16.01.2022 The Harley Davidson 4 speed gearbox was introduced in 1936 and was used until early 1979 on the Big Twins. Almost fifty years! This was known as the Ratchet Lid Gearbox. For 1977-early 1979 improvements were made to increase reliability and oil tightness and prepare for the next generation Gearbox known as the Castle Top or Rotary lid. Improvements such as closed roller bearings instead of loose rollers, new design transmission housing and bushes, main drive gear spacer, countershaft, shifter fingers and oil seals were an attempt to improve the product, these changes can be retro fitted to your pre 77 Ratchet Lid. Any questions? Email us at [email protected] and watch out for the next article on the Castle Top 4 speed Gearbox.

02.01.2022 Sputhe 5 Speed Gearbox for 4 Speed Harley Davidson. Allan Sputhe, was a brilliant Motorcyclist and Engineer, who designed and built his own V Twin Engines and many other products to constantly push the limits of performance and Speed. One of his creations began in 1993, Alan saw how superior the HD 5 speed gearbox are, in reliability, smoothness and longevity. He designed and cast, and machined his own Transmission housings and kits to adapt a 5 speed gearbox into a 4 speed (say 1937-84) frame, and still use all the original 4 speed starter, clutch, primary, rear drive and appearance. Kick start kits are available if desired. These days many people want to keep their bikes original, and may not ride much, so this would not be a conversion for everybody. 01.01.2022 In 1979, HD introduced the final incarnation of the 4 speed gearbox, originally introduced in 1936 on the EL 1,000cc Knucklehead, OHV Big Twin. This new Gearbox became known as the Rotary lid, Castle lid or Cow Pie lid. HD was moving with the times and customers wanted more comforts. HD was planning the groundwork for a better gearbox that would provide for a better clutch, front and rear belt drive, front wheel speedo, more efficient shifting and oil tight, improved electri...c start (to do away with the old kick starter), and a bigger capacity 80c.i. engine. The 4 speed was used until 1984, but was still found in the 1985 Evo Softail and 1986 Evo Wide Glide models. By this time the new 5 speed gearbox had proven more reliable and oil tight than the 4 speed design. (It can be debated if you really need 5 or 6 gears, but we will leave that debate for another day.) With so many 4 speed gearboxes, worldwide from 1936 to 1986, it was not surprising that Andrews Products produced aftermarket standard and close ratio gears, shift clutches, main shafts and counter shafts at reasonable prices to a very high standard. All American made. As HD deleted 4 speed gearbox parts from its inventory, they have become harder to find to keep the 4 speeds running. Contact Rolling Thunder Products if you are looking for hard to get 4 speed parts. If we cannot help, we may be able to recommend somebody who can. [email protected] See more
