21.01.2022 As Victorian manufacturing returns to new ways of working, there will be changes to the working environment that can affect your workers health. Fatigued worker...s may experience increased irritability, poor concentration, reduced hand-eye coordination, or slower reaction times. These factors can increase the chance of error and workplace injury. To find out more about preventing fatigue in the workplace, visit https://www.worksafe.vic.gov.au//work-related-fatigue-guid

15.01.2022 'The country's peak union body wants businesses and workers to take mental health hazards in the workplace as seriously as physical safety concerns, as a Productivity Commission report shows mental-health related sick days cost up to $10 billion per year. Australian Council of Trade Unions assistant secretary Liam O'Brien said workplaces have been the "big missing piece" in discussions about mental health.' -SMH-

14.01.2022 This morning on ABC Coffs Harbour, a farmer claimed that fruit pickers get conditions similar to other industries with piece rates. This sounded good however i...t is simply incorrect. The majority of industries with piece rates have a minimum wage guarantee. It is only the farming industry and one other industry that doesn't. Here are some basic rights that most other piece workers have, which fruit pickers don’t: - A guaranteed minimum award base rate; - Set standard working hours; - Certainty of employment through fixed term contacts for a fixed periods; and - Food & accommodation provided. The farming industry has been left unchecked for too long. It's time that farmers had a wake up call and started paying their workers fairly. The AWU has launched a campaign to ensure all farm workers are paid a fair piece rate above minimum wage. Support the campaign here: https://www.awu.net.au/campaigns/fair-piece-rates/

08.01.2022 4000 of us are killed by asbestos-related diseases every year. Despite about one third of homes built between the 1940s and 1990 containing asbestos, workers co...ntinue to be put in unsafe working environments with inadequate PPE and without sufficient knowledge to avoid the unnecessary risk of exposure. Find out more about what you can do to avoid this deadly material as we close out Asbestos Awareness Month at https://asbestosawareness.com.au

08.01.2022 13 years ago, tireless social activist and anti-asbestos campaigner Bernie Banton AM died peacefully in his sleep. Bernie was the face of the major political an...d legal campaign to win compensation for thousands of people who contracted asbestos related illnesses after working for James Hardie or after being exposed to James Hardie Industries' products. Bernie fought this fight while diagnosed with asbestosis and also Asbestos Related Pleural Disease (ARPD). Bernie’s death coincides with Asbestos Awareness Week, and may he remind us all of the importance of workplace health and safety and the duty of employers, especially around hazardous materials such as asbestos and silica. Bernie Banton's legacy as a powerful advocate and strong voice for workers will not be forgotten. He fought for justice for the victims of asbestos - and the fight will continue. Vale Bernie Banton AM. 13 October 1946 - 27 November 2007

01.01.2022 a member of the AWU had some extremely kind words to say about being part of the union and his positive experience whilst working on a major construction project in Melbourne. Thank you for maintaining the core ideals of the union movement, without which, it would be every man for himself and I believe work conditions would degrade to a level that I don't even want to think about. Being in a union is essential. We are #StrongerTogether
