12.01.2022 The purple line........... Vaginal examinations are embedded in our birth culture, and it's so hard to get away from the concept that examinations don't tell yo...u when your baby will be born. It's also a source of really worry, which is why it often comes up in questions on my classes. However many women who are uncomfortable with vaginal examinations, smear tests or have a history of sexual trauma, don't know that they can decline this, or that there are other ways of assessing progress in labour. One of these many indicators is the purple line. Research shows that over 70% of women have a line that runs up from the anus to the coccyx during labour. This image is an approximation, but is a clear indicator progress. As a therapist I see vaginal examinations as a psychological as well as physical intervention, this means that we can have a physical response based on our thoughts on feelings in this situation which can slow labour down. It can also cause a sense of hopelessness if things aren't happening as quickly as you like, which in turn can create anxiety. If you have done hypnobirthing you will know the impact of anxiety on birth. Always remember that "your cervix is not a crystal ball", progress is much more complex than that. I've popped a brilliant blog by Rachel Reed inThe purple line........... https://www.google.com//09/14/the-assessment-of-progr/amp/ See more

07.01.2022 Wanting a waterbirth at the moment? Not sure how COVID-19 influences your choice? This great summary by @mindfulmidwife should help... Recently I have been hear...ing reports from midwives and pregnant women about hospitals closing their birthing pools and not allowing women to use them at this time amid fears about whether it’s safe in light of COVID-19 Will the water contribute to the spread of the virus? Expert researchers at Oxford Brooks University have brought together research on the use of water immersion during the current global pandemic. The statements made are really reassuring for women wanting to use water. Key points below taken from the extremely wonderful @drsarawickham Water immersion for healthy women is associated with a number of beneficial maternal outcomes with no known adverse risks to the neonate. COVID-19 is not a waterborne virus, therefore the water environment dilutes respiratory droplets and faecal contamination potential. In the Coronavirus context, water immersion presents a lower risk of contamination risk for Midwives compared with bed birth because it promotes the use of social distancing without interrupting normal midwifery care. The birthing pool environment presents a natural barrier between the woman and her Midwife. Water immersion for labour and or birth should be supported and encouraged as an effective method of analgesia. Burns E, Feeley C, Venderlaan J et al. (2020). 01.01.2022 Sharing an update on hynobirthing classes :) I am running mindful mamma hypnobirthing sessions on ZOOM as one to one sessions for couples. - This is formatted as 4 x 1 hour sessions ( may be a bit longer) at the group fee of $295 per couple - The fee includes the usual full resource folder and 9 track mindful mamma course MP3's for home practice. Both can be mailed or shared via drop box. These sessions can be planned at your convenience and my availability. I am still r...unning the regular monthly class on a face to face basis but limited to two couples per session - this gives us more than adequate space around each other, in a large airy studio with high ceilings. We have plenty of hand santizer and are following all the safe practice guidelines. Dates for these sessions May 19th , June 14th and July 5th. If there is demand over and above 2 couples I can look at putting on extra dates. Wishing you all peace and ease with your pregnancy at this difficult time - now more than ever a helpful time to learn life skills for your mind and for birth - namaste See more
