21.01.2022 Does this look like a 'hot' or 'runaway' horse to you? Riley has always been described as what people would refer to as a "hot" thoroughbred. He required a drop nose band to keep his mouth closed and a running martingale to keep his head down. At the start of this session with Riley, he was just that. He had what I call a giraffe neck with his head up high, he was rushing forward and when asked to slow down he would open his mouth and run into the pressure. ... This is what I would describe as "emotional". The unwanted behaviours are driven by fear and confusion from the horse. With Riley, we set up the task to allow him to choose to slow down, rather than Tegan controlling his speed. Every time Riley rushed off, Tegan would spiral down to a tight small circle. This made it hard work for Riley to rush forward. It was easier for Riley to slow down than continue at the same speed. Once he made the choice to slow down, Tegan would allow him to go back on a larger circle and leave him be. If he began to rush again, she would repeat the exercise. At no time during this exercise, did Tegan use two reins to slow Riley down. It is a loose, one rein exercise. In a short amount of time Riley began to relax, became calm and was connected with Tegan. He began to stretch and keep a consistent tempo in the trot. All these changes happened in one just session. I think the smile on Tegan's face says it all. "Still can't get over Riley and that feel.. so much more connection. ...The weekend and time spent with the horses has helped me calm and settle in myself. A huge change compared to Friday when I was feeling burnt out. You not only help horses.. you help people Ally!" - Tegan Buckley #dustyacreshorsemanship #calmconnectedconfident #relaxedhorse #longandlow #confidenthorse #confidentrider @ Kingston On Murray

19.01.2022 Confidence is a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it gets. That is true for both horse and rider. 10.01.2022 "Never knock the curiosity out of a young horse." - Tom Dorrance Curiosity is an important quality to encourage in your horse (or this case chickens ) I encourage my horses to be curious of instead of being fearful. As you can see with the chickens, it requires patience and letting them approach and retreat as they need. It then becomes their choice to investigate. Some times it requires encouragement or motivation. In this case, for the chickens, it was food.... For your horse it might be you just ask him to try, but remember to leave him alone if he is making an effort. After all we want his curiosity to cause him to want to have a look. The aim is not to force, but set up a puzzle and wait for them to figure it out. It requires a dash of encouragement and a whole lot of patience for you to help your horse become confident. #dustyacreshorsemanship #confidenthorse

09.01.2022 Glorious day for a ride to the river on this stunning boy #trainingonthetrail #dustyacreshorsemanship #calmconfidentconnected

09.01.2022 Have you lost confidence with your horse? Feeling like you are taking one step forward and two steps back? Having trouble getting a relaxed and responsive horse? Feeling like you have tried everything but still not meeting your goals or have true connection with your horse? Ready to think outside the box and try some new approaches?... Hi, Im Ally from Dusty Acres Horsemanship. Im based in the Riverland, and offer one on one lessons, coaching, horse training and colt starting. My clients describe me as being approachable and not at all intimidating but rather empathetic and responsive towards reading horses and riders to find the best solution or training tools for their partnership. Dont hesitate to get in contact with me to book in a lesson and/or to discuss some of the things you would like to work on with your horse.

08.01.2022 Training your horse: It’s a piece of cake. I often see clients who are struggling to achieve their goals. I come along and say ok, let’s get back to the basics. This is the very last thing they want to focus on. Mentally it is hard to think about going back to the beginning. We get so set on the goal, that going back to the foundation feels like we are moving backwards, and we end up disappointed and feeling like a failure. ... This is where my cake analogy comes in. You have already put the cake together, but it needs improvement before you can ice and decorate it. Your cake is a little too dry. It’s flopped in the middle and stuck to the bottom of the pan. The only way to improve your cake is to go back and refine the ingredients and the method. You are not starting again from scratch; you are refining the ingredients to improve the outcome. Many people do not realize that when it comes to training your horse, you will always go back, revisit and refresh the basics. They are the essential building blocks of your horsemanship. So, let’s say your goal is to have your horse relaxed and collected at the canter. This is your cake. Let’s look at the ingredients necessary to achieve this. 1. Can you ride your horse at a walk, trot, and canter on a loose rein? 2. Can you transition up and down through your gaits with your seat (no reins)? 3. Is your horse moving forward freely with relaxation? 4. Does vertical flexion block your horse's forward movement? 5. Does your horse get tight and rush into the canter transition? 6. Is your horse holding brace and tension in their body? These are just some of the elements that need to be in place to achieve a balanced, collected and relaxed canter. If you have holes or weak areas in the foundation of your horse's training, the desired result cannot be achieved with excellence. Break your horsemanship goal into manageable pieces. Look at them like ingredients of the cake; if you fix the ingredients and method, the cake just happens! Your mindset about the journey is what is important. Fall in love with the process rather than the outcome. It will keep you motivated and moving in the right direction.

02.01.2022 Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome Arthur Ashe New Year's resolutions are a great way to kickstart goal setting for your horsemanship. A resolution, after all, is a decision to do something different to bring about a positive change. ... As we greet the new year, I challenge you to let go of what has been and embrace the journey, that is yet to come. Let go of the expectations from ourselves and others, that do not serve our journey. Relax and remind ourselves that moving forward is about progress, not perfection. Allow ourselves and our horses, to develop as we are ready, not before. Give ourselves permission to make mistakes, then enjoy learning from them. Focus on the journey, not the destination. Everything great is built on relaxation and moving freely forward. Happy New Year Ally Thomas Dusty Acres Horsemanship Calm-Confident-Connected
