16.01.2022 New research shows that #oxytocin may be able to treat or even reverse the progression of #Alzheimers disease. Oxytocin is a hormone & a chemical messenger in the brain which controls aspects of the reproductive system & human behaviour, amongst other things. The study suggests that signals which are blocked in the brains of people with #dementia may be able to be unblocked.... When oxytocin was added to the brains of mice with Alzheimer’s, their signalling abilities increased. This suggests that oxytocin can reverse impairment of synaptic plasticity. The exciting potential of neural plasticity - the ability of neurons to change in form & function in response to alterations in their environment - is being explored by Professor Bryce Vissel's team at the #UTS Centre for #Neuroscience & Regenerative Medicine. Our methodology has 3 dimensions: - Deeply understand the mechanisms of neural plasticity in learning, movement & #mentalhealth - Think differently about how plasticity mechanisms go wrong in disorders such as #Parkinsons, Alzheimer's & dementia - Break from mainstream paradigms as required to work towards #innovation such as novel therapeutic drugs & regenerative #technology For more information on the CNRM's ground-breaking #science & #research, visit https://bit.ly/2RbxnSc. #FutureMedicine UTS Science UTS: University of Technology Sydney

14.01.2022 Australian researchers have developed an experimental drug which may help prevent COVID-19-related deaths. The drug has shown promise in preventing heart attack, stroke & the ability to temporarily prevent platelet-triggered blood clotting in animal models. Scientists were hopeful the drug could also be used to treat #coronavirus patients who developed similar blood clotting, which according to them occurs in around 75% of those critically ill with the virus & is a major cau...se of death associated with COVID. As science works to solve the #COVID19 pandemic, the community is being reminded to wash hands with soap & water; continue social distancing & #StayAtHome where possible. This will flatten the curve & #SaveLives. The #UTS Centre for #Neuroscience & Regenerative Medicine conducts groundbreaking research into the brain & spinal cord. 10.01.2022 Professor Bryce Vissel was pleased to visit Kiama to thank the Kiama Lions Club & local residents for their support of his team's ground-breaking #SpinalCordInjury research. The Kiama Lions Club united to raise funds in honour of Chris English, a member of their club. Mr English suffered a fall in 2018, sustaining a traumatic spinal cord injury, & now lives with quadriplegia. He & his wife, Bobbie, chose the Centre for Neuroscience & Regenerative Medicine, UTS as a beneficia...ry of the Kiama Lions Club's support. Professor Vissel said he was very moved by their faith him & his team at the CNRM. He plans on returning to Kiama soon to also talk about the world-leading work #UTS is doing in #dementia & #Alzheimers. Prof Vissel was interviewed on the Centre's spinal cord injury program by The Bugle - for more, click the below. #FutureMedicine #medicalresearch #sci UTS Science UTS: University of Technology Sydney

09.01.2022 Could #guthealth hold the answers to #Alzheimers? A new study shows that proteins (specifically beta-amyloid) associated with Alzheimer's disease may originate in the gut. #Research uncovered the protein migrating from the gut to the brains of mice subjects, who exhibited short/long-term memory problems similar to those seen in people with Alzheimer’s. While it’s still unclear what role beta-amyloid plays in causing Alzheimer’s, the study indicates it may be possible to prev...ent or delay the condition by removing beta-amyloid from the gut before it spreads to the brain. #UTS' Professor Bryce Vissel, who was recently interviewed on the topic by New Scientist, agrees this may be worth pursuing. In the Alzheimer’s field, there has been a tendency to dismiss alternative ideas, he says. But we still don’t have any effective treatments, so I think it’s important to keep these other ideas alive and to properly interrogate them." 08.01.2022 New research has identified 12 risk factors for #dementia which may be modified by individuals, potentially giving them the power to delay or prevent developing the disease. The study suggests that up to 40% of dementia cases could be suspended or halted if the following risk factors are addressed: - Obesity... - #Depression / #mentalhealth - Physical inactivity - Diabetes - Low social contact - Smoking - Hearing impairment - Less education - Hypertension - Excessive alcohol consumption - Traumatic brain injury - Air pollution Although some risk factors may be unavoidable or accidental (such as traumatic brain injury), Professor Bryce Vissel from the #UTS Centre for #Neuroscience & Regenerative Medicine says taking a holistic approach to dementia & #Alzheimers could allow us to see a dramatic decrease in cases. We need to take an unbiased approach to the neuroscience. Our research at the CNRM is driving plasticity and regeneration; seeking a deeper understanding of risk factors like genetics, nutrition, lifestyle & even infection; & considering the whole-of-person in our cutting-edge science. We believe this will give us the answers we need to solve this devastating disease & reduce human suffering for millions around the world. However, much more #research is urgently needed to progress our understanding & save lives. 08.01.2022 Could not getting enough #sleep be linked to #Alzheimers disease? A new study shows that people who experience more fragmented sleep & less non-REM slow-wave sleep are more likely to have increased levels of amyloid-beta in their brains. These plaques have been linked to Alzheimer’s & #dementia, although their exact role in disease progression remains uncertain.... There is emerging scientific evidence to suggest that sleep quality may be one of the modifiable risk factors of Alzheimer’s & dementia, along with: - Obesity - #Depression / #mentalhealth - Physical inactivity - Diabetes - Low social contact - Smoking - Hearing impairment - Less education - Hypertension - Excessive alcohol consumption - Traumatic brain injury - Air pollution Professor Bryce Vissel says these risk factors may be modified by individuals, potentially giving them the power to delay or prevent developing the disease - although some risk factors may be unavoidable / accidental (like traumatic brain injury). Taking a holistic approach to dementia & Alzheimer’s could allow us to see a dramatic decrease in cases by as much as 40%. 05.01.2022 Australian researchers have completed the first round of human dosing in a promising #covid19 #vaccine trial. As scientists accelerate toward a treatment for the #coronavirus, the public is being reminded to socially distance, download the #COVIDSafe app & wash hands with soap & water. This will slow the spread of the virus & help protect our most vulnerable community members - those over 60yo & the immuno-compromised.... 03.01.2022 Australian scientists may be "three or four months" away from a #COVID19 vaccine, after researchers cleared the first phase of human trials. The drug being tested for the #coronavirus #vaccine was found to be safe & generated an immune response in participants after being injected into 40 volunteers. As science accelerates towards a treatment & a vaccine, the public is being reminded to #StayAtHome where possible; wash hands with soap & water often & #socialdistance. ... This will save the lives of those most vulnerable to the virus: the immuno-compromised & older Australians. 02.01.2022 Frank, 72, loves line-dancing, using it to help manage #Parkinsons symptoms. When a related disease also attacked his nervous system, it damaged his #SpinalCord & left him in a wheelchair. Frank thought his dancing days were over. After working with our friends at Royal Rehab, Frank was able to regain his ability to dance, & is happily back on the dance-floor. A #SpinalCordInjury robs people of their independence, which can also significantly impact their #MentalHealth. Inju...ry or disease can strike & change everything in the blink of an eye. This #ruokday2020, it’s important to remember that there are many dedicated scientists & healthcare professionals who are doing all they can to help, treat & discover cures for SCI, Parkinson’s & the many mental health challenges facing our society. Together we will get there.
