something equally elusive. Instead, we find ourselves three weeks out from the end of the term, with no theatre performance in sight. BUT, I am so thankful to be dancing in the same space together with the members of our dance community - teachers and students of al...l ages - who bring the best part of themselves to each and every class. I have also appreciated the reconnection with mums, dads, nannas, big brothers and sisters. As most of you probably know, I'm always up for a chat - doesn't have to be dance related! - so feel free to wave and come to say hello if you haven't already. We have welcomed some new students to our school over the past few weeks, and a special thank you goes out to all the students, teachers and parents who have helped those students and their families feel welcome. It's heart-warming to see inclusion happening outside the classroom as well as in it - parents talking to other parents, or adult students talking to junior students or parents before or after classes. Thank you to everyone for your support. With some restrictions still active for our industry, yet holding an awareness of how important it is for you to witness your dancer's journey, we would like to welcome family members to watch classes for the remaining three weeks of term. This is in lieu of our end-of -year performance. All our teachers are aware of how special it is for families to be an audience and for your dancers to perform. We hope that you will be able to visit your our classes over the next three weeks - once, twice, or all three times. Please check your inbox for specific information about arrival times and wellbeing protocols. Wishing everyone a smooth week ahead as we count down the days towards Christmas and a New Year. As always, please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Warm Regards, Nadia

13.01.2022 "The comeback is always greater than the setback."

11.01.2022 Whos in the mood for a fabulous foot challenge?! Its time to get those feet moving on this fabulous morning Let us know how you did

11.01.2022 Remember when it seemed impossible? learning how to stand in 1st or 3rd position; then learning fondus, frappes, and fouettes;... trying to balance on one leg in a retire position; then one day landing that first pirouette; feeling teary and nervous about stepping on stage; to feeling joy and elation at the prospect of stage lights and costumes; looking at pointe shoes; wearing your first pair of pointe shoes! No matter what age you are when you start dancing, we all start out as beginners. Trust your teachers. Bring your A-game. With a little patience and persistence, it will all start to fall into place. Pictured here is our lovely Miss Tia from several years ago. What once seemed impossible to Tia, is now well and truly her warm-up. #ThrowbackThursday #whatseemsimpossible #dancejourney #yvballet #dance #ballet #balletclass

11.01.2022 #WednesdayWisdom - This video from Mr Du at the Kirov Academy contains several little golden nuggets of ballet and stretching wisdom. Stretch for *your* body, taking into account your natural limitations and allowing for these. Choose Functional Flexibility - combine strength with stretch, so that you can actually *use* your flexibility in your dancing. Protect your knees, especially when over-stretching the back leg. Our knees were not designed to bend in certain ...directions! In addition, remember that growing bodies fluctuate in their flexibility and strength. Every time your body has a growth spurt, the muscles and tendons need time to adjust. Stress and tension can also play a role in inhibiting our muscle range. Go gently and safely, and know your limitations. Functional flexibility takes time and patience. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=861053264378104
