02.01.2022 SHIRE TO FUND LOCAL HERBARIUM GROUP TO EXTEND COASTAL WEED ERADICATION PROGRAM The Jurien Bay Regional Herbarium Group have been successful in their submission... for the Shire of Dandaragan Community Environmental Grant Program to expand their Pyp Grass Eradication project to include eradication of spiny rush and Japanese Pepper tree. Pyp grass was introduced in the 1960’s for its sand binding properties but is now one of the worst environmental weeds in Western Australia. Jurien Bay and Cervantes have populations of pyp grass (Ehrhata villosa) that spread as much as 8m in a season, smothering and killing the native vegetation. Pyp grass reduces dune biodiversity and increases the susceptibility of dune erosion due to its shallow roots. After successfully completing the first year of the Pyp Grass Eradication Project - funded by the Shire - and providing a report highlighting the positive results of their one year project, Shire Councillors approved to extend the project to a second year of funding with the addition of two other invasive coastal weeds. Another round of spraying will occur in the coming months and the Jurien Bay Regional Herbarium Group will be looking for volunteers in Cervantes and Jurien Bay to help locate actively growing pyp grass within known sites and locate further infestations, as well as for planting locally grown vegetation. The community group has successfully forged partnerships, not only with the Shire, but with the local Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions Parks and Wildlife office to assist them with a space for growing seedlings for revegetation. A true community effort with the community, local and state government contributing. Congratulations to the @Jurien Bay Regional Herbarium Group for all their hard work and commitment to improving our local coastal environment.
