25.01.2022 Good opportunity for artistic young people to take part in our ongoing project at the Bullsbrook Recycling Centre.

25.01.2022 Richard at the Landcare stall for the Bullsbrook Country Fair 2021. Thank you Sophie for being there to help out. It was a good day. Thanks to all who visited. Hopefully see you at our community planting days later this year.

23.01.2022 Fantastic effort by everyone involved, great turnout by the Bullsbrook Landcare team .

23.01.2022 A walk along the northern section of the Bullsbrook Bridle Trail this morning, Jess Road to Meadow Brook Ramble. The revegetation plants are starting to come out in flower, Acacia drummondii, and Hakea bucculenta, and the rain is bringing out the fungi. The only negative is the number of Rainbow Lorrikeets in the area. A couple of years ago it was hard to see/hear one, now they are in flocks up to 30 birds. Very noticeable with their distinctive screeching and chatter. An introduced bird from the eastern states, they don't care if the borders are closed or not !!

22.01.2022 Some interesting fungi along the Bullsbrook Bridle Trail this afternoon .

21.01.2022 Thank you to all of our volunteer planters today - it was a chilly start but worth the effort! Jackie, Mark, Maureen, Jemma, Sharyn, Krystal, Paige, Alison, Sophie, Ewan, Stewart, Michelle, Richard and Anne. 1700 plants in the ground to keep the Bridle Trail environment healthy. Your help was much appreciated.

21.01.2022 As the cooler days are now upon us, reptiles like bobtails are heading into brumation. Brumation is a form of hibernation for reptiles. Its an important part... of their natural behaviour where they search for a warm, safe hiding place to rest until the warmer weather arrives. During this time their metabolism slows down allowing them to survive the cold winter months. What to do if you uncover a bobtail during the winter months? While the goal is to leave the bobtail alone to get back to brumation, you could do a quick assessment to check if its in a healthy condition: does it have a big, thick tail like the one shown in the photo? Bobtail tails store fat, allowing the animal to go for many months without food. A thin tail would indicate that the bobtail is in an unhealthy condition and may be suffering from illness. are their eyes and nostrils free from discharge? Bobtails that are suffering from bobtail flu often have a runny nose and eyes much like humans suffering from the flu! If the bobtail appears to be in good condition (nice thick tail, clear eyes and nose, no apparent injuries), is in a safe location and safe from predators, please let the bobtail get back to what it does best during these months - brumation. However, if you find a bobtail that is in need of care, please contact your nearest wildlife rescue centre for more information

17.01.2022 Hi. I have been seeing a fair number of these snails along the Bullsbrook Bridle Trail recently, especially on damp mornings.I have reported it on the Pest app, this is the response. I believe this is a green snail, Cornu apertus (Sigmurethra: Helicidae). The green snail has been introduced to Western Australia from the Mediterranean region. It is of limited distribution in Western Australia and is of biosecurity concern elsewhere in Australia. It can significantly damage a wide range of plants when in high populations and will bury into soil during dry periods. The pest is spread through the movement of infested host materials such as nursery stock (eg potted plants), turf or harvested fruit and vegetables.

17.01.2022 Announcing our new 'Adopt a Cocky Nest' project! There are three species of threatened Black-Cockatoo in south western Australia, Baudin’s, Carnaby’s and Forest... Red-tailed. Loss of nesting hollows is one of the major reasons for their decline. Artificial hollows have been found to be successful in replacing lost natural hollows, particularly for Carnaby’s. However, it is critical that the correct location is chosen. A new partnership between BirdLife Australia, leading developer Hesperia and Carnaby’s Crusaders is looking to change that with the installation of more artificial nests (tubes) in known breeding areas. Donations are now sought for people to ‘adopt’ a nest ($350) or half a nest ($175). Expressions of interest can be made by land owners in the Chittering/Bullsbrook/Bindoon area to host tubes at https://forms.gle/BTNbDLmswJyK6wnb8. Importantly, this includes some areas affected by the Wooroloo fire, which burnt through thousands of hectares of black-cockatoo foraging, nesting and roosting habitat. Donor costs are kept to a minimum via generous funding support from Hesperia, which covers the costs of installation by Carnaby’s Crusaders, BirdLife staff time and site surveys. The nests will be surveyed annually using ‘Cocky Cam’, a telescopic pole with wireless camera. Results will then be sent to both donors and hosts. It is hoped that this initiative will boost breeding rates for Carnaby’s for years to come. To donate go to https://cocky-nests-2021.raisely.com/ Photo: Adam Peck

13.01.2022 Well done once again to our team of planters today at the BB Recycling Centre. Great effort by Chittering Landcare, TRONOX, Brad Thompson City of Swan Enviro and of course the instigator of this project, Friends of the BB Recycling Centre (Bullsbrook LC) Thank you to City of Swan for installing the terrific fence which will hopefully protect the majority of plants from being eaten by Kangaroos. Thanks for our own merry band of Jackie, Mark, Ewan, Sophie, Maureen, Isobel, Wen...dy, Michelle, Cate, Kevin, Richard and Anne. Many thanks for your support for a really good planting season. Hopefully we will get lots more lovely rain to give the plants a good chance of survival. Till next year............. See more

12.01.2022 If you're heading away these holidays, it's safest to leave your dog at home. We regularly carry out baiting across conservation land around the State to con...trol introduced predators such as foxes and feral cats, and these baits can be very attractive to pets. Baiting is an important part of our wildlife recovery efforts to protect threatened native species. Without the use of baits, the risk of extinction would be increased for many species such as the numbat, woylie, western swamp tortoise and western ground parrot. Find out more about the Western Shield wildlife recovery program and the areas we bait www.pws.dbca.wa.gov.au/westernshield Or to find out you where can take your dog safely, visit www.exploreparks.dbca.wa.gov.au/know/pets-parks

10.01.2022 Richard and I met with Dean from Carnaby's Crusaders this morning to assess the Bullsbrook Bridle Trail as a suitable location for some Cocky nesting tubes to be installed along the trail. It's looking very promising so hopefully we will have some nesting sites ready for this season. 145 Carnaby's were counted for the Cocky Count last weekend which is great. It would be very satisfying to know that our Landcare group is helping this beautiful species to continue to breed. Our continued reveg will also provide food for the birds. Watch this space for further news. Cheers Anne J

09.01.2022 This month marks the start of the Nyoongar season Kambarang, the second spring. The Nyoongar calendar is made up of six different seasons - Birak, Bunuru, Dj...eran, Makuru, Djilba and Kambarang. These seasons can be long or short, depending on what's happening and changing around us rather than specific dates on a calendar. Kambarang is known as the season of birth, it's a transformational time of the year where flowers are exploding around us! With warmer weather on the horizon, reptiles will start to come out of hibernation and birds will be out and about protecting their nests and babies. Kambarang is a great time to get out into nature and appreciate the beautiful colours. - Nuytsia floribunda / WA Christmas Tree.

08.01.2022 C10442293 Bullsbrook Landcare has now registered for CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE. So any time you take your bottles and cans to the Containers for Change receival centre you can support the local environment by nominating Bullsbrook Landcare as the refund recipient. Following the recent Wooroloo Bushfire, many old trees used as nesting sites by Black Cockatoos have been lost, so the first project we are going to support through Containers for Change is the purchase and placement of Black Cockatoo nesting boxes. More news to follow as this project takes off. Containers for Change ID C10442293

08.01.2022 Thank you to all of our volunteers who did a terrific job in the first stage of Ki It Brook rehabilitation. Thank you to Okeland Communities and Bullsbrook Landcare for providing morning tea; the Greedy Gecko Coffee van produced delicious coffee to recharge our energy. Good job done with a lovely positive community spirit.

06.01.2022 This Saturday, 18th July, Bullsbrook Landcare has organised a revegetation planting day on the ki-it Monger Brook in Bullsbrook. The revegetation site is part of the Okeland Kingsford development. A recent Facebook post by Colin Butland and shared to the Bullsbrook and Surrounds Residents Action Group page may have given the impression that this revegetation site is on land that been contaminated by PFAS. The actual location of the revegetation site is East of the Great Nort...hern Highway, and upstream of the RAAF Airbase (Pearce). A correction to the post on the BSRAG would be appreciated. 03.01.2022 Today the Morrison Government introduced another new bill to reform our national nature laws. Join our webinar! Is it the reform we need to set up strong en...vironmental standards and an independent regulator to protect nature? No, it’s not! But what it does give us is a chance to keep working to get stronger nature laws. The bill introduced today joins another bill that was introduced last year that aims to hand off environmental powers to the states. Together, as they are, they don’t take environmental protection forward; in fact they weaken already weak laws. But today’s bill does give us the foundation framework for national environmental standards and an independent regulator to oversee decision-making that impacts the environment, two things we don’t have right now. Join our webinar at 12.30pm Eastern time March 17th to hear what you can do to deliver better laws from this bill https://www.actforbirds.org/nature-laws-webinar-2021 Another important piece of news from today is that there will be a Senate Inquiry into the bill, and that means there’s a better chance to amend it to give us stronger national standards and a proper independent regulator with teeth. It is a tentative, faltering start towards what’s needed but these bills won’t get the job done. They are not going to prevent extinctions. Australia’s birds need something better. So. Let’s put our shoulders to the wheel again and get our precious birds the laws they need. Register to join our webinar, where we’ll go through what’s on the table and our strategy to get the best outcome we can! https://www.actforbirds.org/nature-laws-webinar-2021 Swift Parrot by Leigh Pieterse

01.01.2022 This plant is in flower along the Bullsbrook Bridle Trail at the moment. It is a Gastrolobium spinosum, Prickly Poison. The Gastrolobium species is deadly to introduced species of mammals such as sheep and cattle if they eat the leaves. Killed a lot of the early settlers livestock, native animals have a natural immunity to the poison. The poison has been synthesised and is called 1080. It is used to control foxes and feral cats.
