25.01.2022 Kymberlee So this morning's little share time about their time in lock down had us listening to foundation student Kymberlee describe a stupendous adventure that happened to her where unicorns were the star turn. Later, in my 1:1 with KF, we wrote a song before doing maths and reading a story about the solar system. It goes like this:... [C] Unicorn, unicorn, can't go to [F] school Unicorn, unicorn, lockdown [C] rule. Piper, our resident songwriter, thought it a little short, when I played it for her later. But since she had no song of her own ----- ?

25.01.2022 THE FIRST FIVE DAYS OF REMOTE LEARNING This from our private FB page Zeerust Primary School Parents. I have not included parent comments and I have obscured identities. ...Continue reading

24.01.2022 This looks handy.

23.01.2022 I am starting to work out staffing for next year and with numbers as low as ours, every child counts. If you are considering Zeerust Primary School in Australia, not the South African one. Please make contact very soon. We hope to start transition from the Melbourne Cup week.

22.01.2022 WE WERE ON THE TOOLS TODAY Making little cubbies. We will be learning about reinforcement soon.

22.01.2022 From our private Families page: FRIDAY OCTOBER 6 The children learnt something about our planet. ... After a quick viewing of Mia's slide-show, finally, the day came for Benchmark #2: Tell me what you know about Planet Earth. Let's count those facts. Now let's count the number of 'facts' in Benchmark #1. Do you know more? Yes. A little more - some, twice as much - some, three times as much or more - three students: Congratulations Audrey, Mia and Scarlett. With the completion of Planet Earth we turn our attention to Gold and, to escape the high reliance on screens, we are going old-school with worksheets and, gasp, non-fiction books designed for children. Have to say that our morning fitness is starting to take on the look and feel of a serious gymnasium. It's certainly helping Kymberlee to count. Speaking of our little prep, today she showed me what chess could really be like. Why have only two horsies (knights) when three would be better. Lose a piece, then go to the box of pieces and get reinforcements. Lose the queen, not a problem, lose a horsie - catastrophe! And all those rules about how the pieces move what nonsense. Do you you know that in Kymberlee chess, the horsey can carry other pieces around the board. Teaching chess to a six year old is challenging. She might have something with the reinforcements idea. Thanks for the ice-cream cake, Lizzie.

22.01.2022 Learn Maths Club were pleased to welcome us back to on-site learning and we made up this little song of appreciation with about 1 minute of preparation.

20.01.2022 Farewell, Mrs. Glenda Telford. After a very, very long time - you are putting away the chalk and starting a well-earned retirement. Thank you for your service.

20.01.2022 This page is a little quiet these days and this is why. We have two closed group FB pages on the go, one replaces the hardcopy newsletter and the other, contains lots of teaching and learning stuff with the move to remote learning.

20.01.2022 WE HAD A WELLBEING DAY Because we thought the kids were getting a bit dotty. Not much happened in the way of reading, writing and arithmetic today but we did a power of work on these panels for the city's Present Box Project. ... It was a very pleasant day

19.01.2022 From our private Zeerust Families Page: FRIDAY OCT 16 Three things stand out about today:... 1. Singing our version of the song 'Hey Baby' accompanying ourselves on ukuleles. 2. All the kids playing red rover at lunchtime. 3. Introducing drawing to scale and proportion to our little designers. Some of them, really got the concept. We also did the usual too. Have a good weekend.

18.01.2022 TWO DATES TO REMEMBER Monday 25 May is a student-free day Tuesday 26 May ALL Zeerust Primary School students may return to school Small schools, like Zeerust, have been given the authority to make a decision about their students returning to school that reflects their context. And so, unlike larger places, all grades are welcome to return to school on Tuesday the 26th, not just the F-2s allowed in bigger contexts. ... The end of the tunnel is here. A couple of more weeks to go; unless things change drastically. So maintain that social distancing, hand cleaning and the like. Thank you all, so much for your work. See more

13.01.2022 AUDREY AND ISABELLA EARN THEIR TERM 3 CERTIFICATE FROM LEARN MATHS CLUB Every week, even during Covid 19 lock-down, the girls logged onto LMC for a bit of 1:1 tutoring. We couldn't give them their certificates until we came back to on-site learning. Congratulations, girls.

12.01.2022 Schools in regional and rural Victoria All schools will continue with current arrangements until the start of Term 4. Students enrolled at Zeerust Primary School will return to on-site learning from Monday 5 October.

12.01.2022 It was Piper's birthday last week. Happy birthday, Piper.

11.01.2022 Thank goodness we aren't dealing with teenagers.

11.01.2022 We went down a mine shaft and up a tall tower all in the one day. We went on an excursion to the Central Deborah Goldmine in Bendigo as a part of our study of gold. We had a great day.

09.01.2022 WEDNESDAY, JULY 22 A couple of highlights The photographers came and did their work and this year we have gone for a more informal whole-school photo. I think it might be good. Today, the children spent $369 on 10 science kits that will let them investigate light. https://www.madaboutscience.com.au/s/science-wiz-light.html... So thanks to Audrey, Piper and Isabella who each identified the above kit. And there may be more coming thanks to Scarlett. I just have to see if there is an Australian distributor. I told the children we had $2000 in the budget and that we needed at least 10 kits. I think they enjoyed the challenge of spending school money. See more

09.01.2022 TRANSITION FROM KINDERGARTEN TO ZEERUST PRIMARY SCHOOL In normal times incoming preps would start transitioning into Zeerust during Term 4. This would mean coming to Zeerust Primary School at least once a week over a period of 6 to 8 weeks. It would also mean that I go and visit the children at their kindergarten and catch up with their kinder teacher too. ... It may be that we can do this again this year or that we might not because we'll still be in lock-down. If we are in lock-down then we will need to do this remotely. I am ordering laptops for the incoming students that I know about. Most are the younger siblings of current students. What I will need to find out soon is what kindergartens the 2021 preps attend now.

08.01.2022 The excursions continue: this one was relatively straight-forward. We are learning about plants this term and thought a quick trip to the Australian Botanical Garden at Shepparton was in order. It was quite windy.

05.01.2022 STUDENT GOALS Every student managed to achieve at least one of their goals for this semester. Congratulations

05.01.2022 This is an annual event that usually takes place in Term 2. I wasn't sure how we would manage it while learning remotely so it was postponed. The little guy is a prep and he believes banks will give you money. He already had the money in a different billfold.

04.01.2022 Just 10 minutes north of Shepparton!

03.01.2022 Eleanor's short story (grade 2) Storm Fly Storm Fly is a deadly nadder. She is very dangerous. Very hungry too. No one will mess with her when she is hungry. ... Storm Fly went fishing at the ocean. She caught two. Then another deadly nadder appeared out of nowhere. What is your name? said Storm Fly. My name is Storm, said Storm. What is your name? My name is Storm Fly, said Storm Fly. Oh do you want a fish? Yes please, said Storm. Ok here you go, said Storm Fly. Thank you, said Storm. Yum. Can we go to my nest? Ok, said Storm Fly. Come on follow me!! said Storm. Coming, said Storm Fly. Don’t be slow, said Storm. Ok okay, said Storm Fly. I’m coming. We’re here, said Storm. Wow your nest is very big and lots of room to fit me, you and 3 babies, said Storm Fly. They had been together for 67 days. They had three babies, their names were Snoops, Snoopy and Fire. 02.01.2022 Our two grade 4s were recently recognised by Maths Club for some great work. Well done, girls.

01.01.2022 UPDATE I am supposed to be riding my Honda Goldwing somewhere far away from here. I guess we all wish we were doing something else right now, but we are not. I'm sorry that I have not been able to share too much with you but as you can imagine the goal posts keep shifting all the time, and only now do I think I'm up to speed enough to indicate how we might go from here. #1: Not every school will be operating in the same way as us. We have not been given a one-size-fits-all ...Continue reading

01.01.2022 Audrey's short story (grade 4) The dragon family It was a nice morning on the angry volcano. ... Hmm what do I want to do today? thought Pinkie. How about a walk? said Bluey flying in from the sky. Who are you? replied Pinkie. I’m Bluey, said Bluey. Oh I’m Pinkie, said Pinkie. Hello Pinkie, said Bluey. Hi, replied Pinkie happily. A walk sounds nice. Good let’s go, replied Bluey. A little while later they got to a cliff. Do you want to play catch? asked Bluey. Yes we can use this rock, said Pinkie holding a big rock. Yay let’s play, replied Bluey. A little while later the 2 got tired so they decide to have a nap. 1 hour later they woke up. Bluey yawns. Pinkie yawns. That was a nice nap, I’m hungry are you? asked Pinkie. Yes I am let’s go hunt, replied Bluey. It had been ten minutes they had killed a dinosaur that they found and they ate it. That was yummy, said Pinkie. Yes it was, Replied Bluey. Do you want to go to that cliff on the volcano, Asked Pinkie. Yes please, said Bluey. So they had been together for a few months and had 2 eggs that hatched into baby dragons named Plum and Laver. They are about 10 weeks old. One day Laver went missing. Where is Laver? said Pinkie. He must have snuck out at night, said Bluey. I hope he hasn’t gone somewhere he shouldn’t have, said Pinkie nervously. I will go look for him I’ll be back soon with Laver, replied Bluey looking brave. So off went Bluey to find Laver. 10 min later he returned with Laver on his back. Laver never run away like that you have to ask to leave the nest, said Pinkie in relief. It had been 3 months and Plum and Laver where in flying lessons. Laver and Plum flow in the air. I’m flying, said both of them. Weee, said Plum Yay, said Laver. Now that you can fly we can go to the top of the angry volcano, who wants to go to the top of volcano? asked Pinkie. Me, me, me, me, me, said Laver. Me please, replied Plum. So they went to the top of the volcano and roasted marshmallows. Yummy marshmallows, said all of them. They were a happy family from now on.
