24.01.2022 Just like today’s horticulturalists, October in Darebin in 1954 meant - time to get your tomatoes in! As well as articles providing advice for the home gardener, local businesses advertised plants for sale in the Northcote Leader’s Home and Garden page. If you enjoy these #throwbackthursday posts there are many more historic articles and advertisements to discover in our digitised local newspapers on Darebin Heritage: heritage.darebinlibraries.vic.gov.au/newspapers

24.01.2022 Our last step towards COVID normal restrictions! We are very happy to announce that more people can now visit Northcote, Reservoir AND Preston Libraries and stay for longer periods of time. Whooo! In line with the easing of restrictions by the Victorian Government, the Last Step Towards COVID Normal sees us replace Express Library and Click and Collect. This means:... * Many more people can visit each branch at once * Visitors can stay for up to three hours * There will only be one queue to enter the library Physical distancing, hand hygiene and contact tracing requirements remain in place and you must wear a mask inside the library (unless exempted by law). Libraries will continue to have reduced opening hours and will shut for a lunchtime clean. Please understand that due to the higher number of staff needed to operate library branches in a COVID-safe manner, we are currently unable to offer evening hours or offer services at Fairfield Library. We will update this page when this situation changes. Visit our website for more info: https://tinyurl.com/y4tbftck

19.01.2022 This #ThrowbackThursday we continue our local history walk in Darebin, exploring places along High Street, from Northcote to Preston. Our next stop is the Merri Creek bridge, High Street Northcote. Before the bridge was built in 1874, the road descended the banks of the creek and was considered a dangerous crossing. A number of people had drowned while attempting to cross after heavy rains. Five years after this photograph was taken during Northcote’s fifty-year jubilee, the... bridge over the Merri was the site of a robbery. On Thursday 2 September 1938 Mr Frederick Sherry drove his car from a Northcote bank towards his factory in Clifton Hill, delivering the payroll to his employees. He was ambushed by two robbers who ran him off the road and shot him dead on the Clifton Hill side of the bridge. Both men served lengthy jail terms for their crimes in what became known as the Payroll Murder. As a result of this case, armoured cars were introduced for payroll deliveries. Visit Darebin Heritage to find out more about the 1933 Northcote Jubiliee (https://heritage.darebinlibraries.vic.gov.au//Northcote%20 ), and the 1938 Payroll Murder (https://heritage.darebinlibraries.vic.gov.au/article/980) . These stories and others about local places are featured in the History on High walking tour developed in partnership with our Local History team and Council’s Creative Culture & Events team, as part of the Darebin FUSE festival. If you’re inspired to take the walking tour you can download flyers or listen to the audio here: www.fusedarebin.com.au/whats-on/events/history-on-high/

17.01.2022 Meet Christian, our Multicultural and Diversity Librarian here to give you an insight into what goes on behind the scenes at Darebin Libraries! "After the temporary closure of our library branches I began running our Conversation Café sessions online, so people could continue to practice speaking English and make new friends from the comfort and safety of home. I’ve enjoyed seeing some familiar faces and also meeting new people, I always learn so much myself during these sess...ions. It was also the best regular social interaction I had during lockdown!" Conversation Café sessions are held weekly on Mondays 10-11am and Fridays 9.30am-11.30am by Zoom video meeting and are guided by a library staff member. Find out at www.darebinlibraries.vic.gov.au/regularevents/ We hope you've enjoyed this insight into what our staff were up to during our library closure. 16.01.2022 Latrobe City Libraries and East Gippsland Shire Library supported by Penguin Random House are hosting an online Author Talk next Tuesday the 17th of November with Sue Smethurst. Sue will be discussing her book The Freedom Circus which tells the remarkable true story of the Horowitz family, and the circus that saved their lives during the Holocaust. To register to attend this free event, please visit Eventbrite at the link below! Reminiscent of The Greatest Showman and Schindl...er's List, The Freedom Circus will have you gripped to the very last page and is an important new chapter in Australia's Holocaust history. It is an amazing true story of hope, love, persecution and the power of laughter. This Author Talk is part of a series of events supported by Penguin Random House in collaboration with public libraries around Victoria. By generously offering the time of their authors and sharing these talks digitally, Penguin are providing opportunities for these authors to speak to an audience they might not otherwise be able to reach. Authors are not always able to visit each state on their tours, let alone the regional areas, so this is a unique and special chance for book lovers to see their favourite authors speak no matter where they live. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for more Penguin Random House Author Talks coming soon!

16.01.2022 We've got a special good news story to brighten up your Friday! Alphington Community Centre's ‘Blind date with a book’ recommenced on Friday 6 November, and will be running weekly on Fridays outside Three Locals on Station Street in Fairfield! This genius idea involves a stand being set up in a public place where the community can come and pick up a FREE book. Darebin Libraries staff worked with Alphington Community Centre to donate second-hand library books towards this pro...ject. The Community Centre asked our libraries for 50 books, but we were able to donate almost 250 to this wonderful initiative! To add a bit of mystery and excitement, the identity of each of the books has been concealed by brown paper, and the only clue to what may be inside is in the form of a tag with a small hint. It’s almost like Christmas has come early! This project is a collaboration between Alphington Community Centre, Darebin Libraries and Fairfield Books, with the aim of activating our streets and public places and making them feel neighbourhoodly and friendly, arty and interesting. This initiative has been funded by a Darebin Business grant as part of Darebin Council’s broader COVID-19 recovery program. If you’re a Fairfield local doing your shopping, hopefully you’ll come across the stand and be able to grab YOURSELF a ‘blind date’ for the weekend.

11.01.2022 Phoebe's Friday Flick His Girl Friday (1940) is a classic screwball rom-com and undeniably one of the best films of the golden era of Hollywood. Starring Cary Grant as a job obsessed newspaper editor, Walter, and Rosalind Russell as Hildy, his ex-wife and former employee. Hilarity ensues as Walter finds out Hildy is set to marry an insurance salesman and takes it upon himself to attempt to sabotage their impending nuptials with the lure of one final story. The incredibly ...witty dialogue is as fast paced as any grand slam match, carried out with the ease and impeccable timing of two Hollywood legends such as Russell and Grant. If you haven't yet had the pleasure it's sure to become an all time favourite! Like what you hear? You can watch this film for FREE on Kanopy.
