"Over the past three years, local Landcare volunteers have been collecting seeds from the rainforest and have painstakingly propagated more than 10,000 trees to be replanted across the region. "We get the seed, we put it in the seed trays on the heated benches over winter and then it is misted and irrigated...," said Milton Rural Landcare volunteer Sybille Davidson." 23.01.2022 Echonetdaily spoke to Dr Nathan Kesteven, President of Whian Whian Landcare, about the potential of the Northern Rivers Watershed Initiative to mitigate flooding and also improve the health of local rivers. Dr Kesteven said the Initiative was ‘designed to rehabilitate the Richmond catchment, but also the Tweed and Brunswick to some degree, with the aim of both mitigating flood peaks and flood damage, and at the same time rehabilitate the health of the river, all the way from ...the top of the catchment to the very bottom.’ Read more about how Landcare groups use nature-based flood mitigation techniques. ‘That means things like riparian restoration (tree-planting on banks and waterways), wetland restoration, and small-scale engineering works, which could include putting in contour banks, small dams, and removal of hard fixtures which could affect the flow of the water. ‘The main aim of it is to reduce the peaks of floods,’ he said. ‘Tree-planting along rivers and streams is one of the biggest things, because that slows the water, and slowing the water is what decreases the flood peak,’ said Dr Kesteven. 07.01.2022 2/2 Faces of Landcare NSW - Thalie Patridge - Project Manager To me, Landcare is about connecting and supporting local communities to meet their land management goals. I have coordinated volunteers, Aboriginal rangers, scientists, government policy officers and technologists to co-design and deliver projects that consider diverse aspirations and land use needs including cultural, pastoral, fire, mining, threatened species, weeds, and bush resources. I think this sort of diver...sity is very important and one of the real positives of the Landcare movement. The two projects I’m currently managing ‘Partnering in Private Land Conservation’ and ‘Creating Canopies in Greater Sydney’ build on my experience. I’m excited by the potential for them to grow Landcare across NSW. When I was in the desert, in a drought full of dust storms, all the local artists started painting flowers. I think it’s important to show the challenges but look toward the positives. My projects have significant challenges for Landcare but by working together NSW Landcare’s unique space will allow us to deliver positive outcomes for communities, sustainable farming and development, and the environment. #facesoflandcare #landcarensw #landcare #bct #dpie #creatingcanopiesingreatersydney #creatingcanopies #partneringinprivatelandconservation

04.01.2022 1/2 Faces of Landcare NSW - Thalie Patridge - Project Manager (Mascot) My background is a bit eclectic, a bit diverse, which I think matches well with one of the great things about Landcare in NSW. While I’m still looking for a suitable pant suit for the Sydney office, I’m just as comfortable in the city as I am in a swag in the desert. As an Australian with British heritage I grew up on Cam-mer-ray-gal land in Sydney, eating a mix of Aussie and Malaysian food, spending much ...of my time in a tent bushwalking with family, and in various school orchestra venues across Sydney and regional NSW. After more than 10 years in remote Australia, I’m back in Sydney enjoying being near the water, in a kayak, supporting river cleanups. My career has jumped me back and forth between Sydney and some of the most remote places in Australia. I worked on threatened plant and animal management across 100,000km2 of South Australia in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands. I was lucky enough to be mentored by a group of Anangu women elders who are nationally and internationally respected for their cultural knowledge, land management work, art, and leadership in women’s and community development. One of our projects, the Warru (Black-footed Rock Wallaby) Recovery Program was awarded a NAIDOC Caring for Country award in 2011. I have trained Aboriginal rangers in data collection and mapping across Central and Northern Australia and managed app and database development projects for NSW government and Aboriginal Land Councils. I have a passion for mapping and data management and their value for project recognition and on-ground land management outcomes. #facesoflandcare #landcarensw #bct #dpie #creatingcanopiesingreatersydney #creatingcanopies #manyhandsonevoice

02.01.2022 Australia is home to more than 500,000 animal and plant species, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. Over the last 200 years, more than 100 animal and plant species have become extinct. In NSW alone there are close to 1000 animal and plant species at risk of extinction. National Threatened Species Day is when we turn the spotlight on native plants, animals, and ecosystems that are under threat and reflect on how we can protect them into the future.... The day also celebrates the amazing work that is being done to save them by passionate conservationists, researchers, volunteers, and community experts. Landcare NSW is proud to partner with #SavingOurSpecies to raise awareness, capacity, resources, community interest and funding to support projects across NSW, so more can be done to secure the ongoing survival of threatened species. https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au//spotlight-on-threatene
