23.01.2022 All aspiring athletes should read Martin Brills inspiring words below!! Congratulations Martin! And thank you Bill Ronald for sharing: ! . Australian Greg Benko is one, the other is New Zealands Martin Brill. We cannot understate the work required to reach this level. A telling account here from Martin, that can guide aspiring fencers in the holistic approac...h that he took. Now an exceptional Maitre, Martin is a giant in our sport. In a recent FeNZ discussion Martin accounted for his success. Read, learn and emulate young fencers! Martin Brill : I wanted to be better at fencing. So I fenced, I trained, I read books, I practiced, I lost, I made mistakes, I practised at home, I practised footwork while waiting for the bus. I had a coach, Merv Sharfe, who knew how to encourage me and others to train together, as training partners, fencing with each other to get better. I went to as many training sessions as I could, I learned the rules, I learned to referee, I went to competitions, I lost more than I won, I fenced and trained more than the others, I practised and trained harder and more diligently than the others, I spent more time than the others watching fencers, watching coaches, observing, thinking, analysing and preparing. I took the opportunities that presented themselves, I took all the opportunities that I could, to learn and get better. I also created opportunities for myself to train, practise and get better. I devoted more time to my fencing than the others did. I believed in myself, I enjoyed the game, I played the game and kept practising playing the game better than the others. I looked for advantages, played to my strengths, and minimised my weaknesses. I made lots of mistakes. And in the end I was an overnight success internationally, taking me 19 years to get to the Olympic Final. I made lots of mistakes, I taught myself a lot of what I learned. I think how much better I could have been if I had someone with my experience helping. If you have a dream, just do it. If you want help, ask. It is that easy. Dont wait, dont waste a minute. Dreams are worth having. Long live the dream. Do what you have to do, be the best you can be, and do it know.

23.01.2022 The relaxing of COVID19 restrictions in WA and the return of training at Fencing Clubs. On Sunday the WA Government announced that WA will now move level 2 of ...the National Government Framework for a COVID safe Australia. They further set out how they would be relaxing restrictions specifically here in WA. From Monday May 18th, Indoor non contact sport for up to 20 people will be allowed. Indoor sport venues can reopen on this basis but they need to maintain an average density of 4m2. Also there should be no to minimal shared equipment. Venues may also need to provide a COVID safe plan and we are awaiting further Sport specific guidance from the WA Minister for Sport through the Department of Sport. The government guidance will be based upon a framework put together by the Australian Institute of Sport in conjunction with the Department of Health and National Sport Organisations such as the AFF. I have attached the AIS Framework for Fencers to familiarise themselves with. Please make note that at level 2 Athletes should train on a Get In-Train-Get Out basis. This means arriving exactly at the time your training starts ready to train and leaving straight after with no socialising. There will also need to be strict protocols for hygiene precautions and social distancing before during and after training. FencingWA has communicated the AIS Framework for the reboot of Sport in a COVID environment with all clubs. As well as the need for clubs to put a plan together to submit to the AFF of how they will actively promote they AIS framework, this has to be done so that clubs can be sanctioned to operate fencing activities under the AFF Insurance scheme. Clubs are now communicating with their venues and looking to plan to return once all protocols are in place and venues are open to them. We hope to be seeing fencers back training in clubs here in WA soon but please bare with us and your clubs as they prepare to do this while trying to keep you and the wider community safe from this virus.
